I'm not sure how its necessarily a win. Certainly making Manning the highest paid QB in the NFL would bring him here, but I don't believe anyone thinks it would be a smart move to do so.

 

Or, our interest in Manning may be a smokescreen to drive the price down for Flynn..

The truth is nobody knows what our intentions are.. If Philbin thinks Flynn can be a franchise QB and was hired in part to help lure Flynn, then this may be a moot argument.. I hope that Ross keeps his mouth shut and the primary force driving rumors will be the media with no internal leaks from Dolphin sources..

 

I guess it all depends upon how fast things move.

Honestly, I think Miami will be the only team that would be willing to jump right in and sign him with the hope that he fully recovers. I think any other team interested in him is going to wait. My guess is, this is going to be driven by Stephen Ross and his desire to get the name brand quarterback.

Now, if Peyton Manning rebuffs signing early, it may indicate that he's not that interested in Miami after all. In that case, I think Miami has to move on to Matt Flynn. They cannot let Manning drag this out and cost them Flynn in the process.

If the so called sources are correct though, it appears that Manning's camp and the Dolphins have had contact over the past three weeks, whether it is truly tampering or not. This makes me think that there is a mutual desire on both parts and this could get done quickly.

Bringing in a Peyton Manning, who is not 100% healthy and making him the highest paid QB in the NFL would obviously not make sense. Yet bringing in a healthy Manning, who could play at a high level for the next three to four years would be the smartest move the Dolphins could make, if they are not going to be willing to trade up and get RG3 in the draft.

There is no QB in the draft, after Luck and RG3 who are ever going to be quality starters in the NFL, IMO. I don't think the Dolphins appear to be that high on Flynn and Moore certainly is not a QB you can build a team around. So if Manning is healthy and Luck and RG3 are not an option. I think that signing Manning would be the smartest move the Dolphins could make.

This will give the Dolphins a top tier QB for the next few years and hopefully the Dolphins can find their future QB in the 2013 or 2014 drafts. If they sign Manning and with Moore as the backup next season, the Dolphins would be able to use all their draft picks on filling their needs at other positions on the team, since they would have no need to draft a QB in the 2012 draft.

 

I think I read somewhere that Jeff Ireland has final decision on all personnel matters written into his contract. I wonder if Ross would be willing to fire Ireland a couple of weeks before the draft if he doesn't want Manning in the first place?

 

Personal opinion it seems.

 

I believe Manning will be signed by another team before the free agency signing period even begins. So I really don't see how Manning already being signed to another team is going to drive the price down for Flynn. If anything, with Manning already signed by a team, this will most likely drive the price for Flynn even higher.

 

We won't be able to compete cash wise not to mention we are the Dolphins. Remember?

 

Since I can't stand Ireland as the teams GM, I can only hope that Ireland would fight Ross on this and that Ross would end up firing Ireland. That would make my day and year, for that matter.

 

Well, on one hand, three strikes and your out...but that aside...

The question is what is the best fit for Manning. On one hand, you've got the wco thing, but on the other hand, you got a clean slate, offensively here that Philbin and Manning can build together an offense that fits both guys. That could be draw for Manning to come here, despite the WCO thing. Philbin has a history of being the kind of coach that fits his schemes around his personnel. That's another good thing. Peyton is one of the most cerebral QBs to ever play the game, from and X's and O's point so learning something new isn't the issue. We have some good things going for us, with a decent D but there are some holes that have to be filled. How much we spend on Manning will certainly affect their ability to restock the team's needs.

How far away is he now and is his prognosis for a 'full' recovery immanent. Is he going to be back to where he once was or not. The indications are starting to look like he is doing very well. We'll have to see. But when is that time frame.

Can he participate or be expected to participate in OTA's and minicamps once he's signed, or will there be a period of time before that can be possible. Beings that we don't have an offense (or defense) in place right now, that would be a prominent issue if he won't be ready until say, May, July or whenever. Ross/Ireland/Philbin have to think about that as well.

One other thought, does anyone know if he can be claimed on waivers by a team ?? Would Ross gamble that big (to the tune of $35M this season alone) ??

 

I worry that Ireland will become the problem in our attempt to sign Manning. I'm hoping Ross tells Ireland to stand down and that We do make some consessions to land him. I'm thinking more and more that if we end up with Manning that we are going to suddenly compete with anyone. We can get him and keep our high draft picks, so I expect to get better in some key areas in a hurry.

I'm also wondering if we keep our pick at 8 overall and WR Blackmon is sitting there if we don't grab him up. With Manning we'll use more 4 and 5 WR sets. Blackmon would be a beast in that system. I like Garcon as well.

Some of you forget who we are talking about sometimes I think. He is a GREAT player. His mind is his greatest asset, and when I hear people say he might only play a few years I don't get it. I could easy see him playing at an ELITE level for 2-3 more years, and then more along the lines of what we had with Pennington for 2-3 more years after that. He will either be healthy or he wont. If he is then I could see him playing well alot longer than 2-3 seasons with his skill set. He is also an incredible leader. We need both.

It might end up helping us too that we have a new staff and Manning might like the idea of having input into our new system of offense. It could also be a negative as he may see them as unproven and back off. We'll see. I do expect Ross to go after him like a man of fire.

 

Yeah, I think it's very possible that they went into this with the idea that they might be able to sign him to a contract laden with incentives. Now that it appears he's throwing better, teams are starting to want to kick the tires a bit and explore their options. There's already reports Seattle and Washington are ready to go full throttle, which if true may make it less likely that he can be had for an overly incentive laden contract.

I think it then becomes an internal question- With Philbin on board, and Matt Flynn becoming available, how far would Ireland go before he attempts to convince Ross that it's cost prohibitive and that Flynn in an offense he's comfortable with is a very viable option?

 

I feel the same, I'm not really comfortable having our " dynamic duo " trying to convince Manning to come to the Dolphins, hope I'm wrong.

 

And that completely ignores the history of this medical issue in other players and his age. The fact his, his age is a negative predictor for the longevity of his career after this injury, and on average, players with this injury only play 29 games over a 2.8 year period. Once again, there is this idea that because this is Peyton Manning, he is going to defy medical odds and play much longer than anyone else with this injury has.

 

again. your "stat" lacks context. tell me the average for Hall Of Fame quarterbacks. QB is a low impact position.

 

To me, Ireland has been the main problem with this team all along. So him screwing up the Dolphins attempt to sign Manning would not surprise me in the least. In fact I am much more surprised when he actually does something right than when he messes up. Signing Manning is probably the only thing which may save his job going forward, so he should just keep him mouth shut and let Ross spend his money the way he wants to, in an attempt to improve the Dolphins.

 

There is also the misgiven notion that even if Manning can play and loses a little on his overall ability that makes him not worth bringing to Miami. However that notion completely ignores the fact that he can lose a little and still be much better than 90% of the QB's in the NFL.

He is a a certain HOF player, and would be our top player if he is anywhere close to where he has played in the past. Nobody on the possible list of options has the potential to improve us more than Manning.

 

And nobody has any actual facts or logical reasons why Ireland would be against getting Peyton, right? Good.

If I was Ross I'd have Jake Long and Brandon Marshall selling this to Manning asap. From a talent on offense stand-point, I have to think our situation looks better for Peyton than SEA, ARI, etc.

 

I think health would be a primary reason why anyone would be opposed to signing Manning, Ireland included.

 

Right, but that's an unknown variable at this point.

All we have is doctors telling Mort that he's not struggling and will be back.

An incentive-based deal alleviates a lot of that concern as well.

 

All gonna come down to if Ross is willing to listen to Ireland and philbin or not, if not he will do everything to sign Peyton, think of Ireland as the middleman with possibilities being listened to about Flynn manning or draft and I'm sure philbin would prefer not to have to wait to implement his offense until Peyton is gone...

Exactly. Either we see Manning as someone who is healthy and can play or we don't, its that simple. If we decide on signing him then I'm confident he'll play and play well at that. Suddenly we become a serious competitor. No other QB move does that for us IMO unless somehow we could get Luck.

One thing that helps Manning if he is healthy is how quick his reads are and how aware he is in the games. He doesn't need to take unecessary hits and he gets the ball out so quickly that protection becomes easier with a guy like him running the O

 

Sure. But that is a major "if".

 

If Peyton choses another team over us, people will blame Ireland. If Peyton comes here and performs bad, people will blame Ireland. If Peyton comes here and performs well, people will say it was in spite of Ireland. :sad:

Here are the pros and cons as I see them.

Pros:
1. 4 time league MVP
2. 2nd, 3rd, or 4th on the all times stat list and even with injury in 06 gas yet to show signs of decaying production.
3. Motivation - Peyton Manning was just cut for a rookie QB!! That has to be a thorn in his side. Just think how this sits with his wife BTW who loves South Beach!
4. Between the ears one of the, if not the, best offensive minds in the game at this point in time!

Cons:
1. We have no idea that Peyton wants to be here.
and last but by no means least:
2. Just how far can he come back from his surgery and the time frame it will take to do so if ever.

Not being a fly on the wall in the office as the meetings go on about this I venture to say no one here has any real clue which way this will turn out. Never the less its a far better subject matter than the lock out of 2011.

I am going to guess one context also lacking is age. I assume most of the players were in there 20s or at least closer to 30 than 40. Age 36 is pretty close to the age when even HOF QBs start to physically decline. For Peyton to have roughly 29 games left in him does not seem unreasonable at all. Isn't Favre the only QB to ever start for a playoff team over 40 years of age (may have been one other)?

 

Why would you assume anything? I am talking about context.

You cannot lump in Linemen, Defensive Backs, etc.. along with Quarterbacks and then make a blanket statement about longevity.
