Had we stayed at 12 we could have had our choice of Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas, Jason Pierre Paul, Earl Thomas, Brandon Graham, Mike Iupati, Kareem Jackson, Jermaine Gresham, or Devin McCourty. Even after the trade down Misi over Gronk will always sting, and John Jerry over Jimmy Graham in the 3rd I'll probably NEVER get over...but we also could have had Navorro Bowman, Eric Decker, Dennis Pitta, or Mike Williams. we took AJ Edds in the 4th, the very next pick? only the best defensive tackle in football, Geno Atkins...oof. Kam Chancellor was also there.
Honestly passing on all these elite players probably wouldn't be so bad if we had actually drafted some impact players ourselves, instead we took a bunch of average to below average guys. a time machine would be great right now, this draft will always go down as the "What Could Have Been" Draft. if it wasn't for Reshad Jones in the 5th round that draft would have a D- grade.

Yep, that is the tale of our mediocrity, we passed on impact guys to take "..3 yr starters who played in a major conference.." types.
Looking back, the one gem from that draft, Reshad Jones, was only there b/c he surprised everyone by declaring early for the draft and was thought to be to young (iirc he was 20 when drafted) to be taken with a high pick.
This is one of the reasons why the last 2 drafts have built more confidence in me about Ireland, in 2010 no way we move up to take an elite type talent ala Dion Jordan. -
Dude. I appreciate the consistency of your message, but you need to learn the art of timing.

The only pick that really stings for me is Misi. Gronkowski had so much value there and we needed a TE. Given his blocking ability, he was Such a perfect fit. Without that back injury, kid would of played big and became a first rounder.
Another guy I wanted of a similar mold (talented but derailed by injury) Tank Carradine. Tank in round 2 at pick 40 was such great value. If we didn't trade up with for Jordan, I would have loved to have traded up in round 2 for him. -
For the last 2 drafts we've finally broken type and went with athletes, not "system fits" (Saban) not high concept guys (Mueller) and not "3 yr starters" (Parcells) but guys who can run well and play football.
Put it this way, 8th pick in the draft, we took THill, he of the 19 starts, no way that would've happened under previous regimes.Phyl, Rick 1966, NolesNPhinsFan and 1 other person like this. -

The problem is their futures may have changed being in Miami because of scheme, talent, locker room factors, etc. Gronk would be better in NE than MIA, but he still would be good. Why? he has Brady throwing the ball, and other weapons to look out for, versus nobody that SCARES you tbh.

Also, of the list mentioned, I would point out that as talented as Dez Bryant is, he has a permanent baby sitter after a strip club incidents and trying to kill his mother... I love his talent, but I would be scared to death of what comes next. Even if he is the 2nd best in the game, right now. -
Following the draft Parcells called Sean Payton to say, “You got a heck of a football player, we were going to draft him.”
Thanks Bill! :up:The Rev and Fin-Omenal like this. -
Safe to say Bill and THAT philosophy set our team back 3-4 years...rather Jeff agreed then or not he certainly isn't following that aged blueprint anymore.

As for the 2010 Draft, you're supposed to be able to accurately judge a draft after 3 years but we're still not able to because there's a sense that one shoe hasn't yet dropped on Jared Odrick.
Reshad Jones is a clear victory. You're supposed to get about two of those per draft and then that is a successful draft. If Jared Odrick just isn't really doing it at DT and he goes off elsewhere as a free agent, or even if he stays but he's somewhere between a mediocre starter to a backup, then you'd have to say 2010 is an unsuccessful draft. -
I do wonder though of the people in this thread that clearly tend to place some blame from that draft on Bill Parcells, how many of them have been out there crediting Jeff Ireland with finding Reshad Jones?

Hindsight is 20/20 as they say. That is all.

Hindsight's a b-tch.
There are 163 players in that draft that were drafted that I did not include on my draft board, yet I don't regret a single one of those omissions. Some of them have maybe played a little here and there, like I said nothing I look at and say damn I wish I'd recognized that guy.
But there are definitely about 20 players that have played really well that I didn't include amongst the ~70 players that were drafted off my favorites board...and I do regret them. They include Trent Williams, Russell Okung, Joe Haden, Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, Maurkice Pouncey, T.J. Ward, LaMarr Houston, Carlos Dunlap, Sean Lee, Golden Tate, Jared Veldheer, Eric Decker, Tony Moeaki, Everson Griffin, Alterraun Verner, Aaron Hernandez, Reshad Jones, Marshall Newhouse, Antonio Brown and Stevie Brown.
The guys who never really did anything that were drafted off my favorites board include Brandon Ghee, Kevin Thomas, C.J. Wilson, Larry Asante, Doug Worthington, Jerry Hughes, Thaddeus Gibson, Dekoda Watson, A.J. Edds, Dexter Davis, Austin Spitler, Charles Brown, Kyle Callaway, Mike Kafka, Levi Brown, Anthony Dixon, Dorin Dickerson, Arrelious Benn, Dexter McCluster and Taylor Price.
That's a big bowl of regret, right there.
Luckily that leaves about 51 out of 71 players that I'm glad I had on the favorites board, one way or another. I'll take that.Steve-Mo likes this. -
Jerry Hughes was certainly a draft darling around here, can't say he didnt LOOK the part. Some things are just unexplainable.

The biggest regrets for me with that draft in terms of guys I put on the board that went pretty high and they just ended up sucking...none bigger than Jerry Hughes I think, but also Charles Brown, Arrelious Benn and Dexter McCluster. Learning experiences. The others were kind of low round guys although the Patriots drafted Taylor Price too high which is kind of their norm nowadays.

Passing on Gronk for Misi was just bad. Gronk was first round talent the question mark was his back.
-
My simuldraft that year (according to the spreadsheet I dug up) had us taking Brandon Graham, Jimmy Graham, Kam Chancellor, Cam Thomas, Dekoda Watson, C.J. Wilson and John Estes.
That's a lot of "ams". Graham, Graham, Kam and Cam. Damn. LOL.The Rev likes this. -
I remember that year, all senior bowl guys, captains at good schools etc. Good stuff, really panned out lol

What the hell ever happened to Dekoda Watson, by the way? I really thought that guy was going to be pretty good.
