Leading into this season we scoured the record of Bill Parcells turnaround projects. I liked to hang my hat on the turnaround 2003 Cowboys and thought it would a miracle if this team accomplished a similar season. Well, they completed that season in much the same way. The 2003 Cowboys lost to Carolina on Wildcard weekend. They looked completely overmatched versus that Carolina team. I remember that game well as I watched it from the nosebleed section of the stadium.
The Cowboys made the playoffs in Parcells first year with a roster that had only half the roster turnover that was the case in Miami this year. The following year Quincy Carter has his offseason "smokin' the doob" moment. The 2004 Cowboys 6-10 season served more of a roster cleansing of all of Jerry Jones bad decisions more than any other.
Why all of this Cowboys history? How does it relate to this team other than the similar first year record? Well, I'm looking at the roster. I think this 2008 Dolphins roster reflects almost 50% worth of roster turnover. I would not be surprised to see a similar turnover in our second Parcells season. Take a look at the roster cleansing from 2003 through 2005 and just imagine. It is about to happen in Miami all over again.

I'm thinking the team has an idea of who they want to keep around and may have signed their extensions already.
This means Carey, Crowder, Bell, etc. might be gone. -
If they let Bell go I will say it and repeat it they are idiots. Crowder keeps this defense glued together (I mean look at how bad they were in KC), and Carey would be nice to keep as well. The smart thing to do keep what we have and build on it letting go only the marginal talent, etc. I was critical of BP when arriving, now I support him and I hope he keeps me in that zone.
I would be sick if Bell was let go. Of course I know all we are doing is speculating here. :lol:cnc66, DOLFANMIKE and funkdat like this. -

We have the money to sign them all back so they will only let the guys they don't like walk, imho -
Also all of them have said they want to be back so , i could see most of them taking "bad deals" to come back.

Here is the thing Padre..... By the time Parcells four year stint with the Cowboys was over, fully 3/4 of the Cowboys starting defense was DRAFTED by Parcells. -
-
2003
Leading Rusher Troy Hambrick
2004
Gone
2003
Recevier Joey Galloway
2004
Gone
2003
Quarterback Quincy Carter
2004
Gone
There are always guys in the league or in the draft that they like better....... -
Keep Bell out of those 3, we need a free safety that can tackle, and a NT that can close up the pocket a little.

Also Troy and Quincy never were very good players to begin with and Galloway was way over payed "" 6.31 million for playing in 15 games for 34 catches for 672 yards and two TDs.Is that worth 6 million to you..............???
Carey/Crowder/Bell/Goodman are all going to be starting in the NFL next year and have been starting in the NFL for over 3 years and yet your trying to compare them to guys like Quincy Carter and Troy Hambrick and you say my thinking is faulty??? -

You may be right about the changes that I'm sure we'll have but to link those changes to what happened in Dallas, I think, would be a mistake. Bill doesn't have to deal with a JJ type here; he can/will do as he pleases and if anything I think the changes will happen quicker, not slower. I do not look for a regression next year as happened in Dallas.:wink2: We may not win many more games but I bet we are a much better team.
-
I don't think Hill is that bad. I'd also like to re-sign both Bell and Crowder... Crowder is better than people give him credit for, I'd like to see us draft a good ILB in the first or second round to be our leader of the two MLBs. I'm fine with Crowder playing second fiddler to another ILB. -
I think that Bell and Crowder will be back. They will probably look at the price of Carey and see if they can get equal or better value in free agency or the draft.
-
Before we start calling for heads, should we not wait for the sting of the loss to go away a bit. There were not to many bright spots from that game, but calm heads should see that as long as you can resign your own and then go out and find someone better is the way to go. I think OL and LB should be priority for us.
So, resign who you can as long as the price is right, then build through the draft and FA. -
If you guys don't resign Bell or Crowder I know there is a team in New York that will be very interested in them as we are looking for another LB and S.
Out of those three (Carey, Crowder, Bell), I think Crowder is the most valuable and should be the #1 target to resign.cnc66 likes this. -
The point is that there are some players that fans think are untouchable. Take our own Ronnie Brown for instance. You have fans that swear their allegiance to him, yet what has he done that was so spectacular through three different regimes? He is due almost 4 million this coming year and then he is a free agent. What would you wager on him not being traded if the right suitor came along? Some fans still cry about the Chris Chambers trade but I would venture to say that Parcells would not have abided by that Spielman contract for very long neither. Dude was overpaid and some fans had a very difficult time facing up to that fact.
Then there is the "untouchable" Chad Pennington. You do not have to go back very far in this websites threads to find "Sign him long term now!" He's playing under a two year contract. Do you think Cowboy's fans had any idea Carter was going to be cut that offseason? Do you think Cowboy's fans had any idea some guy named Tony Romo would eventually be starting in favor of Drew Bledsoe?
Padre threw Akin Aydoele under the bus. I said it was Renaldo Hill's zone. The fact is that the receiver crossed the field and entered the void between zones. The play took a long time to develope. I would venture to say that the quarterback sat in the pocket untouched nearing 5 seconds. So you have two fans mentioning two names in the secondary and the players mentioned had very little culpability at all. The play had a negative result for the Dolphins because we had no pass rush. This one play leads you back to four (maybe five) players.
Would you consider Vonnie Holliday untouchable?
Would you consider Joey Porter untouchable?
Would you consider Matt Roth untouchable?
They are just three of the players that let that rookie stand in the pocket for what seemed like forever yesterday. Yet the only problems with this team that you identify is our free agents.
So let me take your statement again. You know the one. The statement that I quoted earlier and you found so offensive that I would quote and say it's faulty. Do not worry. I will not place words in your mouth as you have done with me.

Bill did have that disgusted look as he watched the Ravens outman and dismantle us.We had about as good a run as we can expect with the talent we have .
We need another couple of years of good drafting and smart free agent signings to improve that talent and I expect we will keep churning the roster to find the right mix of players .Also there may be some coaching changespadre31, cnc66 and Fin Fan In Cali like this. -
Would you take Wilford instead? -

Goodman, Allen, and Renaldo Hill are all poor tacklers. -
I'm not sure about Crowder but IMO the play that best depicts Crowders season was the 3rd and 2 in which the Ravens swung a pass to the fullback to the right side. Crowder was there but instead of going after the fullback in an agressive manner he laid back. He let him get the 1st down plus another 5 or so yards before he made the tackle.
Im not saying he could have prevented the 1st down but he certianly didnt play that play very well. -
No way do we let Y. Bell go. He was one of our top 3-4 players this year and one of our best Defensive player hands down.
Who had better seasons than these 4 guys?
Penny
Long
Porter
Bell
Cornerstone player and he isn't going to cost much to resign. Safeties are relatively cheap to sign. Anyhow, I hope your hunch is wrong. -
Carey may just be too expensive to keep...but I hope we try -
This is your wayback machine Thread not mine, don't try to pin it on me.
BTW~ I just chopped down your other thread you started today , please keep them coming :2guns: lol to funny -
I can believe that will happen, but I also think there is only so much that can be turned over and still remain competitive.
We could look at the defense, and our 11 starters, and legitimately replace ILB,S, add another DE, add another Cb..
Oline could see 1 new starter and more depth added as a hedge for Thomas and Smiley, a new 3rd string Qb, a new Fb, another Te..
But how much are we willing to flip in the face of a much tougher schedule next season? -
From what I remember about the Dallas team, Parcells gave the 43 staff an opportunity in 2003. I think he even placated for the 2004 season although I cannot recall to be certain. In 2005 it was 34 personel at full speed. I find the gains in personel for the 2005 season to be astounding.
The thing here is that no hinderances such as Jerry Jones here exist here. They did not have to give the 43 the old "college try" because so much money was already invested in the players to fit the defense. This cap was already cleared and what was not cleared (i.e. Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas) Parcells cleared himself just prior to the season.
As I have stated in the past, I do not like to speculate on talent. I'm just certain that a little stinch lingers from our past.........especially on the defense. Think about it. We averaged at least one cut per week at the beginning of the season. I fully believe that Parcells/Ireland are not satisfied with this roster. -
IIRC, the Cowboys actually slipped a bit in Tuna's second year from 9-7 to 6-10 or so, then they switched to the 3-4.
I think our Depth will really be addressed this offseason, the 23-44 roster spots will be churned a bit. -
I think Carey is the priority. OL with significant experience at both spots is valuable. He's not a world beater, but still pretty good. The problem will be the money that is thrown at him by other teams.
Bell is solid, and he'll return only if his price is reasonable. I do not think the FO values him quite the way the fans do. Considering his age and injury history.
Crowder will have to come cheap as well, IMO. He was solid, but not spectacular, and I believe he is at his ceiling.
