I think if you just look at the roster, you can easily tell Ireland hasn't addressed those positions with early picks. However, with the pressure Ireland is currently under from fans and the glaringly obvious lack of talented receivers, if he doesn't select a WR or TE with one of his first three picks... man, that will be jaw-droppingly, head-shakingly shocking.

Ireland wants playmakers badly. The only thing that will stop us from taking a handful is if the value isn't there at the pick.

 

Very seldom should there be a place where an offensive skill position player wouldn't be a reasonable value. Perhaps Ireland has his board totally vertical and insists on taking the highest ranked remaining player regardless of position, but seldom will one player stand out as being ranked significantly higher than any other. Miller last year was one. IMO, there was value at WR in the 2nd when Martin was taken, and also at both 3rd rounders. Ireland inexplicitly ignored WR. If he had Egnew as a significantly higher ranked player than Sanu, Hilton and/or Givens, then there is something wrong with his eyes IMO. Vernon made more sense considering the need for pass rusher, but he wasn't a steal in the 3rd, more like reasonable value. If Ireland ignores WR again through the first 5 picks under the pretense of no WR of value at any pick, he should be fired the next day.
The first 5 picks should include either 2 WRs or one each TE and WR, IMO.

 

Marve, I said the "only thing that would prevent us from taking a handful [of playmakers]", with "handful" being the operative word, as opposed to just a couple if that's all the value allows for. I didn't say anything about not taking any playmakers at all.

 

How many is a handful? He better take at least two receivers for Tannehill in the first 5 picks, or I just may go down to Davie and stomp his guts out.

 

The rumor I heard right after the draft was that Egnew was a pick Philbin pushed for. That makes sense in terms of the position, but both then and now, I didn't care for the player.

 

Holy Crap I hope that is NOT true! It was plain to see on film how horrible.. horrible Egnew was at blocking. Allergic.

I have trusted Philbin's judgement so far, but this would be a head-scratcher. I mean he was the TIGHT ENDS coach at Iowa for gosh sake. He is also the one who realized Eric Steinbach, a TE, would make a good Guard. If he can't evaluate a tight end's total inability to block anyone then wtf!?

Or maybe this falls into the category of overconfidence in his ability to coach and develop a TE.

 

Not sure I believe that rumor to be true. Depends on the source. If you heard it from someone employed in Miami's personnel dept, then I'd be more apt to believe it.

 

Also, his name is Markus Wheaton, not Marcus.

 

Why? When the rumor came out was the day the pick was made. There was only optimism about the pick then. People said it made sense b/c Philbin probably prioritized a seam TE for his system rather than the all-around TE that Ireland has favored in the past. When people were still optimistic about the pick, the rumor wasn't questioned. Now that the pick looks poor then the rumor has to be false.

 

I never heard the rumor on draft day. Why wouldn't anyone want to know the source of said rumor? All it takes for an unfounded rumor to grow legs these days is some blogger on the internet to post that they heard it, when it fact it could just be just their own speculation fueled by unchecked optimism over the pick in general.

 

I pretty much read every possible bit of news right after the draft and I didn't hear that rumor either. There was a little speculation that Philbin might have wanted an athletic pass receiving TE like Egnew but that was about it.

 

rumors are just that rumors… I have found t hat in life…. 90% of the rumors you hear are BS (scientific study)… In other words, I doubt we will ever know who in the Dolphins management wanted Egnew.

 

The rumor was reported during either the NFL Network telecast or the ESPN radio telecast (I listened to both that day). It was reportedly according to one of the people in the Dolphin warroom. But what would they know?

 

So, the people inside Miami's war room, Ireland, Gaine, the scouts, the entire coaching staff, et al, had one person supplying inside info to members of the media while the draft was in progress? This is the premise by which we are giving credence to this rumor?

 

Have you ever watched a draft? It is fairly common to have trusted journalists in a warroom. Every year a couple of teams do it along with some even allowing cameras. I've heard similar reports regarding other teams as well. The reports are always limited to stuff that has happened and there are probably other limitations as well, but to claim that it doesn't happen is just ignorant.
