Textbook definition of placing way too much emphasis on 40 times. Bill Barnwell is doing his best Al Davis impersonation.

That said, I don’t like the prospect of Ingram at 15, so I agree with Barnwell for a totally different set of reasons.

 

Smith and Ingram had the same 40 times at their pro days.

The key to explosive plays is not so much raw speed, though it helps, it is making a tackler miss then heading upfield.

 

If he's going uphill while defenders are coming downhill, then I could really care less what his 40 time is. His 1st 20 yards are only 0.02 seconds slower than Adrian Peterson's....... and that supersedes long speed any day in my book. It doesn't matter how fast a guy can run if he doesn't have the vision, instincts, or ability to get through the first 10 yards.

Ingram is a solid choice! They can always get a change of pace back but Ingram is what most teams would want at Rb. Good power, burst is there, catches well, and his vision is what sets him apart from most.

A lot of people just want a Rb who can take it to the house every time but that's not reality. Give me a Rb who makes a defense respect the run, then get me a burnner Wr to go along with Marshall, Bess, and Hartline. That makes for a dangerous offense.


Then we have to think Oline because without a better line than last year, Ingram, Chirs Johnson and Adrian Peterson all would have a hard time running.

 

Yes sir, Ingram's 10 yard speed will get him to the second level of a defense faster than most running backs today, and that's where he can be dangerous. With a good line, I see a lot of 10-15 yard runs....

 

Which carries your offense for you.

People really underrate how important consistent 8-12 yard runs are.

 

Also will help down at the goal line.

Ingram makes sense for us so much so it is hard to do a mock draft where you do not take him at #15.

What, take Gabe Carimi and move him to Guard?

Take a OLB when Misi was just drafted and played well?

A Qb would make sense there, but Ross's expectations are in "win now, win at home" mode leaving little room to take a Qb at #15.

Ronnie Brown without the flash imo....I know Ronnie hasn't been the back he was in the past, but I don't think for one minute Ingram is better. Brown has better hands, faster burst speed, faster overall speed and in my opinion harder to bring down in the open field. Ingram is a solid back but I don't think we need a banger style RB, that is supposed to be Hilliard's job and he needs his chance. We need a RB that will stretch a defense and has fast break away speed,. Ingram isn't going to magically fix our running game. If our O-line blocks like they did last year nothing will change in our running game.

I honestly think we should trade down and pick up a 2nd if possible, or if Mallett is there at 15 I say pick him and address our need for a RB in free agency

 

Look when they were drafted though. This should be be another factor that points the FO in selecting a RB later in the draft. If we grab a tackle or guard at 15 then go HB later on I will be a very happy man.

Not impressed with 4.62 forty at 5'9", 215 lbs., then knocking it down to around 4.55 at his pro day(I also read that he came in 10 lbs. lighter for the combine). I think he's the product of some weird hype machine; trade down for best OL or Hankerson...

Which I mostly agree with, the problem being, if they believed that way about Ronnie Brown, they never would have let him hit Free Agency, "Yeah we love ya Ronnie, we are going to build our running game around you, but go ahead and test the market"

That makes -0- sense, clearly they are looking at someone else.

 

Honestly I don't even think he would be good value at 15 if he had a phenomenal 40 time. C.J. Spiller anyone? Might not be a fair comparison, but RBs just don't have the same value in today's NFL.

 

Let us not forget that Ronnie ran a 4.39... Ronnie is faster than Ricky or Ingram, has better hands and blocks better. I would prefer to resign Ronnie and maybe pick up DeAngelo Williams as the burner.

Oh and I was all for Ingram until I saw his speed, even with the 4.55 Mayock clocked him at the Pro Day.

 

Even with Ronnie B's speed he rarely broke long runs.

Ronnie b brings up the real question with Mark Ingram, how durable is he? Ronnie Brown has missed how many games as a Dolphin?

21 in 5 yrs? Twice, maybe 3 times his season ended before December.

 

Spiller could not even block on 3rd downs let alone run between the tackles, those two have nothing in common.

Spiller is more akin to Reggie Bush, Ingram is more of a 3 down, starting running back.

Ryan Williams' burst is as good, but both bring up the larger point that the NFL really no longer considers running backs as game breakers, they are more rotational players for most teams, and the ones who are drafted highly, Spiller and the Chargers Ryan Matthews did very little their first seasons.

To me, that creates opportunities as there is value to be had, running the ball can be 50% of an offense, why not have a running back who can produce?

Agreed. Ingram also had the fastest first 10 yards at the combine, and he is a VG receiver and blocker.

Now, if our OL wipes out every defender where his vision, instincts, and ability don't matter, and if he is able to get into a sprinter's stance, and if the NFL lets him run in shorts and a t-shirt, it is possible we may have the wrong guy after he runs 20 yards or so, and overpowers DB's who are 25-30 pounds lighter.

Should all this happen, I would have to say the article made a very good point. :)

The almost poetic downhill style running, which forces defenders to try to arm tackle, without him losing even half a step. The guy would provide the instant offensive balance the team needs.

The Ingram speed issue is horribly overrated and shouldn't be scaring anyone. If you say that we should pass on Ingram because of a poor 40 time, then you have no idea what constitutes an NFL running back.

He is nothing like Ronnie either, and wouldn't spend half his time dancing around in the backfield. He hits the hole fast and gets to the second level fast which Ronnie struggles with. Ingram also has excellent hands (people seem to overlook this) and blocks well.

I don't if we should pick him at 15, simply due to positional value, but to dismiss him because of top end speed would be a stupid move.

The only thing that should matter is whether or not the #15 pick improves our team at a position of need. I wouldn't skip him just b/c I hope I can get production out of a later round RB. I'd take Ingram (if Julio's not there) and just do my best to draft well the rest of the way so that I continue to pick up impact players.

We know there are a few high upside TE prospects in the 3rd-5th round, so I wouldn't want to miss on them. We know there are a few speed/playmaking WRs in the 3rd round, so I wouldn't want to miss on them b/c I passed on a good RB. If we pass on Ingram, we could be in an unfavorable position of overdrafting a RB to fill a need and costing ourselves a better player b/c of it.
