2008 NFL Draft Prospect - Scouting Report
As one of the top prep basketball prospects in the country coming out of high school in 2005, Bennett declared for the NBA draft and could have been a first-round pick.
But, just like he changed his mind that year and instead went to Texas A&M, it could benefit him this year to resist the temptation of entering the NFL draft a year early.
Bennett has serious raw talent as a receiver and blocker. With his basketball background, he naturally has great hands, but he has had to learn how to use them well. Being in an offense where the passing game isn't the focus means he hasn't had as many opportunities as he would if he played for, say, Missouri. But he is a good receiver and will certainly get even better with time. This season, he has 45 catches for 541 yards and four touchdowns, making him the Aggies' leading receiver.
He has proven himself to be an excellent blocker, which he needs to be in A&M's run-oriented offense, but it's his pass blocking that may be most noteworthy.
All in all, he's a terrific all-around athlete - aside from his great hands, he's very strong and he has excellent leaping ability.
With his focus completely on football now, he's got the chance to really concentrate on getting the most out of his talent and potential. He could very well bulk up and become a pass-catching extension of the O-line, or he could slim down some and get a little faster, to be even more of a threat as a receiver. Speed is the one area where he could improve a little, but he is quick for someone his size.
If he does put his name into the 2008 draft, someone could take a chance on him in the first round, because he has incredible potential. However, it could be very advantageous for him to stay in school for his senior season. A&M's new coach, Mike Sherman, is a very accomplished offensive line coach and the extra year would allow him not only to fully become the weapon in the passing game that he could be (like Green Bay used their tight ends in his time with the Packers), but Sherman's tutelage will help him become the best blocker he could be.
We should pursue him in the draft, maybe with the #32, great blocker and pass catcher. I've seen him rated #2 behind F. Davis on most draft sites and a late 1st early second grade. Sounds alot like an antonio gates.

I like him, but I wouldn't draft him at #32. Hopefully he falls or pushes another one of the good tight ends down in the 2nd round.

It would be nice to have a top TE for once. We haven't had one for so many years it's almost laughable.

How great would it be to see a great TE as well as gamebreaking wide receivers and a top o-line.
