Mmm ... I grew up watching Marty Ball when he was coaching the KC Chiefs. It never failed. The Chiefs would need 5 yards, and good old Marty would call a 3 yard curl route. Need 3 yards? Run a 1 yard screen play.

Martyball is superior to anything this franchise

has seen since the dawning of the Marino era. Don't kid yourselves. To listen to Marty's league-wide detractors, they guy simply cannot coach, he's a complete imbecile. So someone needs to explain how Marty Schottenheimer teams had double-digit wins in 11 of his 21 seasons coaching. He's posted at least 12 wins with three different franchises. He's been 13-3 twice, and 14-2 once. He took over a KC Chiefs team that had posted back to back 4 win seasons and two years later they're 11-5. He took a Redskins team that began 0-5 and got that team to 8-8, then was inexplicably fired. Bet Daniel Snyder wishes he had Marty now. And for all the talk about coaching trees, and geniuses in this league, Schottenheimer's disciples have been as successful as any--Cowher, Dungy, etc.

There is something to be said for continuity within a system, but Cam Cameron is clearly out of his depth, so what good is continuity within a system when the coach is clearly not able to run the system well enough to insure his longevity? Besides, most of the players currently on the roster will not be returning, we're talking a complete rebuild here, so continuity matters little. New players will be learning a new system irregardless.

 

Yah maybe new schemes, new players, starting from scratch that works instead of the same schemes, players that led us to a probable 0-16.

In 10 yrs coaching the Chiefs he won 101 games and lost 58, so Marty Ball must have been doing something right.

IMO, if the Chargers had fired him sooner, Wayne would have hired Marty last offseason. Don Shula is one guy Wayne will listen to, and Don and Marty are good friends, so the idea of him becoming the head coach next year isn't far fetched IMO.

The Wannstadt regime was pretty stable. It also led us to where we are today.

 

Normally Id say no....but he does have a past with Shotty and maybe if he is actually feeling overwhelmed he might warm up to the Idea.

I agree with NJ, we need stability and if people keep thinking these old coaches who probably have little or no desire to turn a franchise around want to come to Miami.. they have another thing coming.

Cameron should stay for another 1-2 years before we even consider firing him. I'll judge him next year before I get on the "Fire Cameron" bandwagon.

2. i've never been a fan of schottenheimer as a coach, but one thing is undeniable - he's a class act. never in a million years would he step in to replace a protege of his in this kind of a situation.

 

It all sounds good but you ignore the fact that the man was given a gun with no bullets. You are saying that he can't shoot straight because he can't hit the target. HE'S GOT NO BULLETS!!!

The rebuild started this year. More of the younger players will be here than you think. More of the older players will be gone than you think.

The change in philosophy started three years ago. In short, we went from a shut down defense with a run the ball offense to a turnover seeking defense and a passing offense. The change has not fully been realized. We are in today's football though. We are not playing grandpa's football (Herd reference) anymore. It does not win championships.

Cam Cameron and Randy Mueller may be fired after another year of this but I will be forever be grateful for their attempt to blow up this roster and save us from the salary cap hell that we were in perennially.

 

If Cam is fired, I would be in favor of hiring Marty S.

After 12 games of Cammy Ball, I'm beginning to wonder who was putting the brakes on the Chargers offense last season, Cam or Marty.

0-16 would be a modern NFL low point, changes would be mandatory.

That said. Nabo Cane makes a great point, Marty is too classy to step over the coaching body of his OC in San Diego to take a job here, we would have to look elsewhere.

And for a historical perspective, Chuck Knox was successful where ever he coached in the NFL, until his final run back with the LA Rams, they were awful, point being, past performance is not necessarily prolog to future performance in the case of a HC, that Miami Fans know all to well.

 

Let's be fair, guys. Cam is playing a team composed of rejects and practice squad players. Marty? Resurrect Lombardi and we still go 0-16. Give the guy a break.

Very good summary on Schottenheimer. I've never seen anyone who so consistently outperformed his team's statistical blueprint. It's absolutely remarkable. The stats would say his team was 8-8 caliber and Marty would go 11-5 or even 12-4.

Then he would pay a price in the postseason, because the 12-4 team would play to its true 8-8 level, and fans would scream that Marty failed again.

No way last year's Chargers should have been 14-2. The numbers read more like 11-5. But the ultimate example was '95. I've never seen a top seed as mediocre as that Chiefs team. Every reliable statistical formula identified the Colts as superior, even though KC was a 10.5 point favorite. The Colts won a close low scoring game and Marty's critics screamed again.

I wouldn't hesitate to hire him if we were making a change. Let's face it, playoff games are so random. Fans thrill to overreact to a sample of maybe 10 or 15 lifetime games, tops. It's a joke. Give yourself a chance in the arena and let the chips fall.

 

Smart, smart observation

This is a fascinating point about Schottenheimer's career arc. He's the ultimate overachiever. You're absolutely correct about the Chargers last year. They really were an 11-5 team. They had no impact wide receiver. When your leading receiving is the tight end, even one as brilliant as Antonio Gates, there is a serious deficiency offensively, and that has rarely been mentioned about the Chargers. Look closely, and that Charger offense, while prolific, was unbalanced. It was mostly about L.T. and Gates, there really were no other quality components on offense, and such a team is easier to defeat come playoff time. The Colts and Steelers failed time and time again in the playoffs until they could create balance, in the case of the Colts, it became a more power-focused running attack, as opposed to the finesse one they used to have, and for the Steelers it was a legitimate passing threat. Schottenheimer never had a legit downfield passing game in San Diego, it shouldn't surprise anyone that he lost to the Patriots, just barely in any case.

Schottenheimer had 14 more victories last season then we're likely to have this season, I'll take that with a first-round playoff loss over what I've seen for the last 20-years any day.

 

When youre 0-12, youre already at scratch. Now is the time to make the change. If you wait another year or two theres even more roster to overturn.

 

wouldnt that be a reason you bring a guy who has won 200 games in to your organization? to teach them how to play winning football again? To coach up the young guys who are going to be the core of your team?

Sorry NJ, I dont mean to make it seem like im harping on only your points. Im just seeing this a lot different and I dont think its a secret i never wanted Cam from day 1. :ffic:
