The 5 teams in the QB hunt...Indy, Washington, Cleveland, Seattle and Miami.

Indy will definitely take Luck. Cleveland/Washington will both be in hunt to get RG3. Flynn will be signed before the draft so any team serious about RG3 will not be going after Flynn. Snyder/Washington most likely to go after Manning imo. Don't think Seattle would be willing to give big contract to Flynn given many think he is unproven outside of GB system.

I think it comes down to two...Miami and the Dolphins.

Flynn and Philbin just makes too much ****ing sense!

The other variable is which team does Flynn want to play for? As long as Miami and Seattle are in the same ballpark financially I assume Flynn would choose South Beach over Seattle and think his best chance for success is to follow Philbin.

 

lol. I agree mostly. I think it comes down to Seattle and Miami. Assuming Flynn likes playing for Philbin, I think we have the edge as well as the management that is willing to pay the money and take the risk to get Flynn here.

 

To me, the most important thing is whether Philbin wants him to run his offense, or not, if he does then we should land him, no excuses, if not, then no big deal, to many times in our past we let our Qb slip instead of pulling the trigger and making it happen.

This is so true. On the surface, Flynn seems like the perfect fit now, but we have no idea how Flynn feels about Philbin, or vice versa. Looking forward to finding out (if we don't get Peyton that is).

From what we've learned about Philbin, I'd be shocked if Flynn doesn't at least have some level of respect for him, if not downright love, but who knows.

Here's the interesting thing for teams that want to sign Flynn who aren't the Dolphins. I think if the Dolphins make a major play, then it's downright obvious that Philbin likes him a lot, and is sold on his ability. But what if we don't make a big play, or any play for that matter. Wouldn't that send up red flags on him for other teams. Wouldn't they ask themselves, "Why WOULDN'T Miami want him?" I'm sure some team would still throw big $$$ his way, but if I was a GM, that would speak volumes if the Dolphins weren't front and center trying to sign him.

 

Not saying Seattle wouldn't be a good fit. I think coach Carroll would tailor the team around Flynn's strength and I think Flynn is the real deal.

I have not heard Flynn address it specifically, but I think it is a fair assumption that the ties and connection Flynn would have with Philbin would far outweigh the connection with Schneider...but I could be wrong.

Living up in Seattle you have a much better read...I recall hearing the Seahawks are pleased with Travaris' progress and wouldn't be willing to break the bank to upgrade the position on Flynn (probably on ESPN). No?

I think whether or not the Dolphins go after Flynn is 100% up to Philbin. While Ireland may have final say on the rest of the player personnel decisions, I think Ross will listen to Philbin when it comes to making a decision on Flynn. It was Philbin who coached Flynn for the last four years and he knows if he is the QB that he wants to risk his job on. If Philbin doesn't think Flynn is ready to be a starting QB in the NFL, I seriously doubt that he will recommend him to Ross and Ireland because of the large contact Flynn will be getting in free agency.

Philbin will also be tying his own future in Miami to how well Flynn plays once he gets here. Unless Philbin is absolutely sure Flynn is the answer for the Dolphins at the QB position, it would not surprise me in the least to see the Dolphins pass on Flynn in free agency.

That's likely the path this takes, though it's not etched in stone. The Top 51 rule doesn't apply until late summer IIRC. So they COULD franchise or transition him and try to trade him, but risk being stuck with him. Plus they might want to use a tag on Jermichael Finley, and you can't use both tags in one season.

IMO it seems pretty clear that the obvious fits are Seattle and Miami. I think it will come down to which one of those teams wants him more and makes him feel most wanted. The news that he will not be franchised tagged has been by far the more likely outcome since the beginning. There were a few here trying to claim he would be tagged, but I saw that logic as flawed at best.

 

If we go after Flynn, then I have to believe that Philbin truly believes hes the guy. but i wouldnt be surprised to see us not go after him at all.

think about Kevin Kolb and AJ Feeley. Two teams went way to hard after those guys (sadly we were one of them) and Reid didn't try to stop either of them from leaving. Kolb is already a bust in AZ, and we all know how Feeley went down. Thankfully we have someone who coached Flynn already, so we know if hes the real deal or not.

If Philbin WANTS Flynn, then Ross should make every effort to get him. If not, then that should send a clear message to EVERY Dolfan that Philbin doesn't think as highly of Flynn as all of "you" seem to.

 

I don't see Ross being outbid, he wants a franchise Qb and if Philibin is willing to stake his coaching career on Flynn then a huge payday is coming to Flynn. I don't see Seattle outbidding Ross, I do think Ross is willing to throw a huge contract on the table for an answer to the Qb position here. And its not my money so I don't have an issue with it. If Flynn could answer our Qb problem we could fix the Oline and fill some holes in the draft/FA and be a serious contender within one off season. If we go into camp with Moore and a late round pick I don't think we contend for a title, MAYBE the playoffs but we'd probably have to hope some teams lose down the stretch to even get to the playoffs.

 

I really think the Phins are in a win/win situation.

As stated by others, if Philbin wants Flynn then it's because he really believes Flynn is a franchise QB. Giving Flynn a major contract means he gets at least 2-3 years even if he's struggling. Philbin would be fired within 4 seasons if we are still struggling. So basically he knows that bringing in a high priced Flynn is not just him believing Flynn is an upgrade but rather him believing so highly in Flynn that he risks his entire job on him. If that's the case, then the Phins should pay Flynn ANY amount of money because your coach is betting his career that Flynn is a top level franchise QB. Philbin having that confidence in Flynn is a win for us because we sign a guy that will probably be a franchise QB.

If Philbin doesn't believe in Flynn, we still win. The desperately needy QB teams are Indy, Cleveland, Wash, Miami, Seattle. Indy drafts Luck, Cleveland drafts RG3, Washington will probably take Tannehill. If Seattle signs Flynn, then that leaves one more potential franchise QB - Weeden. And if the above teams take those players, I don't see anyone else that would take Weeden prior to our 2nd round pick (amazingly, there's simply no teams that have a need at the position that have not recently spent a high pick or given a big recent contract at QB).

With Manning out of the equation until possibly late summer, Seattle signing Flynn really looks like it would force Miami to go for Weeden because there won't be anyone else available. Personally, my wish would be to take Kendall Wright in the 1st and Weeden in the 2nd. Then go sign a FA guard and spend the rest of your picks/money/resources this year and next on getting a pass rusher, safety, MLB. I think the winner of Moore/Weeden would look very good throwing to Marshall, Wright, Bess, Clay, Fasano, Bush

I don't get why if he's not tagged he's not good enough. Drew Brees was allowed to walk and Rivers wasn't even a sure thing. GB has Rodgers

 

I didn't use that question in the proper context, your right, there is no way they can tag Flynn and afford to pay him if no'one offers up compensation, however, they may foresee that if Tagged, he's not good enough for teams to give up the compensation that comes with it, therefore not tagging him, and letting him walk.

 

Not sure but aren't there some rules about tagging and trading now? Not sure but I thought things changed with the new CBA?

 

He's either going to be AJ Feely part deux or Matt Shaub part deux. I'm not going to get too excited if we do sign Flynn. I just don't see a franchise QB in him. If Manning is healthy and ready to go I think we should sign him and draft a rookie QB to learn under him for a year or two. The stress of trying to move up and get RG3 will be eliminated, and we can focus on winning with Manning for the next two years. We also won't have to gamble on Brandon Weeden who I also don't think is going to be anything more than a backup. We can take a look at some of the later round guys like a Kirk Cousins, draft one and let them learn. Who better to learn from than Peyton Manning? Obviously Painter and Jim Sorgi have sucked so being a backup to a great player doesn't always mean it will equal success. I'm all for getting Manning here..

 

No, GB has a franchise QB already (Flynn would make more if they end up stuck with him) and another player in Finley who they would be more likely to tag (lower tag and player they may keep). The hints coming out of GB since the beginning has been that they don't have the cap space for a QB franchise tag or at least that they don't have the cap space based on what they plan to do. Really, it's just a bad risk for them. Nobody is going to trade 2 #1s. They might get a second (at best) and if they just lose him and he does well then they'll probably get a 3rd in a compensatory pick anyways. They might even be able to score that same second in a sign and trade if it's a team they have a relationship with. So really, there's no good reason for GB to tag Flynn and there never has been.

 

In that context, no, he's not good enough to warrant two #1s. IMO he's too limited to be seen as a sure-fire franchise guy. I see him as a borderline franchise potential guy in the right system. I think you can win with him. He seems to have good short and medium range accuracy, very good decision-making and good mobility/pocket awareness. Assuming he has leadership, that's probably enough to give you a reasonable shot with a good team around him. You also have the limited experience holding his potential asking price down. I believe that you can get a pretty good read on a QB even with limited reps if you get to see some key situations and many evaluators I respect would agree, but I would say that most evaluators still cling to the need to see 1000 attempts (or whatever their magic number is).

 

Yeah, I agree here Pads, but IF Philbin says to Irish, this is the guy I want, there is even less of an excuse given his connection with Philbin that we should get him.. Now, it's likely that should we not get him, we'll never really know why, it'll all be conjecture. Naturally Philbin and Irish are not going to admit they couldn't get the kid to sign. It will mean one of three things...the kid didn't want to come here with Philbin or Philbin/Irish didn't think he had what it takes or the money/contract was better somewhere else... I don't see money as an issue with any of the franchises involved, if they really want the kid... Seattle has invested heavily in QBs since Carroll came on there, but they have deep pockets. Wash and Miami are documented 'deep pocket' types and I don't know about Cleveland. They've traditionally been tighter, money wise, but Weidemeyer and Heckert can get the job done...

Either way, it's going to be an interesting offseason. Even if we acquire Flynn, will he be the answer ?? Don't really know, do we ?? Is Manning going to be healthy ?? Can we conjure up enough to trade up to get RG3 ?? Is Tannehill possible ?? Is MMoore, who's the forgotten child here the real answer for us ??

I disagree with that statement. They have invested, however not heavily.

 

He's probably referring to ridiculously over-paying for Whitehurst. I just don't know whether that makes them more or less likely to pay big for Flynn. My guess is that its probably irrelevant other than maybe to suggest that they're clearly willing to over-pay for a guy they believe in.

 

They did overpay, however the payment was trading down in the 2nd round and a good back up quarterback contract.

It isn't like they pulled a Kevin Kolb on the guy.

 

The compensation that comes with it is negotiable, even if they have to practically give him away.

What probably stops GB from tagging him is that they don't have much cap room, have a few guys they want to sign first and can't risk having to wait on some team having to work out a contract agreement.

 

I've learned that people are going to believe what they want to believe.

 

The fine detail of the contract if offered is the key. It may be 10 million per but if it's got an easy get out after a couple of years then it's a fine deal, as you can groom a draftee in the meantime if Flynn doesn't become the long term solution. That is based upon not giving up picks of course, which if needed would end the Flynn speculation for me.

Also if Manning becomes a FA and if we aren't the destination, it will likely soften up the Flynn market a bit more, which with the other QBs mentioned in this thread that didn't work out may be a bit weaker then the media is reporting, especially for teams not running a WCO type.

For us (putting Manning aside for now) I think they need to decide Flynn vs Moore (or Moore+Orton) as the starter for next year and draft a guy for the future (assuming Luck and RG3 are out that future, if you really want one of them you just stick with Moore).
