Oakland offensive lineman Jake Grove is in town for a free agency visit that will officially begin Tuesday. Grove, 29, is a free agent because he met playing time incentives in his contract and the final year of his deal was voided. The Raiders have been trying to re-sign him, obviously with no luck so far.
"We want him back, obviously," Raiders coach Tom Cable said Feb. 19 when asked if he was comfortable with the player's status. "So if he's not there or until it's resolved I'm not comfortable at all."
Cable's discomfort could grow substantially in the next 24 hours.
If the Dolphins are able to sign the 6-4 and 300 pound Grove, consider him your starting center for the 2009 season.

but weren't close to a deal with bennett as well?:wink2: -
If he's healthy and reasonable he'll probably be under contract before he leaves the area.

Here is a partial pre draft scouting report
Position C. Height 6-4. Weight 300. Birthdate 01/22/1980.

He's not Jason Brown, but he's pretty good. He is better than Samson Satele and would definitely prevent us from having to take Alex Mack. It would pretty much set our draft board to not have to take a C.
He can handle some of the NTs in the league, not perfectly but he's strong and he'd probably be asked to gain another ten pounds or so here.
A major plus if he signs. If we can sign say a Leigh Bodden or another solid level CB to replace Goodman and then Kevin Burnett we're free to do whatever we like in the draft. -
So will he be a starter, or for depth.

Would much prefer it was a center we acquire rather than a CB. I fully expect a CB at 44 at this point.

I was a huge fan of Grove when he came out of college. The mean streak runs deep with this guy and I remember him saying something to teh effect of " I love punishing the guy in front of me."

i thought he would be really good coming out of college, and i watched a lot of the raiders up till this past season(so maybe someone that watched him last year could chime in), but ive been unimpressed with him up to this point.
personally id see this more as depth at Center and Guard. hes versatile and can play both -
nice! Id like to see us sign him. Sounds like its just around the corner. Be nice to keep him and move Satele over to Guard. What an O-line we would have then.
However, if they decide to trade Satele, what do you guys suppose we can get for him to stock up some draft picks? Im not saying this is what i want to happen, just curious as to his value at this point. -
Wasn't Grove the No#1 center coming out the year he was drafted? Evidently they see something in him or the trifecta wouldn't be bringing him in.
-
Hope we get this guy. I liked him a lot coming out of college and has been pretty good for Oakland. Would automatically be our starting center. In the draft, we could focus on CB/WR/NT/LB.

Should have went after Geoff Hangartner when we had the chance freaking Bills.

Good deal. Hopefully it wasn't for too much money.
-
sweet. loved him coming out of Tech. i think this means that Satele stays though, the article stated Grove has only played 16 games once.
-
Wow, 5 year deal.

What Raider fans think of grove.

Don't believe Raider fans, they're ridiculous for the most part. Go pay the cash to watch Oakland's games against Jason Ferguson, Vince Wilfork, and Kris Jenkins or ask your friend who has the service.
-
I'm the raiders GM in the GM game. I tallied up some things about him, of course, and he lost a total of 39 yards last year by result of penalty or sacks given up last year. On the raiders line he is among one of the players to give up the least amount of yards, is one of the younger members of the line at 29 and was among the cheapest paid.
Take that for what it's worth. -
Yet they banter about how many yards and countless penalties he had. Do Raider fans watch their own games? Some guy at the ye old site we used to frequently visit wrote a series of plays for Jake Grove against the Jenkins and Wilfork and he did very very well. I just don't get it. I've heard good things about him and yet there's just his random notion of him as a guy who has no strength which if you go by his combine it's certainly not true and after our intensive weight training program he should be up to 310lbs or so.

let them have their opinions they saw him play the last years, i´m wondering why this regime would go after grove, even offering a 5 year deal, i though we won´t go for injury prone players and grove has played a full season only once in his career actually he played 46 out of 80

I live in northern calif and have seen many Raider games, and I must say, Grove really hasn't stood out. I guess that could be good or bad depending how you look at it.
what service would you be referring to? -
He won't stand out. You hope he doesn't stand out.
19.99 service from NFL.com to watch all the games from this past year. I forget what it was called. It's really useful. If I have time before the next couple of weeks destroy me I might look into it and see just how well or how poorly Grove did.calphin likes this. -
Game rewind. Had never heard of it until a few weeks back. A guy over at the other place has a breakdown of Grove against N.E. and N.Y. where he used this. I'm guessing this is what ya'll are talking about.

I know I liked him a lot coming out of Va Tech, was bummed when the Raiders drafted him.
The Raiders were 10th in the league in rushing last season. Grove played in 12 of those games. A team can't run the ball well if the center isn't holding up his part of the deal. -
Here is a Youtube clip of him with Trev Albert. Grove said he didn't grow up indoors with air conditioning like a lot of guys so he is used to the heat. Sounds perfect for a guy coming to Miami. I'd love to bring in a guy like Duke Robinson at LG, and sandwich him in between the Two Jakes. Ronnie Brown should have a hole on the left side that they can run a truck through.

I love the signing...I am a HUGE HOKIE FAN!!!
