Having Farve at # 4 is insane. He is not having anywhere near an MVP season.
Manning is carrying the Colts right now, he should be talked about
Turner, Portis, Ryan and Pennington are all having better seasons than Farve, heck even Chris Johnson and Kerry Collins.

Pennington deserves to be in the conversation, but i dont think he should win it...

 

Cutler started off on fire but has come back down to earth. Warner will probably garner alot of votes and deservedly so. If the Dolphins do win the division on the last day of the season how can you not vote for Pennington?

 

Cutler has been back on fire the last 3/4 weeks. His game in the Meadowlands a couple of weeks ago was one of the great games of quarterbacking I've seen this DECADE.

 

Favre over Pennington is questionable. Favre over Ryan is a joke. The rationale given is testament for Clayton being way out of his depth.

 

Matt Ryan's performance is quite comparable to Pennington's.

 

Some people will disagree with this but the fact that Ryan did a job very similar to Pennington while being a rookie makes his accomplishment even more impessive. Based on stats and performance alone it's a cointoss indeed. So I'm giving Ryan the edge because he's quite simply playing the best rookie QB season since Dan Marino.

 

You are correct. I just had qb statistics open and Ryan was right there.. pretty darned remarkable for a rookie.

 

I agree. Both players are leading stunning turnarounds for teams that sucked big time in 2007. Ryan gets bonus points for being a rookie, not that it really should matter, but it kinda does.

Also, I don't know how many of you have watched Ryan play a full game. I have. He was incredible.

 

I've seen a couple of Falcons' games and I honestly haven't seen a better QB this season than Ryan in last week's loss against New Orleans. Yeah, he 'only' threw one touchdown and he also had a pick but that was as remarkable a game by a QB than you'll ever see when you're not a gamecenter/stat analyst. I don't think I've seen a more impressive performance all season. Stunning.

 

Ok, keep in mind that Greenberg is Chad Pennington's do-boy...I mean he has a 'bordering on nauseating' man-crush on him...

But they both make a good point...the thing is, I hope the players and coaches aren't drinking the kool-aid like many fans are yet...we still have to beat SF and KC to make that game mean anything...we aren't good enough to overlook anyone...if you don't believe me, look at the St. Louis, Oakland, Seahawks and first jills game to get a reality check...

 

Penny for MVP? I doubt it. Penny for Comeback Player of the Year? Can definately see it.

 

I know I'm looking at this through orange and aqua colored glasses, but who else could even be considered over Pennington (for comeback POY)? I don't think Warner counts because he had a solid season last year. The only other name that comes to mind also wears aqua and orange.

 

Some of those throws were simply amazing after watching the re-aired game on NFLN. The throw to Eddie Royal down near the right sideline was simply incredible, especially considering it was in cold weather.

Favre is a difficult one. I think he should be in there because they have won games this year and are in first place in the division. He has made some throws - that one against Oakland I think it was where he threw it to Coles' back shoulder - to win games. However, I would put Matt Ryan over him. I think Clinton Portis was on top of that list when the Redskins were winning but he's had some injuries the last few weeks and they've struggled. Campbell was up there as well but he came back down to earth.

Clayton also noted that Tedy Bruschi is done for the year.

 

Warner plays in the easiest division in football and also in a dome.....he also has the best pair of receivers in the NFL in Boldin and Fitz, not to mention Breaston. Brees is also putting up big numbers but they are not a playoff team. If you ask who is the most "valuable" player to a team as far as what he brings to the team I think Pennington has to be in the MVP conversation.....we were 1-16 last year and now we are 8-5 with a good shot at the playoffs. Chad has also thrown for more yards than the GREAT Favre.

 

Joey Porter has been mentioned for comeback POY.

 

His credibility went out the window with having farve in the top 4, especially with so many other better canditates.

Clayton's list:

Kurt Warner 1 - How can Warner be the most valuable player when he has the best WRs in the NFL on his team? Put any of the other QB MVP candidates into the Cardinals offense, and they would have the same, if not better results.
Drew Breese 2 - Brees is a legit choice for MVP. He has gotten it done this year at record pace. And he has done it despite horrible seasons from Shockey, Colston, and after losing Bush for 6 weeks.
Adrian Peterson 3 - Yeah, he's the leading rusher, and he is a force to be reckoned with. But he is not an MVP. He's not doing even 1/3 of what Marshall Faulk did for the Rams. He's not doing what LT did for the Bolts. And he's not doing what Alexander did for the Seahawks.
Brett Favre 4 - What? Brett Favre? How does Brett get the credit for a team that has won primarily off their defense and running game? Dumb choice IMO.

My list.

1 - Troy Polamalu - This guy is the reason the Steelers haven't fallen off the face of the earth. He takes away the middle of the field. Having Troy forces teams to do things they don't want to do. He gives the pass rush more time get sacks. He has the ability to patrol sideline to sideline. He will be at the ball, you can count on that. Without him, the Steelers would be a .500 team, if not worse.

2 - Eli Manning - If his name were Eli Roethlisberger, he would be the MVP leader. He will always be compared to the stats his brother put up in Indy. But in reality, he is quickly becoming one of the best game managing QBs around. And he can make every throw to boot. His TD-INT ratio is 20:8 so far this season, and only 2% of his passes are intercepted. Basically, he is Chad Pennington with an arm.

3 - Drew Brees - He is going to break Marino's single season yardage record. Too bad the Saints won't make the playoffs, or he might be a legit #1 MVP candidate.

4 - Ed Reed - See Troy Polamalu

5 - Chad Pennington - This may be a homer pick, but without him the Dolphins don't win more than 5 or 6 games. Not only do the Dolphins have fewer turnover than any other team in the NFL this season; but they have fewer than any team of ALLTIME. This is because of one person, Chad Pennington.

Like it or love it, thats my list, and I'm sticking to it.

 

Pennington definitely deserves consideration. Where on earth would the Dolphins be without Pennington? He took a team from last year's abyss to playoff contender. These awards will largely depend on how far they take their teams into the playoffs. This team has several wholes and questionable talent but yet Pennington has done remarkably well. The team is also young and inexperienced and suffers injury setbacks as well. He schools his linemen and receivers in meetings and one on one practices. Hardest working QB in the league probably. Has never lost a game for us and has won games on his arm. Takes care of the ball on offense and fires up his defense. He loves it the Miami and the team and fans feed off him. Sparano has a lot to be thankful for because for Pennington. Sparano should also be coach of the year.

 

Chad Pennington deserves consideration for MVP. You take Chad Pennington off this team and we win 4-5 games.

Kurt Warner is a good candidate, it's no secret that Arizona is the Division Champion this year because of his play.

Sorry for the off topic post, but my favorite recent Kelly "Gem" was his key match-up and concern for the Bills game of Joey Thomas vs Lee Evans.

I suppose he was right, as its awfully difficult for a player on the bench in street clothes to cover the other teams best wideout. :no:

 

Not to discount the amazing improvement Porter has made this season, but I guess when I think comeback POY I typically think of a player who missed significant time the previous year due to injury / sickness or other issues. Otherwise it becomes more of a most improved POY, IMO. Glancing over the list of winners, seems like most of these guys were either injured / retired / or some other life event the season before. I could be wrong though.

 

Porter does not deserve comeback player of the yr for the simple reason that he was out of position last yr and its common knowledge.

 

All I know is, if this team somehow wins its final three games, the issue of being ignored, overlooked, or recognized for all but the most obscure accomplishment, will no longer be a issue.
But until it comes to pass, I'm perfectly content with obscurity.

 

But its not about who is having the best year, its about who is more important to their team, and I can't even begin to imagine the horrid season we would be having if McCown was our "veteran" starter this season. To me Penny is "da man" as each of those other teams would still have winning records with a different of backup QB, and Miami dare say might have 2 or 3 wins.

 

I think many people aren't realizing where the Colts would be without Peyton Manning. He should be on top of that list no questions asked. There's simply no player more valuable to his teams' success than Peyton.
