Miami Dolphins’ gamble with Charles Clay didn’t have to happen

That phrase has been heard a lot around town this past week, and for good reason. The Dolphins have made a string of good moves, including, naturally, the signing of Ndamukong Suh and the trade for Kenny Stills, leaving many to ask what isn’t to like about how they’re retooling the roster.
Today, maybe we have our answer.
The Dolphins put a transition tag on tight end Charles Clay, making him the only player in the league to receive that honor.
After we signed TE Jordan Cameron, I knew that we were letting Charles Clay walk.
We just kept the transition tag on him, to force the Bills to pay a higher price.
The bills are who I feel sorry for! Big money for an average at best player!

Headcoach material wouldn’t want to work somewhere they’re not trusted with actual football decisions.
Conuficusluxury_boxYou have to wonder how well Clay will be able to play moving forward. If there's anything chronic in that knee it's a matter of time before he falls off a cliff - production wise.

Except Gronkowski isn't getting a signing bonus this year or next, so of course he'll be making less. Plus he signed his contract what, 3 years ago? He was dealing with injuries at the time (still is really) and took a lesser deal to get guaranteed money.

How so?
Cameron is a better receiver than Clay will ever be. He's bigger, stronger, faster, and a much better red zone threat.

Cameron has a tougher knee? JC isn't without his issues, but I like his skill set significantly more.

OK, the money the Bills pay him is by far to much for us to keep Clay - but nontheless I will miss him. In certain situations he was able to make a fantastic play out of nothing i.e. converting a fourth down with a catch and run after a bad play call in clutch time or the move on Polamalu and so on. I agree with letting him walk but I will miss him.
Fin Dforum_veteranWe are assuming the Dolphins undervalued Clay's market (even though many on here thought the original offer the Dolphins made was "a little high, but worth it".)
Think about this though, what if signing Cameron wasn't a reaction to Clay, but the plan all along? We did not hesitate to sign Cameron. Almost as if that was the plan. What if Tannebaum, having been on the player side of things and having intimate knowledge of Rex's player preferences, knew he'd be hot after Clay. Maybe he knew the Bills would spend bigger in a bidding war if he was just a FA. So he he put the T tag on Clay with max they'd be willing to spend, knowing the Bills would have to spend too big to get him. Meanwhile, if the Bills balked we had the space available and oh no we have two good TEs and if not, we still have Cameron.
