The Dolphins needed Tony Sparano’s tough-love approach in 2008 when they were turning around a 1-15 team, but the relationship between the players and their coaches got a little contentious in 2011, particularly after the team started the season 0-7. There was no better example of the “us vs. them” mentality than the speech Sparano gave his team after it dropped to 0-6.
As linebacker Kevin Burnett recalled last year: “He said, ‘You know what? If you guys want to lose and be 0-16 and get me out of here, no problem. But guess what? I’m not going to be the only one gone, and that’s just the reality of this business.’”
