Saw this this morning on my phone when I woke up. I agree with where Armando is trying to go with this, but I don't think it's altogether accurate either. We don't have to have a team full of playmakers, we just need to have a couple. We were downright intimidating last season with Porter pulling that 17.5 sack season. A little intimidation in one major spot goes a long way.

We do, however, have a playmaker in the Ronnie and Ricky Tandem. We get someone on the defense that legitimately scares offenses and it'll go a long way I feel

Part of having playmakers is actually putting them in a position to make plays. We have playmakers on the team currently, but we run smashmouth football that is meant to grind it out. It's not designed for big plays. Ricky and Ronnie are both big play threats, so is Ginn. Yet we don't give them the opportunity to hit the big plays, therefore we don't see many. So basically what i am saying is, it's not just the players, it's on Henning and Tony also.

 

That is such a cop out and a weak argument.

Playmakers by definition make plays.. They have the innate and uncanny ability to make plays out of nothing. We do not have players like that, PERIOD.

The Titans run a conservative offense, but guess what, they have players like VY and Chris Johnson who can make plays!

Ted Ginn is a horrible example.. He totally stinks in YAC. He has had plenty of opportunities to make yards after the catch but he is just not good at cutting on a dime and making people miss.. Plus his vision in short spaces stinks. He is a long-strider with high hips who has a low football IQ.. Ginn is way too much of a long glider/strider for his own good.

In the NFL those guys better be perfect in everything else, including some height and great hands, natural instincts, and a high football IQ.. Ginn has none of those things. Alvin Harper was a long strider (a glider type), and he had all those things - that's why he was good.

If you gave a guy who is a real playmaker like DeSean Jackson, all of Ginn's receptions this year, I guarantee you that the YAC yardage would be many times higher than what Ginn has produced.

That's because DeSean Jackson is actually a playmaker.

The dolphins would be smart if they drafted CJ Spiller, if he falls to them. That is a guy who is a threat to make a big play every time he touches the ball - whether in the backfield or coming out of the backfield catching the ball with his great hands.. In motion , in the slot- on special teams. You name it, he can strike from anywhere. His incredible vision, speed, elusiveness, football IQ combined is off the charts.

Like a Chris Johnson, James Brooks in his heyday, a Marshall Faulk, a faster Westbrook type... Guys who can make plays in a multitude of ways. That is exactly what Miami needs to bring this offense to another dimension.

Spiller is hands down the best, most talented, and most explosive offensive playmaker in the draft.

 

Go check it out, all our WR's suck at YAC. Cause we mainly run outs and comeback patterns. We don't set it up for them to get YAC. Some of it's them, some of its the patterns we run. CJ Spiller won't help us at all, we for one don't use the running backs in the passing game nearly enough. Even though we got some darn good pass catching runners. The Titans run game is way different from our own. We line up in power formations, the Titans actually spread people out. We have playmakers, they might not be the best, but they are able to make plays if you put them in a position to. A power run game is 3-5 yards and a cloud of dust. Spread them out a little and see the lanes open up.

We don't need another high draft pick used on a RB. And VY is making plays this year, what happens next year? Does he regress yet again? Leaving only Johnson as the main threat? People actually have to scheme against them to take one of their playmakers out of the game. We do that ourselves, by not even letting them be in position to. Watched us run a screen this year? It's a sad sight. We only have 3 players on offense who can go yard at anytime. Two play the same position, but with a power run game there is so many people at the line, that blocking has to hold up and be near perfect. Ask Rodney Hampton.

Also, Harper was so good cause he had Mr Irvin on the other side. Not to mention a pretty good TE there also.

 

That's just silly.. They are not good at YAC because they don't have the play makers.. I see DeSean Jackson run those routes all the time and he makes big plays out of it.

Did you not watch the Houston game last week ? The 2nd play from scrimmage Andre Johnson catches a hitch pass behind the line of scrimmage.. Then he makes 2 people miss for a 20+ yard gain.. You see kiddo, THAT's a playmaker.

Obviously you haven't watched them much this year. They play a lot of 2 TE sets and power formations.

That's being very generous.. Miami totally sucks when it comes to playmakers from the those te/wr positions.. They are near the bottom of the league in that department. A threat like Spiller would open them up - as you say other teams try to take away Chris Johnson (even though when they try he still burns them)

The dolphins have run multiple receiver sets quite often lately.. Apparently you missed the last month+.. And still, the big play ability is seriously lacking.. They need long time consuming drives to get down field - there is no consistent quick strike ability.. That's because they don't have the people who can routinely make big plays (that other teams have).

You need those quick strike playmakers in this age of the NFL. Running those long 10+ play drives only increases mistakes on the offense. It;s very difficult to run those 13 play drives without making a mistake - penalty, turnover, dropped catch etc.. In the NFL today, you are not going to run over every team in the league run blocking in every game. that's just silly.

You need to seriously watch other teams and see what a playmaker really is.

What the Dolphins desperately need is playmakers... however they can get them. and Spiller is the best and most talented playmaker available. PERIOD.

 

Honestly, when Ronnie Brown gets back, unless he doesn't recover, we'll have our playmaker running back. Especially with Cobbs to back him up, and Lou "First Down" Polite (who honestly, making every single conversion when its 1 yard or less all year, that could be argued to be a playmaker as well).

I very seriously believe that our team is a legitimate offensive threat, and that would have shown more heavily in the points if it weren't for horribly timed fumbles/picks.

As an opposing team, I look at our offense and I'd have to gameplan against Ronnie/Ricky, who when both are on the field can take it all the way down field enough to be worrisome. And when it comes to 3rd/4th down and short, I'm getting my guys prepped for Polite to come crashing through the pile. But when I think about the defense, I'm not really seeing anyone who legitimately gives me cause for concern. Sean Smith and Vontae Davis had moments where, if they can do that a bit more often, would make think twice about throwing the ball their way. But again, not yet, and that's about the extent of the people I'd specifically key in on.

Despite what this article says, unless something unexpected happens, or the coaching staff goes on vacation for half a year, we'll be strong playoff team. Not elite, but strong enough that with a bit of luck we can take it all the way.

 

We need a playmaker on offense? Really? I don't think so. We just need our offensive players to be consistent. The last two games we've put up 20+ points in the secomd half, and Henne's thrown for 300+ both games. I think we need to take more shots at Ginn deep, though. That being said, I do think we need a legit number one receiver...I just think our defense needs a playmaking LB or safety more than our offense needs a playmaker. The Dolphins have put up plenty of points in just about every game, but our defense has let us down in almost every loss. Give us some good LB's and a good coverage safety THIS YEAR, and we have three or four more wins easy...with wins over the Colts and Saints, two of the beat teams in the league.

We don't even use Ronnie in the passing game enough, why waste a pick on Spiller when we won't even use him in the passing game?

Andre Johnson is like 230lbs, thats like 55lbs on Ginn. He breaks tackles, and is hard to bring down at that size. He is a totally different WR then Ginn. Ginn is basically a speedster, he is not a fight for yards guy, not at his size.

And yes we do split out 4 wide, but do we run out of 4 wide very often? No, we run out of a power formation, or with just one or two WR on the field. Spreading a team out i think would help our running backs make more big plays.

I mean our best threats are both running backs, yet our screen passes suck. I have never seen a team so bad at screens. As for Desean Jackson, he has a seasoned QB throwing to him, someone who knows ball placement so the WR can be in a better position for YAC. Of course its not always a good placed ball, sometimes it just is Desean.

Look at Jerry Rice, how many big plays did he have just from running the quick slant? A ton, if the CB missed the tackle, it was a huge play. I have seen us do that like once this year. I just want us to find different ways to get them the ball.

I would love to see a guy like Dez Bryant in Miami, but i doubt that even happens. I think he would open up the offense much like Irvin did for the Cowboys. That would give us Henne/Brown/Bryant, the three combo like the Cowboys Aikman/Smith/Irvin.

I just think our playmaking problem is more then just the players, i think it runs deeper then that, that is all.

As for the Andre Johnson hitch pass for 20 yards. That is what everyone does to our defense, not just him. We made the backup TE from Houston look all pro. Making plays against our D has been very easy this year, ask Fitzpatrick. Look at the Indy game, nice wr screen there for a 48yrd TD also.

 

If Ronnie can stay healthy there arent 5 backs in this league Id rather have....I think before and even sometimes with the WC he didnt get nearly enough carries, this could be due to his injury history but from a talent standpoint if he comes back we got our guy.
