Interesting that Jake Long isn't even on this all-star team for the division, when many people believe him to be the best tackle in the league.

Donald Thomas as one of the best guards in the division just goes to show how poor are guards are ;p

Big Jake is a little gimpy I think it's slowing him down a bit.

 

Been saying that for the last three years. At some point, I think that we have to accept that he might have slipped a bit.

 

Long has played like poo this year (IMHO)… I know he is going to want huge money but he does not deserve a franchise LT type contract. I would much rather let him go and re-sign guys like Starks.

 

I don't think three years is really accurate. He was probably at his career best in 2010. 2011 he had a rough start after his off-season injury issues, but he was pretty much back to his standards after the first month.

This year he hasn't been playing to his standards, but he's playing pretty well, and I don't think a down year is unacceptable. It might be more prudent to franchise him and re-evaluate after 2013 then it is to sign him to a long term deal now.

 

Well, we don't really have Aaron Rodgers at QB.

 

I don't think there's such a thing as a QB making a LT look good.

 

In terms of pass protection there absolutely is and exhibit A and his quick release was playing for our team for a number of years. Good QBs take less sacks. In terms of run blocking you have a point however.

 

I don't know about that, but I do know there are QBs who can survive with bad line play. Like Rodgers.

Getting beat by your guy shows up regardless of how fast your QB gets rid if it. Sacks don't tell the story at all.

 

Case in point. You know Rodgers' LT sucked last year.

 

Yes. I know that. Tannehill isn't Aaron Rodgers, though. He may not perform well with just anyone at LT, or anywhere on the line for that matter.

 

Right, but its not like Rodgers was running for his life every play either. The point A4E was making is that in Philbin's schemes, deficiencies can be masked or covered, even at LT.

 

I don't agree with that. He was pressured quite a bit last season.

Masking the deficiencies at LT helps when you have a QB like Rodgers.

 

Peyton Manning made the entire Colts O-Line look good for almost a decade. They were seriously terrible lines, but the guy is three seconds and pass.

 

After Tarik Glenn retired, it was a revolving door at LT in Indy. And the offense hardly skipped a beat.

 

Eli Manning won the 2007 Superbowl in a season that saw his LT go down for the season. At that point they moved their LG over to LT and still won the super bowl.

Eli Manning won the 2011 Superbowl behind one of the worst offensive lines a Superbowl champion has maybe ever seen.

 

If you can say those lines were terrible, then do tell how can you also say Manning made them look good?

 

Both years he did have one of the best defensive lines in the league. Both times the defensive lines should have been the superbowl MVP

 

I don't think anybody who's being remotely objective can say Long is an elite LT anymore, nevermind the best LT. It'd be pretty foolish to spend 10 million a year on him. He got Moore hit on that td pass when it was a 3 man rush. Looked like a complete lack of effort on his part. He pushed the de and then just let him go. No excuse for Moore getting hit with a 3 man rush when he got rid of the ball as fast as he did. He's been closer to average than he has elite. I wouldn't give him more than 8 million a year and that's only because I'm not sure the good LTs who are set to hit free agency will make it to the open market and I'd hate to have to draft one. If the fins can find an avg or better LT in fa they should and use the money saved elsewhere. A good LT doesn't make your offense that much better than an avg LT. Factor in long is a big named average LT and it makes no sense. JMO

 

I would say the lack of sacks of Manning due to his quick passes. You only realize they are bad when the qb gets sacked like crazy *cough* Chicago Bears *cough*

 

Jake Long has actually been playing better lately.

 

You guys are not understanding the words you all are using.

Peyton Manning played great in spite of his OL. He did not make them look like a good OL. You know that's true, because no one thinks they are good OL.

If Manning made them look like a good OL, then we wouldn't know they sucked until he wasn't playing for them. This is not rocket science.
