Dachshunds are awesome. The ones I knew were engergetic, and playful with kids.

Too bad they're so prone to hip dysplasia.

 

I have had two sets of two doxies in my life. The first two were both minis (Bosco and Dudley) the second are a standard and a mini (Chorizo and Rusty). Great dogs bro. They are the most loving dogs, but they have the hearts of warriors (they were bred to hunt badgers) and they are often quirky and neurotic, stubborn (but not impossible) to housebreak as well. I never liked little dogs until I got my first hot dog, and I will never own another breed after the experiences I've had with mine. Get them from a breeder and check the medical history for epilepsy and diabetes, put those little doggy stairs near the couch and bed (if you think you'll keep them off the furniture you are so wrong) to protect their backs from jumping off and on furniture. Don't ever leave an unattended sandwich around, they are a lot taller when standing on two legs, and that is deceptive. They will bond hard with you, but they are not necessarily a one-person dog, mine love my wife, but not to my exclusion, and when my mother-in-law and/or stepson are in town they are very close to them as well. Friendly and playful, protective and fearless, naughty and mischievous, these are all accurate descriptions of the breed. Any questions PM me. And I recommend two of them, one is great, but the interactions between two are priceless.

Great pets but will almost certainly require surgery at somepoint in their life as their joints are awful. If you get one, you should build ramps for the dog to get on and off of things such as couches, beds, etc instead of them jumping. They also shed a bit IMO but being a cat person it shouldn't bother you.

 

Well, any "high-energy" dog will take a bit more patience to train. Honestly though, I can't tell you from personal experience training them (they were a good friend of the family's). And I don't know if they were minis or regular dachshunds. Just remember they were long, short-legged, and made my day when they ran and rolled at high speeds on the hardwood.

 

Not all require surgery, but a lot do, mostly just the ones who's owners did not take the proper precautions. Ramps, doggie steps, etc are important, when holding them it is important to use both hands, one to support the backside, or hold them on your forearm like a RB with the pigskin. Yes, they do shed, forgot to mention that, but brushing helps alleviate that issue (no waxing).

 

When I was little I used to misprounounce it as "Douchehounds"

they are stubborn but not too difficult to train, they are loud as hell and they love to chase away anything thats in their territory(lizards, birds, squirels etc)
Oddly enough my stepmom's dog doesnt try to rip lzards apart, he'd rather step on them.

They are very sweet, playful dogs and generally get along with people although they will bark at strangers.

they would get on the table and eat food while my mom was preparing dinner. then when they were punished/made to get down, they would go **** under me and my brother's bunkbeds. They were ******* dogs.

Looks like my little Rusty when he was a pup. Seriously, I hope you get her, you will love the crap outta her and she will be your best buddy. Mine love to curl up on the couch and watch TV with us, and on Sunday Mornings we take them to a dog park where they have a blast interacting with other little dogs. They're usually the hellraisers of the bunch. :up:

If you haven't already picked one out, maybe try a rescue. Believe it or not, pure breeds make up almost half of the sheltered dog population. Most breeds have a breed specific rescue as well. It feels good to save one.

I have 6 rescued dogs (not hot dogs) and they are amazing.

She looks like one my son used to have.
She absolutely loved Mo (his youngest daughter)followed her, would hang off her clothes and they would fight over a bean bag chair.

Sad to say, some idiot ran over her.
Now they have a dapple one and their older one that's brown (had her a long time.) Looks a lot like op's brown one.
You'll have a blast with her.

 

The first dachshund I had was great. He was very friendly and low maintenance. He died when I was off at college and for some reason my mom had to have another one. So the next she went out and got another one. I forget how old he was when they got him but he was fat from day one, and I mean obese. He was also a bit weird from the moment I got home. He's nice to me but he doesn't really care for strangers. We tell most people to just leave him alone because he doesn't like to be messed with. And I'm pretty sure he was that way before we got the pit bull because they get along fine.

 

That is true, we have a Miniature Pinscher and he came from a shelter and is already trained and ready to go.

Well worth the 50 bucks or so adoption fee, and the outside cats and Mr MinPin have come to an...accomodation, he makes runs at them, they ignore him, and life goes on...:lol:

 

Awesome video. Watching her bounce around that slick floor was priceless. Makes me want to go out and get a new dog since I miss my old lab. But I'm away from home 10 hours a day 5 days a week and live alone so wouldn't be fair to the pooch.

You wont find a more loyal or loving friend than a good dog.
