According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Dolphins have been calling the teams in front of them to gauge the price to move up, with an eye on getting their choice of the top offensive tackle prospects.
He specifically mentions the third spot (held by Detroit), but there have been reports that the Giants are willing to move the fourth pick as well. The Dolphins have three first round picks (fifth, 18th, and 26th, and six of the top 70 picks).
Assuming the Bengals don’t want to trade the first one to them, and Washington ends up with Chase Young, the third spot would offer any team the choice of Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton, Jedrick Wills, or Andrew Thomas.
There appears to be significant jockeying for those top four tackles, hence the recent reports that the Panthers (seventh)and Cardinals (eighth) are willing to move down a few spots if the price is right.

Others jumping on this now seem to be saying that the jump to #3 is doing so without giving up #5 but 18, 26 and a 2nd rounder.
-
Reminds me of a Wannstadt type decision. No reason to move up for an OT.

Only way I would be accepting of this is if we do not give up 2 first rounders this year and we stick at 5.
if we could grab the top OL and either tua or Herbert and still have a third selection in the first round this year I’d be down for it. Give up 18th a third and a second next year.
if they do not draft a QB they are doing this franchise and it’s fans a major disservice. I also think they are trying to smokescreen people at the last minuteresnor likes this. -
Don't overthink this. Miami is taking a quarterback at the top.
I'd wager this is just a smokescreen for the sole purpose of keeping QB-needy teams at bay (Chargers). Miami doesn't want to be leapfrogged or forced to trade up for a quarterback; if they convince teams picking below them that they're actually not interested in a QB, those teams will be less inclined to trade up because they feel they can get their guy by standing pat at their spot. It's one of the perks of picking ahead of other teams.Tin Indian, gilv13, ExplosionsInDaSky and 2 others like this. -
The mere thought of a team with a Top 5 pick and two additional Top 30 picks, trying to trade up just makes no sense to me. You have MORE than enough ammo to get your franchise turned around tomorrow if your front office plays this thing out right.resnor and thetylernator like this. -

That would make zero sense.

If anything I would prefer they trade down and acquire more players.

Jeff Darlington on ESPN kinda made it sound like a smokescreen.
-
99% chance its a smokescreen, but I'll throw this out there.
Maybe these rumors have a bit of legs.
Somehow make the trade to 3 while keeping pick 5.
Get Wills at #3, who played RT in college. Get the QB he protected at #5.
Its a splash, but you just build a solid foundation on offense. -
Now, if we want to move up from the teens to grab Simmons or Young, then I'd be all for it. But you don't want to move up on the idea that #3 and #5 are a combo pick. -
Yeah, lets hope it's a smokescreen....I will explode with anger if we move up two spots just to draft an offensive lineman. I realize how important they are...For some it's the most important position on the field, but I have that strange feeling like we are taking a quarterback and i'm not sure how I feel about that either at this point. If we stay at five.....and take an O Line player, i'll be fine with it. We just don't need to move up to do that.

Just about everyone on this board immediately replied "smokescreen." One guy said that essentially the purpose is the keep the Chargers and other teams at bay. People generally agreed with this assessment.
Think about the purpose of a smokescreen. It is to trick other teams into believing something that is not true in order to manipulate the draft board. If you guys don't believe that this is true, do you really think teams like Chargers think it is true? The Dolphins needing a QB is the worst kept secret in the draft.
I think that this thing might actually have legs.
Somebody made great point that this could absolutely blow up in our faces. A team could broker a trade with the Giants and slide right in and take our guy, and I was thinking about this point while I was on my run.
Then it dawned on me. What if you know the Chargers and other QB needy teams are not going to trade with Giants and get your guy? Impossible, right? There is one way that it is possible. If the answer to the question is Jordan Love. -
Trading up and taking a Tackle would be Ted Ginnesque in its ability to enrage a fan base with idiocy. Especially if it required crazy compensation to do it. Ultimately a move like that would blow the entire draft and make all the moves last year truly pointless.
On a positive note, it's the night before the draft and no one has a clue what the Dolphins are going to do or what they are thinking.
Kudos to Grier for not letting anything get out and completely hiding his intentions. -
Hmmm, I don't get why we are trading up?

This is from PFT:
The Dolphins aren’t trying to get the third overall pick from the Lions without giving up the fifth overall pick in order to make two picks in the top five. Instead, the Dolphins believe that a potential Godfather offer to the Bengals for the first overall pick would be even harder to refuse if the Dolphins offer both No. 3 and No. 5 as part of the package.
Per a league source, that’s the primary purpose of the Miami effort to finagle No. 3 from Detroit. If the Dolphins pull it off, the Bengals would then have to ask themselves whether they’d rather have quarterback Joe Burrow or, for example, the best tackle on the board at No. 3 and either quarterback Justin Herbert or quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, plus whatever else Miami would be offering.
Of course, it won’t matter if the Dolphins can’t squeeze No. 3 from the Lions without giving up No. 5. But if the Dolphins somehow end up with a pair to top-five picks, don’t be surprised if the next move entails an effort to get to the top of the mountain, via a huge pile of draft picks.Surfs Up 99 and Rick 1966 like this. -
I like the idea.

If they truly believe Burrow is the guy, I say go for it! Otherwise, just stand pat at #5 and take the best QB still OTB.
