RadioShack is getting a marketing makeover. Starting August 6, the venerable electronics retailer will change its name to "The Shack," a rebranding move designed to shed the last-century association with creaky radio technology and embrace today's digital wireless world.

To celebrate the name change, RadioShack will conduct a "Shack Summer Netogether," a live event featuring two 17-foot laptop computers in New York and San Francisco. Equipped with Webcams, the gargantuan notebooks will allow live video and audio exchanges between the two cities.

Wow, a 17-foot laptop? That's bigger than some RadioShack stores I've been in. <rimshot>

When I think of RadioShack, batteries, capacitors, transistors, and various obscure components come to mind. Yes, I'm aware "The Shack" sells flat panel TVs, netbooks, and cell phones. But for big-ticket electronics items, I drive to big-boxes retailers like Best Buy or Costco, or maybe browse online vendors like Amazon...

But why "The Shack?"

"When a brand becomes a friend, it often gets a nickname -- take FedEx or Coke, for example. Our customers, associates and even the investor community have long referred to RadioShack as 'THE SHACK,' so we decided to embrace that fact and share it with the world," said Applbaum.

I can't fault RadioShack for trying to upgrade its image, and I hope its strategy works. But it seems to me the retailer's biggest problem isn't its name, but rather its shoebox-sized stores. After all, there are just so many HDTV sets, notebooks, netbooks, smartphones, and Blu-ray players you can cram into a space that's slightly larger than a Jamba Juice.

Idiots...one of the few reasons why I go to Radio Shack is to buy...oddball electronics parts, their "modern" stuff is normally overpriced or not what I want, they do not have so it is off to Office Depot or Office Max.

The Shack
The Hut

radioshack sucks so i'm guessing the shack is going to suck too.

"A man's suffering is similar to the behavior of gas. If a certain quantity of gas is pumped into an empty chamber, it will fill the chamber completely and evenly, no matter how big the chamber. Thus, suffering completely fills the human soul and conscious mind, no matter whether the suffering great or little. Therefore, the "size" of human suffering is absolutely relative." - Viktor Frankl

I worked there for about 2 years and they should change the name to Phone Shack. The pushed you to sell nothing but phones. I got so tired of trying to push phones on people.

"The Shack" was bought out in Canada by Circuit City and became "The Source". The one at the mall by my house is still in business but I don't know how. Circuit City went boobs up and I NEVER see anyone in that store.

Gotta see that. Funny how the studio owned by the #1 enemy of the common man buried that movie so deep you have to know to look for it, or you'd never know about it.

The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future

http://www.amazon.com/Dumbest-Generation-Stupefies-Americans-Jeopardizes/dp/1585426393/ref=tag_dpp_lp_edpp_img_in

It’s an irony so commonplace it’s become almost trite: despite the information superhighway, despite a world of knowledge at their fingertips, the younger generation today is less informed, less literate, and more self-absorbed than any that has preceded it. But why? According to the author, an English professor at Emory University, there are plenty of reasons. The immediacy and intimacy of social-networking sites have focused young people’s Internet use on themselves and their friends. The material they’re studying in school (such as the Civil War or The Great Gatsby) seems boring because it isn’t happening right this second and isn’t about them. They’re using the Internet not as a learning tool but as a communications tool: instant messaging, e-mail, chat, blogs. And the language of Internet communication, with its peculiar spelling, grammar, and punctuation, actually encourages illiteracy by making it socially acceptable. It wouldn’t be going too far to call this book the Why Johnny Can’t Read for the digital age.

As soon as I saw the title, I knew what the name change would be.

When I think of 'The Hut' or 'The Shack', I think The Suck.

It's so retarded how these companies choose to abandon a known brand and go with that stupid format of "The" with some sort of slang abbreviation thereafter. I mean, how lame can you get?

You been hanging out with Lucky? Coffee just went out my nose

Anywho, much ado about nothing.

When I needed a ground strap and some dielectric grease to work on my computer, I went to RS. That is the ONLY type of reason I would go there.

Radio Shack sealed their fate with me when they were price-gouging during one of the Hurricanes a few years back. They were selling batteries at about 1000% mark-up... bastards.

Most of us here dislike RadioShack becuase of their lack of decent selection. We live in or near a large city, and there are much bigger stores with many more products to be had within a short distance of our house. For us, RadioShack is not much more than an electronics parts store we go to when we want something now instead of waiting for an internet store to ship to us.

But they are a multi-billion dollar company for a reason.

In less densely populated areas, RadioShack is typically the only real electronics store for MILES. Millions of Americans have never set foot inside a Best Buy type store. For those people, RadioShack is the best (or ONLY) option to buy consumer electronics.
