Ndamukong Suh Cut
...Blocked.
Was thinking that if that helmet did have a little assistance from Suh's soccer skills the cut blocks he was facing might have been the source of that frustration.
Won't get into cut blocks themselves, they should be banned IMO, but it ain't happening this year, if at all. Instead, saw this article and found the words from Jenkins and others somewhat reassuring. Aside from the issues with the linebackers and maybe coaching, it was good to hear, and I'm hoping, that some of this might well be fixable in terms of dealing with things that weren't expected (whether or not they should have been expected). That sort of thing can be more effective for a newly put-together squad who haven't yet developed the sort of reflexive responses and adjustments that come with chemistry and familiarity.
Plus, if this was a part of the defensive issue, Suh being Suh you know he's going to be watching for it and won't put up with it.
If other teams do try the cut blocking persistently it might also provide for some openings for the defense when the whole line is watching for it.
I suppose we shouldn't be surprised to learn that other NFL teams see our DL and know that most can't match up with them one on one, so they'll resort to other tactics to stop us. We might be in for some real raw trench warfare! Our DL has the talent, though, to make it something special.
The only other thing we're lacking is a name for that defensive line. I mean Wake, Suh, Mitchell and Vernon, then Mosely and Phillips? If that's not a crew worthy of an appellation I don't know what is!

Call 'em The Patriot People Eaters.

I hate the cut block in general. Dangerous play IMO. It feels cheap too. You can't handle a guy one on one, or two on one in the trenches, so just dive at his knees straight off the snap... Just seems to go against the beauty of the game IMO. It's cheap. Legal, but cheap IMO. Line up, man up.

If a coach is surprised by the execution of a backside cut block in a zone blocking scheme they should be fired, immediately. Its a staple of that offense, especially one which features Bill Calahan as the O-line coach. He has coached before you know.

I forget who it was, but someone showed a stats chart Suh's success, and it was shown, Suh was more disruptive when playing w/CJ Mosely largely because Suh was allowed to move into the 3-tech. Going forward, Suh should always be in the 3 tech. And if Miami isn't willing to do that w/Mitchell on the field, Mitchell shouldn't be on the field so much, IMO.dolphin25 likes this. -
Can we wait for the defensive line to earn a name with a good performance in a game instead of just naming it based on name recognition? That wasn't a good first showing in our nation's capital in my humble opinion.
-
Certainly, I agree, and is what I'd achieved that counts, but the point of the article and interview was that the Redskins method of dealing with our DL was a lot of cut blocks. If that's the case then an adjustment and learning curve should see a decent improvement.

They gave up 10 points and rank 3rd. I don't give a rats *** how many yards someone rushes for or how many total yards. Points on the board are what matters. Could they have played better sure. But stop acting like they gave up 30 points. Another point is that this unit hadn't actually played 1 single game as a unit yet AND hadn't played against competition except in practice for 2+ weeks. Geez.

on a sidenote, can a mod please fix that thread title....114 million man, the biggest free agent addition for any team and on a dolphins board the thread starter can't spell his name right...maybe we should have a sticky up with all the players names and the correct spelling....so many typos regarding our team...it looks embarrasing...its the regular season now, we will have guys from other teams showing up each week... -
We need less 'player safety' rules not more rules.
"defenseless receiver" = not allowing safety's to do their job.
Why are they trying to sissify an inherently violent game?77FinFan likes this. -
There's a difference between a contact sport and a combat sport. Shots to the knee are dirty, cheap and can end a career. They shouldn't be permitted.LiferYank, Tin Indian, thetylernator and 1 other person like this. -

And absolutely cut blocks should be outlawed.

There are plenty of other sports out there for the people who can't handle hard hits.
When a safety comes over and creams a WR who just caught a ball I love it every time, flag or no flag. Because that's what they've been trained to do. Screw their new rules.
If Reshad Jones comes up and pops a receiver after he catches the ball and dislodges it, i'm not gonna chastise Jones for doing his job, even if they throw a flag (with the new rules.) Absurdity at its finest. -

I'm a big MMA fan... these guys get paid peanuts compared to NFL stars. Galant was right in assuming i'm a fan of combat sports. That doesn't mean I think the NFL should be a combat sport.
But it just makes no sense to me to try and put all these safety regulations in what has been purposefully a violent game. That's a big part of the reason people love Football... as far as I knew anyway.
Anybody who says they don't like to see a big hit is lying through their teeth, I can tell you that much for certain.
Edit: rules I do support: leading with crown of helmet to another player's helmet. Nobody should be launching themselves helmet first at anybody's head. That is indeed excessive.Aqua4Ever04 likes this. -

Pretty much Wake, O.V., Sheppard and Mitchell were dreadful against the run. I thought Fede actually significantly improved run stopping over O.V. when he was in there.

There's a difference between aggressive, hard hits, and hits that are intended to/or have a very high chance of damaging the opponent. It's the same difference as that between sport and pure violence. Even combat sports have limits because some things are just dirty/damaging, and they have refs to look out for the combatants.
That's what this is. Refs/The league, supposedly, looking out for the health of players playing a ball game. The aim is to stop/run over opponents, not maim or seriously hurt them. Shots to the knee are dirty because if they hit there's nothing you can do. Joints are vulnerable and therefore joint shots should be illegal. To me it's just a sign that a player/team can't do their job properly. -
