Having Vernon or Shelby at that other end position on base downs would be my choice. Don't discount Shelby. He's obviously hurt but if he gets healthy enough to be 100% in training camp, he could factor in.
The Dolphins did a good job with the 2012 Draft for the most part and they also did really well with their undrafted free agency that year. They're going to get mileage out of Derrick Shelby, Josh Samuda and Jonas Gray. I believe they'll get mileage out of Chad Bumphis as well. I think that 2012 class will be one that is remembered quite a bit more than the 2013 class, and not just because of Ryan Tannehill. -

Wow, really good article on egnew from some objective eyes, James walker..
"It's early, but Egnew looks like an improved player in Year 2 during organized team activities. Egnew had perhaps his best practice of the offseason on Monday, catching three touchdown passes in seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills. "

TBH, since 08 our UDFA classes have not exactly done a whole lot, we should hit on someone this year simply due to the law of averages imo.
And, Philbin's statement "..felt like we needed Rb's to block better..." is huge imo, I've banged the drum about that most of the offseason.Bpk likes this. -

That said, I think when Randy Starks comes back during mandatory minicamp, Jared Odrick will move back to DE in the base package. -

Shame he bloomed so late. -
When you look at Derrick Shelby getting over 220 snaps, to me I'd almost say that's more impressive than Olivier Vernon's 450 rookie snaps. The reason is Derrick Shelby started off on the bottom rung, as a UDFA...the coaches had no vision whatsoever for how he fits into the regular season defense when they signed him. They couldn't, he was just a UDFA, almost certain to be cut before the season began. On the other hand, Olivier Vernon started off with the coaches already having a vision (faulty as it was, IMO) for how he fits and what he's going to do even as a rookie. Some guys are legitimately good football players and never even make it off that bottom run, either from lack of opportunities to show what they've got, or because the coaches aren't properly recognizing what they're seeing out of a guy. Shelby made it all the way from "sure to be cut" status, to making the team, to actually playing 220 snaps in the season.DOLPHAN1, Bpk, ssmiami and 1 other person like this. -

Considering he came into camp in better shape this year than he showed up last OTA camps, if Turner gives him ALL the first team practice snaps and FIVE preseason games that will almost certainly play this kid into the best shape he's ever been in in the pros. When you have a guy who hates the gym (apparently) and won't stop eating, you just give him extra helpings during practice.
If Jerry plays better this season, I'll tip my hat to Turner for reclaiming this guy off the scrap heap.smahtaz likes this. -
You know, if Jerry and Martin play better than last year, this will be a pretty good O-line. Not that improbable, really.

Well, it went uncommented upon, however Omark pointed out Wake flips to face RT's on passing downs, meaning..wait for it..Jordan is slated to play DE in passing situations.
If anyone cares to search, there is another sort of Cam Wake in the league atm, his name is Junior Gallette for the Saints, fmr Temple and Stillman player who I thought would be a solid passrushing guy as well back in 09 via small college focus.
He made PFF's secret super star list for 2013, and will get more snaps.
Trust me when I say, Jordan will be just fine. -
I'm with you on Jordan. Get him in camp and fast track his *** on how to rush the passer. No need to get all cute putting him at multiple positions or having him chase TEs around the field. We didn't trade up to #3 for an OLB, at least I hope not. -
