they were talking about Flynn signing with Seattle and got into a discussion about John Schnieder the Seahawks GM. They said his approach is that ever contract is signed over a beer. He takes the player, they go across the street, have a beer, shoot the shiznit, and then sign the deal. Laid back, approachable, and players can relate to him.
They then turned the conversation to Miami and said, on the other side of the scale you have someone like Jeff Ireland. He is Mr. Serious, don't smile much, doesn't give you the feel goods.
Basically they said a lot of times when signing a player it comes down to the small things, and just having a beer with the guy is one of those small things that goes a long way.
Goes back to what I said about Flynn not signing because of a low ball offer. That wasn't it at all. He didn't sign because he wasn't comfortable here. It wasn't because of anything else. He met Schneider...hung out with him and Pete Carroll (who is an experienced recruiter and shmoozer). He then leaves Seattle and comes down to Miami where he is now with Mr. Stuffy Pants (Ireland) and Philbin who should have a good relationship with Flynn. Flynn leaves, thinks about it and then decides he likes the SITUATION in Seattle better than he liked in Miami. Point blank. Who does that fall on? Ireland and his attitude.
Doing the small things now could help change perception, but a zebra can't change their stripes. Go grab a beer is not the type of guy Ireland is and he will never be that guy. Doing the small things is what it will take to change what players (and agents) believe about him, about the organization, and help right this ship.
Honestly...the only way this gets righted it by getting rid of Ireland, for starters.

Why am i supposed to buy any of this bull****? Why am I the crazy one for wanting facts before I help crucify someone, when this **** passes for journalism?
I quit giving a crap as of right now.Sleepy, GARDENHEAD, TotoreMexico and 9 others like this. -
Fin, he's right from EVERY acount I have heard about Ireland he's a total duchebag. He feels like hes doing everyone a favour and they should drop at his alter and beg to be on this crappy team. He doesn't come off as a normal guy but more like some I think I'm smarter than you business clown. I can only hope ROSS sees and hears all this negativity and finds himself a real GM beacuse until that happens Miami will be regarded as a Joke plain and simple.
Im not saying Overpay, but you have to in some cases to make them accept the negatives this team brings. We are in the bottom 5 franchises in the NFL now. Unbelievable 5-10 years ago. -
Don't know whether this is the reason Flynn went to Seattle or not, but doesn't it sound strange that a guy with the last name of "Ireland" won't have a beer???
Sleepy and Rocky Raccoon like this. -
It isn't because of the beer.
It is because of how Ireland relates to people, or doesn't relate as in this case.
He carries as much personality as white paint on a wall.
The issue isn't having a beer with the player. Flynn didn't sign with Miami because he didn't feel comfortable with Ireland, the situation, and what he was getting into. All of which falls back to Ireland.
Ireland has to start somewhere to change the way people view him, and in turn view the franchise. Small things can do that. Fly the wife or girl friend in so they can check out things. Do something special for the family. Send thank you notes. HELL...JUST DO SOMETHING SO PEOPLE SEE YOU AS A GOOD GUY!
Right now we are getting signings, but they aren't big ones and we are missing on big fish because our bait is flawed. We can catch minnows all day long, because those people have to eat. It wasn't like Hicks was getting the door busted down for his services. We can catch those guys with our bait. It is the big fish that we can't land and Ireland with the hook is not good.
He has to change or he has to go. -
Mod Edit: Not Appropriate.

I'm sorry, but that makes little sense to me. Players have very little interaction with the GM after they are acquired. The question is, how does he feel about the coaches. And considering he's been coached by Philbin and Philbin is universally loved by seemingly everyone who's ever met the guy judging by the outpour of positive things so many people have said about him, I doubt that was an issue. The Seahawks offered him more money. That's the simple reality.

Seriously though, who would you rather have a beer with? Wait...bad example.
-
LOL. However, Jeff Ireland is not amused.
-
Some people still refuse to believe the stories about Ireland I guess.
-
And why? Because Philbin knows that Flynn is nothing but a 2nd string QB. Period.
Besides, I hope our GM wants football players...not a date. lolSleepy, Hobiesailor, fin13 and 1 other person like this. -
Or maybe we didn't want to give a big time contract and "starter" status to a career backup w/ 2 starts under his belt. 3 yrs 26 million is a hefty price tag for a guy w/ as flimsy a resume' Flynn's and the length of the deal imples that not even Seattle is completely convinced that he's a long term answer. Philbin coached the guy for four years so outside of the Packers there's not another team out there with a better idea of what he can do. I'm petty sure he passed that info along to his GM so I'm gonna give our FO the benefit of the doubt on this one.TotoreMexico, Killerphins, Bulldog and 1 other person like this. -

OK, let just throw the BS flag here. Flynn didnt sign with the Fins because the Fins didnt offer him as much money as Seattle. That is what it came down to. All this other BS about Ireland is jus that BS. The media for whatever reason has latched on with Miami and their inability to land big names. They never look at the reasons behind why those people chose not to come to Miami. Harbaugh didnt come here because he wanted to stay on the west coast. Manning was a money thing in that the Fins didnt have the money under the cap to sign him. Flynn came down to the Fins thinking he was worth a certain number while Flynn thought he was worth more. What it came down to was that the Fins chose not to give him more money. Fisher wanted total control, that is a model that rarely works in the NFL and the Fins were not willing to give him that. Good decision by the Fins.
Hell, there was even a media report that Parcell's left because of the management (Ireland and co). The media forgot to mention that Parcells brought Ireland here and was/is his friend... and for that matter that Parcells is a boob.
Long story short, there is nothing wrong with the way Ireland does business. Players are going to choose to come or not come to miami based on the $$$$$ that they get first and foremost.
NOW, if we want to talk about why Miami's cap situation is so crappy considering the player they have under contract... well, different topic.Tin Indian, Bulldog, GMJohnson and 1 other person like this. -

Just the scenario where he asked that player last year during the combine if he was mother was a prostitute ??????? A General Manager in the NFL stupid enough to ask a player that should have been punched in the mouth. I do not care if Bryants mother was one. No GM or owner should say that openly to a player. Ireland is an assshat and Ross loves him because he can flog him all day long as many times as he wants and Ireland will come back for more. -
-
This time, the Seattle Seahawks know they got their man. This time...
-
We can only hope. -
And how do you know Philbin didn't push hard to sign him? How do you know that Phiblin didn't think he couldn't get it done?
Flynn's own father said that him and Philbin talked several times over the week leading up to his visit in Miami and that both were excited about him coming down there.
Philbin can push all he wants for the guy. Flynn can sell himself all he wants. However, Ireland is the one who makes out the contracts....not Philbin. Ireland is the one who makes the offer...not Philbin. All Philbin can do is tell Ireland to do whatever it takes to get Flynn, who by all accounts is who Philbin wanted. Yet Ireland low balled Flynn. How do you think Philbin thought about that? -

have to LOL at the fact that he says the jets are set at QB... -

Define situation. 1) no cap room 2) patriots 3) oops Patriots again 4) Jest best CB in the league 4) again best CB in the league.
Denver well what team in that division scares you, as a matter of fact if you were 34 and had maybe 3 years where would you choose to play.
Flynn a 2nd string QB you get paid 4 million not 8.
If the Dolphin team could go to any other division where do you think you would move to.
I don't get the hatred for the Fins but it's Lacanfora what about the other 4 teams that didn't get Manning, the owner not a "football guy" offers life time job the same idiot that told his HC to play the QB he chose and when it didn't work he fire the HC -
What am I making up?
-
All reports in the off season from Flynn, Rodgers, Flynn's dad, etc...are he and Philbin have a great relationship. -
By talking what his father said and assuming the only reason Flynn didn't sign here was because Ireland is an *******, is making stuff up.
