The great thing about bringing in a new scheme, new coach and potentially new QB is the resurgence of optimism, so I'll give you that.
Having said that, this feeling of optimism is pretty much the same as what we had when Jimmy came in, when Saban came in and when Parcells came in.
So, there's reason to be optimistic, but equally as much reasons to be pessimistic. I tend to be on the optimistic side. Whether it's Flynn (preferred), Manning or rookie QB, I will get overly excited for the upcoming season.

 

flyn is 500X better than moore. I'll reserve the right to be pessimistic until i see what we do on draft day and free agency. ive been abused for over 15 years by one of the worst franchises in the nfl over that time period. ill come around when i come around.

 

My guess is they sign manning but his window is small and I would be shocked if they don't use thier first rd pick on a player that can help him win now.Tannehill is not coming here if they sign manning.

And for the negative side of things:

1) agree, unless they are strapped with Manning and forced to change their preferred offense. Could break that energy they've got with our organization.
2) we can agree to disagree....We have at least 5 positions (OLB/DE, FS, SS, RG, RT...not in any order), other than QB that need upgrading this offseason.
3) IF Manning is healthy enough. Irsay spent $26M waiting on him last season... Serious doubt that we spend the money on Manning and still take a QB in the first. The only way is IF Tannehill happens to still be there at #8 which is debatable.
4) could be done but not really the Ireland way.
5) We don't really know that...maybe he's not a franchise guy, but the short resume he carries with him is impressive. You and I may not be convinced, but Philbin, his coach the last 4 yrs may very well be convinced. I'll concede to his expertise before making a blanket statement that he's not worthy.

I will give you credit for being the eternal optimist but:

1) We have an inexperienced HC and DC. They may be energized, but I doubt if they are any more energized than all the other coaching staffs around the league. Also every team is under pressure to win in the NFL. The fact is that there are many other head coaches in the NFL who are under a lot more pressure than Philbin, because he is only going into his first year with the Dolphins while some of the other NFL coaches under pressure to win have been with their teams for a few years or more.

2) The Dolphins have many needs. First of all they have to fix their biggest need, which is a quality QB. They have needs at RG and RT. They also have a definite need at TE. They also need to find a WR who can get open on deep routes. On defense, if they lose Soliai and Langford, they will have definite needs along the defensive line. They need two safeties and an upgrade over Misi at the LB position. There is a reason the Dolphins have been 20-28 over the last three seasons and the reason is that there are a lot of weaknesses throughout the roster.

3) Manning is only a fix if one, he signs and two, he is healthy. If he is healthy and he does sign with the Dolphins, he will certainly make the team a playoff contender. As far as Tannehill goes, I see him as a future bust and I hope the Dolphins do not draft him. Let another team waste a high pick on him.

4) I think moving up and getting RG3 would be the Dolphins best hope for the future. Unfortunately Ireland is the teams GM and he only knows how to trade down in the first round, not up.

5) I will leave it up to Philbin regarding Flynn. He knows a lot more about his ability to be a quality QB in the NFL than any of us on here. If Moore is the starter next year, I see the Dolphins going 7-9 or possibly 8-8. Moore is an okay starter against the other bad to mediocre teams in the NFL, but he just doesn't seem to have what it takes to win against the better teams in the NFL.

 

I find it difficult to believe Philbin and Sherman signed on without some assurances they would get a legitimate QB prospect to groom. I think the likelihood of drafting Tannehill increases if they sign Manning. I'm not a big Flynn fan right now but if he ends up being Philbin's guy I would expect someone like Osweiler or Cousins to be selected somewhere in the mid rounds.

 

I agree the Dolphins have spent a great deal of money on this unit. Unfortunately most of this money was a total waste. Of all the players you listed, the only quality starters are Long and Pouncey. Incognito is a decent run blocker, but he is not that great at pass blocking. Carey has been going down hill for the last few years and I think he is mediocre at best, right now. As far as Murther, Jerry, and Gardener are concerned, I am just not very high on any of these players. Jerry is inconsistent and is not an effective pass blocker. Murtha is huge question mark, because he is constantly injured and it is just an assumption that he would be an effective starter. Gardener is a nice backup, but that is about it.

As far as the Dolphins signing Saturday. Perhaps you have some inside information about this becoming reality, because I just don't see it happening. I think it is more likely that the Dolphins use their first round pick on an offensive lineman and Pouncey remains at center. I believe the Dolphins will select either Riley Reiff or Jonathan Martin with the 8th pick in the draft.

 

As I stated earlier, you are certainly the eternal optimist. I certainly hope your view of the offensive line, as well as the rest of the team is correct and that I am absolutely wrong in my assessment of the team. Last year before the season started, I predicted that the Dolphins would not win more than five or six games. I was told by many on here that I had no clue and that the Dolphins were going to win 10 or 11 games.

Obviously since the Dolphins have not gone through the draft or free agency, it is difficult to know exactly who will be playing where next year. I could see the Dolphins having a chance to make the playoffs if they sign Manning and he is healthy. I really don't see any other QB in the draft or in free agency who could come in and lead the Dolphins to the playoffs next season. Without a healthy Manning as their QB, I just can't see the Dolphins being any better than 8-8 next season.

I believe that the Dolphins will not be able to find their future QB in free agency or in this years draft. If Manning does come, he will only be the answer for two, maybe three years. Hopefully this will give the Dolphins the opportunity to find their QB of the future in the 2013 or 2014 drafts. Since it doesn't appear that they are going to move up to take Luck or RG3, I just don't see any future quality QB's in the rest of the 2012 draft. I would rather see the Dolphins take a chance on Kellen Moore in the fourth or fifth round then for them to waste a higher pick on any of the other second tier QB's in this draft.

hmm, I wonder what it takes to be proven a bull on any level if throwing for 4 TD passes in the National Championship game to lead your team to the National Championship and throwing for 480 yards and 6 TD passes to set team records for a franchise that had Starr, Favre and Rodgers. Flynn is just lucky I guess when he is on the big stage...then again Moore through for 5 TD passes combined in two games against the mighty Buffalo Bills this year.

 

He certainly must have made a great impression on the NFL scouts with his senior season. I guess that is why he lasted until the seventh round of the draft.

I have no idea if he will be a dud or a quality QB in the NFL. While he played well in his two starts against the Patriots and the Lions, this really doesn't prove very much. I just have to wonder how well he will be able to play once teams actually have a defensive game plan set up to stop what he does best.

Philbin has yet to tip his hand on whether or not he has an interest in Flynn. If the Dolphins actually go after Flynn in free agency, it obviously will be because Philbin has convinced Ireland and Ross that he thinks Flynn can make a difference. It also would not surprised me in the least if the Dolphins have absolutely no interest in signing Flynn to a huge free agent contract because Philbin isn't that high on him.

We all should know how this QB issue in free agency turns out over the next few weeks. It should be interesting.

As you know already, I am not a big fan of the Dolphins drafting Tannehill. My first choice would be for the Dolphins to make a blockbuster trade and move up to get RG3. My next choice would be for the Dolphins to sign Manning, only if he is healthy. As far as signing Flynn goes, I will leave that completely up to Philbin. I personally don't think Flynn is the long term answer, but if Philbin does and he wants the Dolphins to sign him, it is his job and not mine, that is on the line.

If the Dolphins don't get any of the three QB's I listed above, I would rather they just go with Matt Moore as the starter next year and draft Kellen Moore in the fourth or fifth round. I think he will be just as effective in the NFL as Tannehill, Weeden, and all the other second tier QB's in this years draft and he won't cost the Dolphins a high draft pick.

If the Dolphins don't get RG3 or Flynn this year, I see them still searching for their future QB when the 2013 draft comes around. Even if they do sign Manning, he will only be the QB for two maybe three more years and the Dolphins will need to find his replacement in the 2013 or 2014 drafts.

 

Who knows why he lasted? Not you or I. I figured him a 3rd rounder, but he wasn't all that tall, his arm strength is about average and he only started as a senior, when I recall they won the National Championship, and he played a very good game in that final game. Since you decided his draft status means something, think about the list of low round and UDFA QBs who have done well over their career. I don't have to list them for you do I?

Isn't this view a little contradictory? We have lots of needs but our best hope would be to mortgage the farm and trade up to get RGIII? I agree that RGIII is a great prospect but he is no more a proven bull in the NFL than Flynn is at this point. You can't discount Flynn's work in college without discounting RGIII's also and you can't speculate Flynn's being drafted in the 7th round as proof he will never be a Franchise Quarterback without remembering that other guy who was selected in the 7th round named Brady. Green Bay has had a good history in drafting and developing quarterbacks and evidently they saw something in Flynn for them to make him Rogers backup ahead of second round pick Brian Brohm. I'll be supportive of whom ever they bring in as quarterback whether it be RGIII, Manning, Flynn, Tannehill or someone else but I just don't think it is as cut and dry and some people seem to think.

 

My favorite QB of all time was Johnny Unitas. He was merely a ninth round draft pick by the Steelers who was cut before the season began. He was later picked up by the Baltimore Colts and the rest is history. So I obviously understand that late round draft picks do work out in the NFL sometimes. I just am not that high on Flynn and I don't see him as a future star in the NFL. Of course it really comes down to how Philbin feels about Flynn and whether or not he is interested in the Dolphins trying to sign Flynn.

I don't see the signing of Flynn exciting the fan base immediately and Flynn will be under a great deal of pressure to succeed in his first year. Especially with Matt Moore serving as his backup. I am not that high on Moore but I don't see that Flynn is an upgrade over Moore. Of course that is my opinion and as shown by the play of Unitas, Brady, Warner, and other low round drafted QB's or free agents, there is always the possibility I could be completely wrong in my assessment of Flynn. If the Dolphins sign him, I certainly hope I am wrong. I would just rather see the Dolphins trade up for RG3 or sign Manning than take a huge risk on Flynn.

 

I don't see a contradiction at all. The number one need of every team in the NFL is a franchise type QB. I happen to feel that RG3 is this type of QB and that he is worth the draft picks it would take to move up and get him. The Dolphins do have many needs on the team but none of these needs are as important as getting a top tier QB. I am not high on Flynn, Tannehill, or any of the other second tier QB's in the 2012 draft. To me it is all about the Dolphins getting RG3 or Manning this year, if the Dolphins are to become a better team in the future. If the Dolphins are left with Flynn, or Matt Moore, or they end up drafting one of the second tier QB's in this draft, I just see several more years of mediocre play from this football team.
