We could sign defense in the undrafted pool.

That's basically what they did last year and how did that work out? All they did was have some of their worst defensive stats in Dolphin history.

Dolphins | Miami wanted Myles Jack

    Sat, 30 Apr 2016 10:14:19 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Myles Jack was a target of the Miami Dolphins in the second round. Miami traded up with the Baltimore Ravens to take Jack, but the Jacksonville Jaguars took Jack two picks before the Ravens selected.

You are not going to fix a defense in a draft.

i agree one draft isn't going to be enough to fix all that ails this team. I just find it confounding that the Dolphins have now gone through the last two drafts and still not drafted a single LB.

Instead they have tried to upgrade this position by signing undrafted free agents and by trading for a LB who has been either injured or just mediocre since 2013. A starting LB core of Misi, Alonso, and Jenkins just isn't very inspiring to me.

Based on this draft, it appears the Dolphins front office and coaching staff feels that the offense was the main problem with this team and they set out to solve this problem. .

I just felt felt that the defense is a much bigger problem, but like you stated, you can't fix it in one draft. So we can look forward to another losing season in 2016 and just hope they can start rebuilding the defense once the 2016 is over and that next years draft will be one in which the majority of the players selected will be on defense.

I look forward to the 2018 season. Because by then, hopefully this team will have the talent to finally contend for a playoff spot.

Exactly. Couldn't stop anybody last year and all they get is an injured Alonso and old *** Mario Williams to fix it? GTFO of here. We passed up several potential star LBs these past two drafts to move up or down for scrubs.

    You forget Hewitt.

if he plays the entire next season like he played the Patriots game, I am inspired by him.

I thought they would go defense, but they went playmakers.

Dolphins offense just lost their biggest playmaker last season. They added two players who can take it to the house on any given play. Then they added a few players who can handle mismatches.

I would also like to have added linebackers. I loved Myles Jack. I would have been happy if Miami's draft was Tunsil/Jack. That is it. Traded everything for Jack.

however, You would have to admit, it will be nice losing 30 to 40 rather than 10 to 13.

It may not be bad this year. This linebacker might be pretty good. We'll see real soon.

Because they need a reason to b**tch. Had we taken 5 defensive guys, they would have complained that we didn't do enough to help our offense.

Maxwell is an overrated underachieving CB.

    Alonso is oft-injured.

Mario Williams is old and is coming off a bad 2015.

Abdul-Quadd whatever his name is is a big ?

Everyone else is a scrub or unknown.

As for our draft pick, I don't dislike Howard, but he was a second tiered CB when there was better value in the second.

I'm not crying about what we lost however, Vernon was fools gold for NYG and everyone else is/was replaceable. I'm just looking at our LB unit and depth at DE and I'm shaking my head.

Tell me why you think we're better on D.

Maxwell is not overrated nor his he underachieving. He was in the wrong scheme last year. That happens.

IQ is not a big ?. That's silly, with him and Jones we have one of the top safety tandems in the league now.

As for the rest, you're literally not making sense based on what I said. Who did we have that was better than Mario and Kiko and Maxwell and IQ last year? How are we not feeling good about Lippet, Hewitt and Wake compared to last year? Hell, Ifo and Howard have more upside than any CB we had on the roster last year as well. We also, most importantly, got a better DC.

You're acting as if I said our defense will be world beaters when I simply said they improved. They have.

How? How are they any better than the crap we put out on the field last year? Just because they're not the same players as last year doesn't make them better. If anything we've broke even because Kiko, Maxwell and Williams aren't dependable for different reasons. I understand scheme fit and all but Maxwell wasn't all that good in Seattle and Williams checked out last year. Not good signs.

Maxwell and Williams are as dependable as any other player. Our whole team checked out a good portion of the season last year. Plus the new CBs, plus the new safety, plus the new coaches, plus second year players improving.......the only way that adds up to break even or worse is if you spell math as meth.

So what makes them better than the players they replaced? Oh right, they're "names". They're not the guys from last year. Got it.

You homers can keep drinking the kool aid. The Dolphins have not earned the benefit of the doubt from me until they prove they can make sound decisions and win games with a winning culture and a solid foundation. They don't deserve it from the fan base. I still haven't seen evidence of anything really changing much. Gase & co. have a lot of work to do. I wish them luck. But I'll hold my breath until then.

Not much stats for Kiko, he was hurt last year and year before.

Maxwell as noted had a bad year. I'm glad Grimes is gone but you and I both know he was better than Maxwell.

Williams better than Vernon? Lol! Maybe in 2014 but not '15. And I hated OV last year.

Abdul-Quadd better than the revolving door at FS? Sure!

Our backups are about as good or maybe worse than last year.

Our rookies haven't proven anything yet.

    Still want to argue this?

I hope that coaching is the big difference because I agree with a lot of your points in that most of the pickups we made have big question marks whether its injury, scheme or whatever. We lost a few good players on the defense and replaced them with players that have questions so maybe it will work out but I'm not betting my house on it.

Also, why is it Miami never drafts home state players? When we do, we pick injured guys like Yatil Green or if they're successful we let them walk via FA like Miller and Vernon. FSU has been one of the top programs in college football past few years and we don't bother to even look at a single 'Nole? Now Tampa and Jax have issues, but at least they draft good players from Florida. Both teams are stacked with homegrown talent while Miami...ehhh...

You're cherry picking. Being injured doesn't mean Kiko is bad. There are stats, compare them to who he's replacing.

Maxwell had a bad year yes, but Grimes had a bad year and a half and is ancient now. Funny, how one bad year (in bad system fits) means the player sucks (Williams & Maxwell) but when a player has an awful year and a half in the same system they previously thrived in and is ancient, they were better. I mean with malleable logic like that you can justify anything. Its almost a super power....Spin-Man!

OV stands for overrated. Mario was in the wrong system last year. You keep ignoring that, which makes sense cause it craps on your whole point. But yes, up to last year when Mario was in the wrong system and OV was in a contract year, OV couldn't hold Mario's jock.

IQ is not just better, he's going to make our safety tandem one of the best in the league. If nothing else about our defense had changed but that, we'd be drastically better.

Some of our back ups now were starters last year.

LOL. you ***** we didn't draft enough defensive rookie talent, then turn around and when it suits you, say rookies haven't proven anything yet so basically they don't count. Stand back this is a job for Spin-Man.

Not really, its a little too easy for me.

Neville Hewitt, Zach Vigil, and Mike Hull were all undrafted free agents last year. They all got on the field and I would have rather had two of them (Hewitt and Vigil) on the field than the starters. At least there was some mystery there. Misi has been out of position. Jenkins was the lone bright spot. If all goes well we should have Alonso in the middle with Jenkins and Misi. Alonso is the upgrade. If he can run sideline to sideline, we'll see a vast improvement in the LB corps.

Misi should've never been in the game absent a tight end. He's a strongside linebacker-nothing more. Stuff the strong C gap and jam a TE. That's it. That's all he's ever been. The buffoon we had in the past attempted to turn him into something he is not. He's slow. Misi was slower than all of the undrafted LBs from last year.

The draft has an order. You can't pick them all. However, I always love the "home state" stuff. It's a statement that is old and completely oblivious of the fact that Warren Sapp was the Laremy Tunsil of his draft day. It's completely oblivious the fact that (four years after being drafted) Ray Lewis was in a strip joint with a fellow that murdered another and didn't "rat". It's completely oblivious of the fact that Michael Irvin snorted cocaine for the better half of his adult life. Yes they are all hall of famers and they all tote enough baggage to fill the cargo of a 747.

Thinking about the draft, two things.

#1. They use the word, "nightmare" way too much. Yes, it is unfortunate to fall in the draft, however when they are drafted they are still getting their dream job. Yes, it would suck to get millions less than you thought it was, however, you are still going to an NFL team. It is like calling winning the big Powerball, and learning that you were one of three people who won, so you will have to split it three ways, a "nightmare".

    2. At first, I disliked all of the special announcements, however, the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. Not because I enjoyed watching season ticket holders or other people announce 6th round picks. Them doing that caused the broadcast to talk about the player being selected. Years past the 5th through 7th round would be very little talk about the players and interviews with coaches and first round picks. Which I always disliked because I know a lot of 1st round picks, however, I know much less about these players. This year they did a better job of talking about players in the later rounds.
