That seems a little hard to believe. I think they just eventually realized they didn't have enough confidence in any of the other options to go and leverage the franchise.

While I didn't love the Bush trade (I didn't hate it either, I just felt there were more complete alternatives), I do believe that if used well Bush could be one of the most difficult match-ups in the league.

 

I'd agree with this. I don't think you'd flirt with QB's like Orton that would probably be brought in to start if you had a lot of confidence in Chad. If anything, their confidence in Chad might have been meant for his tools. I doubt that they had the utmost confidence in his ability to always use them correctly though.

''I think that fact that we looked like a team out there. The fact that guys finished plays; we just looked liked a team. We looked like we improved from last week and I think that that’s what the preseason is about...is about improving as a team, getting better week in and week out and obviously it’s been a long offseason with no football so I think that’s all you can ask for at this point is getting better every week. Learning from our mistakes, those things from last week and I was pleased with the way we performed today.

Chad … he did a great job out there. Chad was a leader, he took control of the game, he took control of the huddle. He did everything that he should be doin’. I was really pleased at the way he handled himself today. Obviously he played a great game; he threw the ball well. But more so than that I was happy to see the way he handled the offense. Even if there was an incomplete or something like that he still stayed upbeat because that’s what we need in a quarterback and he looked like a really good quarterback in there tonight.

I knew that I wanted to make an impression with this team. I wanted to make an impression with the fans right away and I thought that was important. I’m more about respect and I am about earning respect too. I have said some of the guys here know there’s some things I’ve done in my career whatever but you know you come in here and earn respect with these guys and not just kinda play off on some of the things I did in the past because I don’t think that matters now. This is a totally different team and I wanted to bring a different attitude to this team and hopefully lead by example and help bring some of the young guys along.

I think just finishing the plays whether it was a run or a catch finishing forward, finishing up the field. You know I knew we’d run the ball well tonight just because we have a good offensive line and we’ve had a great week of practice so there was no doubt in mind that we would come in here and run the ball well. But the main thing for me I wanted to do was just finish...finish at the end of each run, each play, whatever it was, when I had the ball in my hands or even when I didn’t have the ball in my hands. Finishing the play and that was really it.''

 

Brandon Marshall & Reggie Bush have now praised the way Chad Henne is handling the offense and team.

I hope Reggie carries over to the season. He could really be the jolt this franchise needs.

 

Been making this point since we signed Daboll. For all intents and purposes, he is our quarterbacks coach. The guy came to us with a pretty solid resume as a "quarterback whisperer."

 

Maybe Raf, think if Palmer had been available they'd have thought differently. About the only other option that I thought was a viable one this offseason for us...

I liked Palmer as an option as well. The only concern I had was about his health.

I agree with your earlier comment regarding matchups and that we are not able to have TE be a match up plus for us . I honestly don't know why apparently Ireland has not thought TE wasn't important enough to address. There have been all kind of options and besides adding Shuler ,Mastrud , Epps , and the like we really have ignored the position. I would like to see Epps get some first team reps and chances though , we'll see.

 

Palmer would have been an upgrade. I read on Insider that Orton, as a FA next year, would be a good mentor for a rookie 1st round pick. Da Bears, Da Broncs, and no other team see him as an answer.

Along with Orton, Young, Vick. and Brees will be FA's next year. Very, very, unlikely but we may get a third try at Brees.

i think a bet that Henne would improve is a good bet .... how much he will improve under Daboll is the real question.

we all know the relationship between Henne and Marshall is about 1 thing .... touches .... Marshall made some similar comments last season as well.

 

I have no idea about the labels. It's not something that they talk to the mods about.

I think next year is all about the QB draft class. I hope that Henne does well, but that we take a QB early regardless.

 

There are three "potential" franchise guys in next year's draft. I do not see us being in position to get any of them, as we are going to the playoffs.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if there ends up being more than that. We won't be able to say who until the season plays out, but there's always one or two off the radar guys that emerge. And if it is one of those years were there are 5 or 6 first round QBs then some will go late. As for trading up, I would definitely trade up for Luck. I might trade up for Barkley or Jones, but I can't say until I watch this season.

 

Based on what we now know of Luck, any team trading him would have no fans.

I personally believe that Daboll was hired as an upgrade regardless of whether we kept Henne or not. IMO, Henning had little time or will to develop Henne at all. He was kept out of retirement and it was his system and he expected Henne to play within it without tailoring it to his strengths. I still give Parcells a lot of credit for building a decent foundation here, but his biggest mistake was installing Henning as coordinator.

 

I'm not sure about that. Say Carolina ends up with the number one pick again and even though they lose Newton has enough exciting plays that he looks like the future. Most fans in that situation might just prefer Newton and a couple of #1s or more to just taking Luck.

He was expected to be the top guy (not by me actually since I never scouted him), but there's no comparison to Luck. Luck is the best prospect I've seen since Elway.

 

I have not seen Dorrell on the sidelines. Could he be up in the pressbox as Daboll's eye in the sky? They got Steve Bush in the press box as the WRs coach. Wonder if Ike Hilliard is then on the sidelines? Only offensive coaches I've seen for sure on the sidelines is Daboll, Jeff Nixon the RB coach, and Gugs the OL coach.

 

It must be a default setting when you register and make a user profile. You can go to your settings, and change it to anything you like. That's what I did.

We used Clay in that role early vs Carolina. Clay was used as the Z with Marshall in the slot and the D was stuck defending us with their base 4-3 personnel. Defensively you either have to put a LB on Clay outside (mismatch), a LB on Marshall in the slot (mismatch), or go nickel and be at a disadvantage vs any type of running play (mismatch). It's not as good as bringing in a Greg Olsen or Zach Miller but it's not as expensive either.

I think the media had a lot to do with that. They purposely over reported anything QB related, to the point where Ryan Mallet was viewed as a possible first round pick and the Sentinel sent a reporter to Mississippi to chase Favre rumors. A shame really.

Absolutely. Jerod Mayo-Brandon Spikes- David Harris-Bart Scott - Nick Barnett & whoever else the Bills have at ILB, who's going to cover Bush? None of them. They'll either go nickel, sacrifice a safety, or get embarrassed. Bess and Bush in the slot, Marshall and Hartline outside, with Fasano/Clay at TE or Thomas in the backfield as a run threat, those are some nasty personnel groups to have to defend, especially since none of those teams have a prayer w/ their 4 man rush looks.

 

Preaching to the choir. I don't see the type of personnel on the Jets to effectively stop Miami in their dime formation on their line. In contrast we have Cameron Wake, Merling or Taylor, Starks, and Odrick which is a fearsome rush. The Patriots have Haynesworth, Ellis, one of their OLBs, and Wilfork which is very good stopping the run no doubt but against an interior crew that has strength-size that can be passed on fairly consistently. Same goes for the Bills.

 

Luck is a generational quarterback prospect, the best since Peyton Manning. With him it is not a "he's a quarterback so he moves to the top of the board because he could be a franchise quarterback and we REALLY need a quarterback". He's the number 1 pick 100 times out of 100 because he is really really good and will be a top 5 guy for 15 years.

Like Raf said, no one will pass on him or trade out. The only chance we'd have at him is if Carolina ends up #1 (they would trade out) or maybe Tennessee (since they invested a top 10 in Locker) and we end up with a top 7 pick that we can use (as well as next years first rounder and multiple other picks) to move to get him. I don't see any of those scenarios happening to be honest. I think the Redskins will be the worst team in the league and I could honestly see them tanking to get Luck.

 

I see a RT in our future in the first round or an OLB. Ya I know really going out there on a limb.

 

I like my coordinators on the sideline, especially on offense. I want him to be able to look at the players and talk face to face with his quarterback.

 

It all depends on Henne. IF he develops and shows he is who most of us want him to be then Ireland will still be here and we'll probably go BPA (offensive line, safety, tight end). If Henne flops and we go 6-10 then everyone is fired and hopefully, whatever GM we get sells the damn farm to get a franchise type quarterback.

 

Even if I'm Carolina, I'm still thinking hard about Luck. If the Panthers finish last, then 15 years from now they could end up looking foolish for not spending two #1 picks in a row on QB.

 

Henne doesn't flop and Miami rolls on with him we could be looking at five first round draft picks made in a row. How many regimes have done that for Miami? Constant solid drafting has actually made this team a talented one.

 

I think a pass rusher would also fit into the BPA criteria. Elite safety, elite pass rusher, RT maybe, and I don't see any 1st round TEs right now (hopefully one emerges). Dwayne Allen from Clemson is possibly the top guy but I don't think he's higher than a 2nd, however he's a pretty solid dual threat #1 TE (upgrade over Fasano).

 

When the Skins openly say they're not tanking for Luck, it kinda makes you wonder if they mean the opposite.

I think any team that invested a ton in a QB the last two seasons could reasonably conclude that getting a couple of #1s+ would be worth trading away Luck for. And there's always the chance that Luck in a new system could struggle and that the inevitable over analysis of his game could make a few teams decide they like Barkley or some other prospect better. It's something that happens all the time, so even though I see him as the best prospect since Elway, you could almost guarantee that some teams won't rank him that highly.

 

I would agree but I think it is in Irelands best interest to state they had faith in Henne and didnt need to leverage as at this point they are all in on Henne, so portray that you were always all in.

 

Agreed. It's not surprising that he said it. I was just calling B.S. I think that Ireland really believes that you need a QB with the ability to extend the play and that Henne hadn't demonstrated that ability before this preseason. Most of the options, like Orton, couldn't do it either so what's the point unless he comes relatively cheap. However, Henne has shown the ability to extend the play this preseason so now he can say he believes in Henne (he also has no other options). I do believe that he had faith in Daboll and that he probably saw the other main complaint people had about Henne, ie. decision making, as largely a product of Henning's offense.
