Always interesting to hear his take on what happened even if you can't shake the feeling that everything he's saying is self-serving in some way.

I didn't really see him admit to "regretting" anything in that piece. Just acknowledging what happened.
-
I think the "regret" relates to his seeing that he was sitting on top of a fractured organizational structure featuring three sides all struggling against each other to make their mark on the franchise...and instead of cleaning it up so that he could leave the team in good shape, he essentially bailed and said it's time to let these birds fly or die. They promptly died.
He sees himself as being the dictator that kept that all together and then when he left it fell apart. That's his regret.Bpk likes this. -
I'm not saying he's right, I'm saying that's the self-serving vision he's cooked up for himself. In his eyes the Miami Dolphins were a 21-17 team during his tenure with much better personnel than when he found it, but with three personalities not co-existing well under his thumb and then when he took them all out from under his thumb, they blew up and went 10-17 until they finally pulled the plug on the structure and hired a different coach.
I'm assuming that he's saying he officially left the Dolphins after the Green Bay win.Bpk likes this. -

Fixing this organization was too much work he wasn't up for the task bottom line and he bailed.
I believe he thought he'd put some of his guys in the mix, they'd do all the work and fix it while he golfed and took all the credit. When he realized that in this one instance that "the poop would roll uphill rather than downhill" is when he bailed.mbsinmisc likes this. -
I think the game just passed him by. No more running the ball first. It's now a pass happy, non hitting, getting fined league.
In his day, I had a lot of respect for him. -

IMO, he brought us mediocrity, and no more. -

Yeah, he cried every check he got from us after he left for NOT GETTING THE JOB DONE... I don't believe it for a second...he could care less about the fins...it was miserable failure on his part and he probably chooses to forget that chapter ever happened...

Meh.
Ireland was not a Parcells protege. He was considered one of the best talent evaluators and was probably the #1 new GM candidate in the league. Yeah he brought him here but he also almost single handedly ruined his career. So, he brought him here but considering everything else, its like praising the weight loss that comes with getting cancer.

I don't see it that way, Stringer...if this organization turns the corner to some kind of lasting successes, it'll be because of what has been done since he left. His time here was a failure, particularly for a guy who's reputation was what his was. He'll be just another quitter in my mind...

My favorite quote:
Considering he was hired near the end of the worst season in Dolphins history, it was probably the least we could have expected from him.

To be fair to Parcells, he was lured here by Wayne H, asked to spurn an ATL deal that he had already accepted, and then Wayne H leaves after a year. You could tell he lost complete interest and engagement at that point. And he could have walked right then, while still collecting all of his money.
Right, but Ireland is around because Parcells hired him. That doesn't mean Parcells would be responsible for the team winning, but it does mean he brought in the GM that helped the team win. Even Stephen Ross says that he learned a lot from Parcells, and to this day still speaks with him. I understand the anger at Parcells, because there are a lot of things he did poorly, and didn't finish. But at the same time there are positive things he did as well. As I said, the final few chapters have yet to be written. As it stands now, most of the chapters are bad, but the story can have a happy ending.

that's his m.o. he'll never take over a .500 or slightly better team. there's only one direction to go to from rock bottom.
I don't really know how much better we were off. Like he said, the organization was not running in unison. We had a clueless coach out there and there were serious questions about our GM (and who was even making the shots). He came to an organization in shambles, rearranged the pieces, but ultimately left it in shambles arranged differently IMO.
I've never been a Parcels fan. To me he seems, self server, arrogant and condescending. He has created as much damage in the NFL as he has good and hasn't really won much without Belicheck at his side. At one time or another he has pissed off fans of:
Giants - Retired midway through the summer after all the good coaching prospects were signed elsewhere including Belicheck who left for Cleveland
Pats - Couldn't get along with the owner or GM
Jets - He retired but wouldn't leave so Belicheck did.
Tampa - He had a verbal agreement but changed his mind after they fired Dungy
Atlanta - Signs with the Dolphins after verbally committing to Atlanta.
Is there another coach in NFL history who has left that kind of legacy?
That's key right there. He says Ross, Ireland and Sparano all wanted to put their stamp on the team. But Ireland and Sparano are underneath Parcells. They only began to put their stamp on it once Parcells detached himself, which is when Ross bought the team.
Remember there was speculation from Parcells camp he was going to walk. But he didn't. But he really did.
Not to hear him tell it, he didn't:

the only thing I would credit him with there is the fact that he was hired. period. it wasn't until after his departure that Ireland started "shinning" and even that is still up for debate pending.
That might be what he's saying now, but at the time that was what was reported. I don't think its any secret he had problems with owners that tried to tell him what to do.
Looking back I now regret his entrance more so than his exit.He left the franchise hanging sorta like Jimmy Johnson.

Wow, way to only focus on the negative:
Giants - helped turnaround one of the worst franchises in the NFC, taking them to 2 superbowl wins in the best division in football
Pats - took the worst team in the AFC and took them to a superbowl, even though they lost, it was still a very close game. the foundation of the current Patsies "super-franchise" was built by Parcells
Jets - took the other worst team in the AFC and one of the worst of the previous 2 decades and completely changed the franchise for the better, taking them to the AFC championship in the process
Tampa and ATlanta are completely irrelevant to his legacy and it's just stupid to bring them up.
Miami - pretty much a failure. So, 3 out of 4 teams = huge success. that's a pretty good track record, as much as we hate him.
Ireland only got his head out of his *** when he moved away from Parcells' principles and hired a west coast guy in Philbin. Parcells never would've drafted Tannehill.
I think a lot of the principles are still the same. Ireland is the type thats going to stick to his valuations. He values smart players with high-character. I'm not sure if Parcells would have drafted Tannehill, but he did draft Pat White, who didn't fit his QB rules. I think what has changed is really the head coach and scheme.
