The "Parcells stamp of approval" is about as damning as it can get in my opinion. Might as well just cut him now.

He and Jeffy have a rift, so to speak. He's closer to Dawn Aponte. He recommended Aponte for the position of Team President after Mike Dee stepped down. Aponte is in line to be the first female GM in football.

Not only does Parcells reputation help us here but his understanding of the locker room and resume does as well. He admitted in a radio interview this past week that while he never told a player to go after another player but that he did basically ask other players what they thought of another player and mentor other players even player 1 was in direct competition with player 2. It wasnt something he did all the time obviously but if it was a vet he respected or one that he felt an opinion he could trust then he would go down that road.

I didnt like the way Parcells handled the situation here but his track record and methods have a decent history. Not perfect obviously but respectable certainly.

 

I don't think Stephen Ross realizes that, and after all this bad publicity, hiring the first female GM would give Miami good publicity.

 

I disagree completely. In fact, I think Bill Parcells is one of the most overrated coaches/GMs in the history of the game. He is the answer to the question..."What would have happened to John Madden's legacy if he came out of retirement and became mediocre."

The simple fact of the matter is that Parcells had great success in the NFL 20 years ago as a result of some amazing, once in a lifetime talent. After his first retirement, he was nothing more than a mediocre coach and a shoddy talent evaluator who put together a barely-over .500 regular season record and a pitiful postseason record. Not to mention he routinely opted for band-aid fixes, he drafted poorly, and then jumped ship or retired right before it all fell apart.

Besides not respecting the philosophy on dealing with first round draft pick holdouts, I know of no public information on player evaluation..

 

Not trying to support the move, but many last year wanted to bring in either Omar Kahn or Russ Ball, both of whom act more on the business side of the football operations than the player evaluation side of it.

 

That would give empty good publicity, yes. As long as the GM isn't Dawn Aponte, then it might be an acceptable move.

Obviously, most of the league's GMs come from a scouting background. There are only 5 GM's in the league that come from more of a business/law background, but it should be noted that 4 of them have been hired since 2009, and the 5th was hired in 2003.

One thing I do wonder is that as we see more GM's with backgrounds in business (economics) and law, will we see an increase in the use of advanced statistics and advanced analytics to help teams make more economical decisions.

It should be noted that while Jacksonville used the PFF study that shows just as much pressure is coming from the right side of the offensive line as the left to justify taking a right tackle high, they did trade Eugene Monroe. I would like to point out though that Monroe is not as good as he is billed to be, and that may have been a move made with the thought in mind that Monroe was going to be overpaid when he hits free agency.

 

We hate Bill, okay, cool. But that's as an executive. I'm sure Browns fans don't like Holmgren as an executive either but ask about Holmgren in Seattle or Parcells in New York and it would be nothing but good vibes. His poor tenure as an executive does not come into play in every context.

He's old school as eff. The way he handled his players was old school. He's also a champion.

I don't understand that..Russ ball's expertise is in strength and conditioning and on the administration side, and Kahn is a cap man...why did folks want those guys, why would anyone want their next GM to be an expert on the admin side.?

Well, I think on a superficial basis, many Dolphins fans thought one of two things:

1. By hiring Omar Kahn, we could probably get Bill Cowher to come out of retirement.
2. Russ Ball comes from one of the model organizations in the league, and the general feeling was that by bringing him in, we would start bringing in that model from top to bottom.

League wide though, I think there is an increasing interest in the use of not just regular box score statistics but advanced statistics that give you a little more information on the player's actual value rather than standard stats. I think there is a general feeling that your bean counters, so to speak, will embrace these concepts more freely than your traditional scouting background guys.

You could also make a case that as far as talent evaluation goes, that is the job your Director of Player Personnel, Director of College Scouting, and Director of Pro Personnel should be doing. I mean, seriously, the GM really only looks at the players that end up getting submitted by these guys in the long run.
