According to multiple reports, the Dolphins have decided to exercise their option on wide receiver DeVante Parker‘s contract. The option, which is guaranteed against injury only, will come with a salary somewhere north of $9 million.
If Parker plays out the year under the option, it will set the Dolphins up to make another call on the long-term future of one of their wide receivers. They used the franchise tag on Jarvis Landry this offseason, but wound up trading him to the Browns rather than keep him in Miami. Landry later signed a five-year extension worth up to $75 million in Cleveland.
Parker hasn’t matched the kind of production that Landry had during his time in Miami. Annual doses of offseason optimism about what Parker can do haven’t stopped him from missing time with injuries and his 139 catches for 1,908 yards and eight touchdowns had him firmly in a complementary role for Landry the last few years.
There should be more opportunities available for Parker this season and making good on them would go a long way toward making Parker’s stay in Miami a longer one.

[A] team must inform the player during the period between the last regular season game of his third contract year and May 3 of the next League Year (Art. 7, Sec. 7, (a), 31).Unlucky 13 and KeyFin like this. -

I'm a huge fan of and supporter of Parker. However, even those who aren't as high on him should be in favor. Barring a long term injury that would make him unable to pass a physical next spring, the team could always recind the option or trade him if they don't feel that he's part of the long term plans. That almost happened with James this year.
If he's able to stay healthy and produce the way that I think he can with RT17 back, then they'll extend him next year and lower the cap number for 2019. -
Not a fan of this decision.
The leverage we had was the lackadaisical DeVante was playing on a contract year. Maybe that would motivate him to spend more time on his body than being a Twitter whore.Tin Indian likes this. -
Thus guy has been a colossal disappointment. I would have waited to see if he could stay healthy and if the light came on.

"colossal disappointment" seems a colossal overstatement. If you look at his numbers from the games where he's played on offense, it averages out to about 58 catches for 848 yards over 16 games. Not eye popping, but hardly embarrasing either.JoshPh79 and Dol-Fan Dupree like this. -
Good move. The $10M turd burglar was the reason Parker didn't continue his escalation in '17. With Tannehill back we'll see the Parker we all expect.
-
IMO he is well worth 9M per year if he is committed to being a good NFL WR, however we haven't seen much evidence of that and our only leverage just went out the window. -
Cutler and Parker never had a connection. In fact, Cutler hardly had a connection with anyone who ran routes beyond 10 yards. Cutler's YPA was a pathetic 6.2 which stood 28th in the NFL, below such QBs as Jacoby Brisset, CJ Beathard, Mitch Trubisky, and Trevor Siemien.
The Cutler of '17, whom was removed from the booth and was coming off IR for a season-ending injury that required surgery on his poor, aging throwing arm, was not the strong-armed Cutler (which was the only thing going for him) of years' past. -

Let me help you on this one.
Parker is a big bodied WR who can use that body to shield a defender and make a catch other less gifted WR's can. Because Parker has a very good catch radius and you SHOULD be able to trust him win ball's one on one.
Ya see, once upon a time Jay had his most productive years with a guy named Brandon Marshall and another guy, they called him Alshon Jeffery. And one of the reasons these guy's had success was because they had a high catch radius and could win one on one balls. These guy's were/are what Devante Parker SHOULD be, but ya see....he just isn't because he has displayed zero heart nor high effort that it takes to win these one on one's I explained to you a few sentences up.
Perhaps your every day cliche' "I hate Jay Cutler" guy will look at your reasoning and assume Parkers down year MUST HAVE been because of the QB. But we call that hyperbole over here. His QB OBVIOSULY was not very good, but that didn't excuse Parker's lack of effort or tendancy to disappear.
Hope this helps!Tin Indian, Sceeto and Irishman like this. -
Especially when your drivel attempts to compare the Cutler of past to the one who showed up (barely) in '17. -
I never mentioned Cutler of the past, the topic is Devante Parker. So I'm confused what you mean by my "drivel attempts" when in fact I made no attempts at all to compare Jay to anyone.
Sometimes when a person posts a hyperbolic amateur hour post, kinda like "yea bro, it was the QB man" people who are beyond things like that have a tendency to point out that the player himself (in this case Parker) made his own bed of mediocrity and laid in it.
Need help with anything else just let me know! That's why we are here, to help people. -

The risk/reward on this is for the team to pick up his contract. The only real reason not to pick up the option is if we were srtiously considering to cut him anyway.texanphinatic likes this. -
We also took away our leverage to get him to work hard in the offseason, something he has never been accused of in years past.
I dont like the move for that very reason.....his work ethic and effort has always been an issue. -
Which plays or games stand out to you as him giving poor effort in '16 or '17? -
-
And a player as gifted as Devante thrives in many more areas than "downfield". Just because Jay was a bad QB doesn't mean every one of his supporting cast has earned some reprieve from their poor performances.
Jay sucked.
This isn't breaking news you are spitting. But Devante didnt play good football in 2017.
I'm open to changing my mind if you have cut up's of Parker being a victim of Jay's play.
I'll gladly observe.Sceeto likes this. -
I stopped counting plays left on the field by the qb in 2017.Carmen Cygni likes this. -
Its purely an administrative move. It protects the teams investment that can be rescinded. Parker isn't going to play for 9 million next year.
To this point, hes been cold crap (part his fault, part the whole offense sucking). If by some miracle he's worth keeping, it'll be reworked at a cap friendly number. -
People said Jawuan James wasn’t gonna play at the option rate too.
Sammy Watkins got $14 mil per year and he’s had inconsistent production and injury to boot.
Dvps a no brainer at that price to control his rights for another year.Redwine4all likes this. -

No one is questioning Parker’s skill.
I wanted them to pick up his 5th year because of his talent. But if anyone thinks he’s been giving it his all and is not a giant vagina they must not have watched him play much.KeyFin, Sceeto, Tin Indian and 2 others like this. -
When you have guy’s like Deandre Hopkins utilizing his ability between Tom Savage and Brock Osweiler, I laugh at people who pin a players lack of success strictly on the QB.Tin Indian and danmarino like this. -
hopkins is the most physical wr in football at the top of the route. and he gets away with a ton frankly. and Houston does a good job of getting him iso'd
something gase and Miami needs to do more with dvp and a qb willing to stand in and take contact to make plays -
But Parker wasn’t good last year, and that’s as much him as it was the QB.
If he plays well in 2018, it won’t be because of Ryan or whomever, if he plays lackadaisical (again) it won’t be because of Ryan or whomever. -
I wouldn't be surprised if he'll be part of a trade tmw.
-
It does make sense to secure him. Reportedly it will cost us $9.5 million to keep him which would tie him for 20th with Pierre Garcon. Will we keep him for the next two seasons? I'm not sure. We are paying Stills and Wilson $8 million a piece, and Amendola is netting $6 million, but none of those players have the potential that Devante Parker has if he finally breaks out and makes use of his frame and talent. The kid has a ton of potential if he can put it all together and perhaps with Landry gone he will get a more featured role in the offense, then again we could trade him away for picks but considering what we got in return for Landry I doubt we will get much more in return for Parker.
