I'm not concerned with his weight, I'm concerned with his arm, he should take up dart throwing and the shot put...
-
Will he be putting on pounds in the part of his brain that deals with him throwing the ball accurately?

I love Pat White. I've known him personally for a while. He played high school football across the bay and lives/lived in the area. I followed him at West Virginia. And I was extremely excited when we picked him up in the draft last year. He's athletic, quick, intelligent and above all the kid is a winner. He had a rough rookie season, which is something I expected. To be honest though, I didn't expect it to be THAT rough.
Truth is though, I believe we will see him a lot in the same capacity this year as last. I'm going purely on speculation here but I think he'll have his special package of plays that we could see 2, 3, maybe even 5 times a game. He wasn't allowed to get in as much reps last year as was planned because of the injury to Pennington. With a more stable QB situation this year I think he can have a chance to show the reason he was drafted.
He does need to improve his game though. Significantly. I love the kid, and am still happy with the selection, despite the strong hatred towards him on this board. I think ultimately he will become a contributor to this football team. I've seen him do it too many other places to think any differently.
So, I ask one more time, though my attempts have been futile to this point, just give this kid a chance to show what he has before you all pile on him the way you have been.mustang20241, DHPVW, BigDogsHunt and 8 others like this. -

As if he was the first Qb ever to have the crap knocked out of him, the problem is that is the last memory anyone has of Pat White.
To me, Pat White has to add 10 pds or so, he has to get over 200pds, and he has to have his throwing motion ironed out, I despise excuses, however David Lee did White no favors when he tried to change his throwing motion as now White looks like he lost some confidence in his arm. -
-
I'm in the minority that still believes in Pat White's Qb ability, right now though, D Lee and the rest of the staff should sit down and have a no ****ter with each other concerning Pat White's Qb mechanics and what they are trying to do with him.
Whatever it was they did, against Pitt PW looked uncertain along with bouncing a ball on a dirt simple out route, heck the play he was knocked out on was a pass and he just decided to bootleg with the ball instead of dumping the ball off to the Te..which was what the play called for...Bpk likes this. -
The first being Pat White himself. The kid is a winner and a gamer. He didn't lead West Virginia to 4 straight bowl victories (only QB in college football history to do so) and get named MVP of the Senior Bowl by being pretty. He certainly didn't do it by being "inaccurate" and contrary to the idea that's been permeated throughout this board and other sources he didn't do it by running the option on every single play. I would suggest going back and watching film of Pat White. Unfortunately the best resource is probably youtube which you'll find mostly highlight films. And everyone looks good in highlight films, so it doesn't prove my point as much as I would like. But this kid has some tremendous talent.
The second point I would like to address is that I don't think you can call the pick a "waste" or call it a "failed experiement" after last year. Pat White was brought in to run a specific package of plays and to be the part time trigger man in the wildcat. That's what he worked on a majority of TC last year. Come week 3 Chad Pennington goes down with an injury. Well now White is one play away from being the starter. Weekly practices now become more about him learning to be the starting QB on the fly while still trying to learn his package. Excuses have been made ad naueseum for Jason Allen to still be on this team 3 regimes and 5 years later, and a lot of it has been because "he's never had a chance to get familiar with a position before he's been changed." And the same is true of White. He didn't change positions but his role changed drastically after week 3 of last year. He deserves another shot.
And my third point is, as more and more college offenses move to the spread, the more prevalent the spread is becoming in the NFL. Nearly every team currently runs some variation of the spread. When the Pats went 18-1 they used the spread formation nearly 60% of the time that season (I read this statistic a while back and can't remember exactly what the # was so don't crucify me for that one.) The wildcat itself is a variation of the spread. Pat White was one of the best spread QBs in college football. He has a better skill set than Tim Tebow IMO. Pennington can't run the spread. Henne may be able to, but I've never seen him do it. So with the increase in the viability of the spread offense in the NFL, I see Pat White being a valuable commodity for us.
With all this being said, I don't want you to think I'm simply a homer defending Pat White. I will openly admit that he needs to improve his game. He needs to get bigger, he needs to work on his throwing mechanics and footwork more and above all I think he needs to have time, in his role, in this offense to begin to fully comprehend and understand what he needs to do.
Of course, these are all my opinions, I could be wrong.HugeFinFan, BigDogsHunt, phineas64 and 8 others like this. -
Pat White can play ball. Let's let him do it.
-
Ok he's trying to put on weight. Has he though?
-
i like our chances better with thigpen as a backup. he can run come in and run the spread if needed.
i just don't see pat white as an nfl qb i really don'tTin Indian, gunn34 and FinsAreLife like this. -
Im praying for Pat White to work out, seriously i want him to do well. But honestly, i just think the way youve described the situation is spot on. Pat White would have been there in the third round...maybe even in the 4th round. We just blew the pick, no other way to put it. -
Alrighty, I've heard it all about Pat White, since there are so many people so down on the guy, I shall be one of his largest fans..which means out goes Smiling Happy Wally Buono, in goes Pat White for my Avie.
I just need one of those "The Orca Five" type colorized posts to say:
"2010 is the Year Pat White proves his doubters wrong!!
:D
BTW...take note of the Avie pic, no Dolphin on the helmet, meaning it comes from Training Camp 2009, where it all started.Bpk, Stringer Bell and Big E like this. -
And i assure you, the pats would use him better than we have. We might as well throw white out there with a big giant target on his chest cause defenses just tee off on him when he gets in. We've been way to obvious with White's playcalling. Every play was an outside sweep or inside hand-off. Why would defenses respect him if we only call 2 plays when he's in? -

I Don't think there is a true Dolphin fan anywhere that doesn't hope he is right. All signs are currently pointing south though. -
-
The bad thing for White is that I think Thigpen is athletic enough to run the spread pretty well himself. I know he was involved in several such plays in Kansas City. And we already know Thigpen can make NFL throws. I really think White should be moved to a different position.

We will know what is happening with White rather quickly this preseason, if he is hitting the Tuna's Golf Cart (and didn't mean to) and throwing over the fence etc, we know we have a dud, if he doesn't spray the ball around and his passes are crisp, then White will have improved in the offseason. -

I too am surprised with all the hate on Pat. The kid was a rookie QB, I'm not sure what everyone expected from him... His play was down right atrocious, even in packages designed to leverage his strengths. However, those saying "the experiment" is over after a down ROOKIE year, are way off base, IMO. Give the guy another year or so to become acclimated to the speed of the NFL and build an NFL body, then let's judge his performance.
-
And...... the FO wakes up, realizes that nothing we could do from his "little package" is worth taking snaps away from the base offense. -
-
One thing about White, with John Beck "We" all heard about his problems in TC, both under Cameron and under Sparano, no huddle presence, not a leader, there has been none of that with White.
He is one of the players I'm looking forward to see this preseason, along with Wake, the Rooks, and RGM/T Davis/K Sheets.jetssuck likes this. -

The Wildcat is a smash mouth formation that goes well with what we do on offense.....the WildPat looks more like the coaches taking the "college formation" thing too far.
If given the choice between sending White out there on first down and hope he doesn't leave the field on a stretcher......or just let Henne play-fake and go down field...I'm going with Henne every time.
Keep the WC, bury the Wildpat and his little package......using both of those takes too many snaps from the base offense. -
Is he or that little package worth that? Personally, I think he's roster clutter... -
Every play is designed to score a touchdown. Even a dive can score a touchdown if everyone on offense executes, we all know that. So if pat White proves he can execute, and we have no idea whether he can or not yet, then it's okay for him to be out there.
I agree that Henne should probably remain on the field at all times, but i also believe ANYONE can throw it to Brandon Marshall successfully. And that includes Pat White. Put Pat in there, have him throw a fade or hook to Marshall, and then defenses will at least acknowledge that the dolphins will call a pass play when we put White in. That fact alone will change how defenses approach us. -
The more things you can do successfully on the offensive side of the ball the more defenses have to prepare for. The more you make defenses prepare for something, the better chance of something working the way you want it to. -
Pat White has the tools to fill a unique role in this offense, "sorry" but Sheets or Davis or RGM are meat filler until they prove otherwise.
That does not mean I don't like their games, it does mean on Survivor Miami, they can be voted off at any time..they have to prove they belong on the island and plan on staying on it.

Do tell JS...what do Chad Pennington and Chad Henne and Pat White have in common? -

So let's not single out Pat White for being jacked up, Pennington and Henne were as well.
