The NFL pays and drafts highly talented defensive tackles and other defensive linemen for a reason. The entire league is full of interior OL that get tossed around like rag dolls on occasion. Miami was not unique.

 

Yeah, except Miami was supposed to be a power running team. Miami ran the ball primarily in the C-G & G-T gaps, and Incognito was the primary (ill-suited) pulling guard. John Jerry went down after Week 2. Berger went down after the Tennessee game. Procter backed Berger up for 2 series before he also went down, moving Incognito to C, McQuistan to LG and Jerry to RG. By the end of the season we had used 3 Centers, 3 RTs, 3 LGs, and 2 RGs, none of whom performed any better than slightly above average. Even Carey's play was slightly disappointing, just ask Chad Pennington. We used 3 different QB's, 4 if you count the WC, so in some respects we most certainly were "unique".

I find your ability to make excuses and dismiss poor performance from the interior OL, a unit which the FO has spent several draft picks and big $ FA contracts on, in stark contrast to your laser like fixation on, and refusal to accept plausible explanations for, subpar QB play. Don't NFL teams draft highly talented defensive backs for a reason as well? Don't these DB's make QB's look ordinary or worse on occasion as well? Just sayin.

I like how you preemptively complained about someone making the other offensive line thread about Chad Henne and then as soon as a mod stepped in and deleted that you move to the other thread and do exactly what you complained about.

 

You know, I've always wondered why Guards/Centers are considered so much less valuable/important than tackles, especially when draft-time comes around.

The way I see it is that interior blocking can be even more important than outside (I do understand the importance of the blindside OT). Obviously its important for the run game but also--A pass-rush up the middle is much harder to avoid than a DE around the edge. Much more disruptive all around. Just think how much of an impact guys like Haynesworth (when trying) and Suh can have on a game (The Lions D will be nasty nowdays)--when those guys are on, you're whole Offense is disrupted. This is why I don't mind the Pouncey pick at all--building a strong interior OL would be huge for the entire offense, running and passing the ball.

I suppose the common thinking is that Guards/Centers are easier to come by, but while I'm no expert, it sure seems like a elite interior line is a pretty big deal.

 

On a side note, anyone notice who's the 4th worst pass-blocking Center in that article?

It's because those positions rely more on technique than the offensive ends. Coaches feel that they can teach them technique and get them to play well instead of spending high resources on them.

 

I don't really put much stock into their lists but Pouncey did play pretty well. He had issues, but he also had some really good moments which is why he's highly regarded so quickly.

 

I'd wonder more about the Pro Bowl voting than I would about PFF. I think they look a little more in depth than does the typical fan or even player casting a Pro Bowl ballot.
I'd be interested to know where Maurkice ranks as a run blocking Center according to PFF.

 

Solai beat that dude up all game, I was goofin on him all game.. It was pretty to watch him dominate him, mangold twice, and any other meat that got in front of him.

 

Not bad for a guy who started the season as a backup. I wonder what happens if Odrick never got hurt...?

Its hard to fathom that there is a strong possibility that we have a 1st round pick on the bench...1st player off the bench yes, but off the bench nonetheless.

Were deep, big, strong, and good...bring it on..

 

Our 2nd player off the bench will be the 32nd overall pick. That's why I don't think we'll be able to keep McDaniel, even though he did a great job for us. either way we'll have a good rotation at DE. Good talent, good depth, we're in good shape IMO. OLB is another story, if Wake goes down we're screwed.

 

He ranked 15th out of 34 Centers who played at least 25% of their teams snaps in run blocking.

Barring injury, I see no way Odrick beats out Langford or Starks. If he can stay healthy, he gives us good depth for 2011, along with Merling.

Understood and I want you to talk football because you are a knowledgeable person. The policing and deletions wouldnt be necessary if people stuck talking football. We tried it that way, it didnt work, so now we are back to the original way the board was run.

It has nothing to do with why you are a mod or why you arent. I didnt put myself in this position, I was asked to be. Just as all the other mods were asked to be because they earned that right and proved they could adhere by the rules we put in place.

 

Hate to change the subjects but, Berger was #13 on pass, #20 on run. Pouncey was down the line because he gave up 3 sacks, 4 hits, and 17 pressures, which are more than the guys ahead of him.

To your point, I didnt see much of Pouncey last year, but I'd be careful w/ the pressure #s b/c Roethlisberger holds he ball so much.

 

That's the advantage in PFF's grades and rankings. They watch the plays before assigning the blame.
