I don't really think it's safe to assume Matthews is inherently the issue, as much as it is Philbin overreacting to him not being a model citizen. This is "middle management" territory, and that's what Philbin is good at, if anything.

I disagree. If you want a multimillion dollar paying job, playing a game, you are never late for a meeting, unless an emergency happens. They are trying to change a culture here. That might be part of it. Be a professional.

Actually it was reported that Hickey and Philbin did talk to Pouncey. Both about the Cogs/Martin incident, and the tweets after James was drafted.

That's a pretty gray area to make assumptions on the coach, I will say this, I watched a Lot of stuff on the kid Predraft/post-draft and this news goes against anything that I thought he would of turned out to be..I thought he was totally engaging and a hard worker in his offseason preparation..
Maybe it's just about being attentive in the classroom, which isn't easy for some folks.. -
With millions of dollars on the line, you'd think that players could at least stay in shape (Knowshon Moreno, Karlos Dansby) and show up to meetings on time (Rishard Matthews).

Dansby was during the lockdown, and he got real paid anyway. Moreno... I think Armondo is blowing it out his butt. have you seen pics of Moreno? Maybe he meant that marshall guy that got cut and screwed up his notes.

I'm not impressed with Richard Mathews. He cost us the Carolina game with drops and bobbles for int's. Ireland was terrible drafting offense. Hopefully Binns shows continues where he left off and Damian Williams unseats Thigpen on returns.

Son of a marine, has always struggled academically, had a scholarship on the table for Oregon, couldn't meet their standards, had to sit out because of poor Academics, father seemingly was tough, he moved out young then came back because he wanted the discipline, what he accomplished in less than two years at nevada was pretty special, pass catching and punt return..
I don't see any off the field trouble stuff just slow at the academics..

Yes, it was. Daniel Thomas was late for a plane and in violation of the dress code, and Philbin sat him down for a talk about priorities and professionalism. The infamous "I'm getting queasy you speech" that was on HK.
Easy to google this stuff... amusing that people think that Philbin, as anal retentive as he is, would turn a blind eye to Pouncey during or after replacing 4/5 of the OLine.
Philbin and/or Ireland and Hickey have had talks with Daniel Thomas, Chad Johnson, Rishard Matthews, Mike Pouncey, and Cogs, Jerry, and Martin of course. Philbin also had the televised sitdown with Dansby, Bush, and Long on HK.RoninFin4 likes this. -

Anyone who gives a rats behind about what they're doing isn't regularly late. Its offensive. I don't really like Philbin, but I'm 100% for holding guys accountable for doing the very basics of their job.

It isn't even about being a professional... It's about respect for yourself. Imagine you had the talent to play in the NFL. How or why anyone would screw around with that opportunity is beyond me. You get to play the funnest game there ever was, hang out with your buddies all day, live like a college student, and rake in more money than the vast majority of population will in their lifetime. You've got to be mentally deficient in some way to be that guy who goofs around. There is no player I hate more than the underachiever.

The 4th and 10 during a 80 yard touchdown drive with less than 2 minutes remaining had more to do with losing the Carolina game.
Richard Mathews had two big amazing catches in victories that more than made up for that. -
