Forgive me if this has been posted anywhere, I didn't see it posted and if it was, mods, feel free to delete this thread.
This is an interesting video and quite frankly some of the things mentioned by Philbin leave me a little uneasy about this coaching staff.
I've liked Philbin so far and thought he was a great choice as the coach of this franchise but lately some seeds of doubt have been planted in my mind about this whole coaching staff. Philbin has always been characterized as a meticulous detail-oriented coach, and while some of these traits can be a good thing, too much of them can be a bad thing in my opinion.
In regards to the video, I didn't like some of the comments Philbin made such as:
-When he refuses to admit that the spike with 1 minute left may have been a bad idea
- Dismissing the notion that the they might try other guys on the OL
-When the journalist asked him about the Tannehill scramble that lead to the 4th down conversion and he answers saying that while he liked the play, it wasn't a designed and so on...
I don't know exatcly how much of this is just Philbin not wanting to throw players under the bus or not wanting to give away too much info to the media... but, based on not only his replies in this video but also on the recent perfomance of this team, Philbin (and the coaching staff as a whole) is starting to come off to me as a rigid, stubborn, unimaginative person who refuses to change his ways. It seems to me as if they are handcuffing Ryan Tannehill and the offense and basically trying to turn them into robots while reprimanding them for on-the-fly improvisation like the scramble.
Don't take this as a negative post as I am a really big homer and you will hardly ever see me ranting... I just really hope I'm wrong here and that my initial thoughts on Philbin were the right ones, but this is just what's been going through my mind these last few weeks...

He made the call, and thought it was the correct call, to spike it after the 4th down conversion. This concerns me, a lot. It was a horrible decision and he has to take the bullet. It may have cost us a chance at overtime.

I agree with Philbin on all 3 points.

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly why there are clear problems on any of those.

I'm only about two and a half minutes in and he's already covered a lot of the topics I keep hearing about yet I have no problem with what he's said.
Follow up question on the spike came off borderline like a journalist trying to assert a straight up "you were wrong and we all knew it" thing. Philbin actually did a good job explaining all the things that were important about that play (1:01 left on the clock, a big play off an in-bounds pass, he made that decision and nobody else did, thought it was the best idea). Then the reporter follows up asking why he thought it was a good idea and it's kind of like, what else do you want me to say? I made a judgment call. Philbin had even said that he thought they had a good couple of plays dialed up on 2nd/3rd down and that was part of his reason.
I've seen plenty of other coaches show a LOT less patience answering a pair of questions like that. Whoever that reporter was, he should probably spend a week covering Nick Saban. If he dared ask a follow up question like that to Saban, Nick would have the reporter brought to a torture chamber to have his skin melted off one inch at a time with a Bic lighter.
His answer about seeking upgrades at the position...I mean, what do you want here? There WAS evidently a Eugene Monroe trade dangling out there. For whatever reason Ireland didn't pursue it. Now there's nada. Guys still available in October aren't exactly known for being saviors.
His answer about whether he's going to make any changes during the bye on the offensive line...his answer told me one thing and one thing only: he hasn't decided yet, or if he has he hasn't told the players yet. Don't expect him to give that info out before he's even made a decision or told the players involved that their dream ends today.
His answer about scrambling on 4th down seemed very coach like. We don't design it that way and if all goes according to plan he doesn't need to do that, but it's nice that he's able to and those two plays were really tremendous plays.
I didn't like his explanation about the lack of ground game though. That one smelled like trying to sweep a problem under the rug as quickly as he could without drawing unnecessary attention to it.Canad-phin, PhinsRock, siciliansith and 7 others like this. -
We make a HUGE play, Tannehill hits Gibson on 4th down with 1:22 left in the game. We spiked it with 1:01 left in the game. We spent :21 running to the line and spiking it. We were in field goal range. We still had :19 seconds on the play clock when we spiked it.
Why waste a down? In the :21 we spent getting to the LOS we could have called a play, gotten to the line and conceivably snapped the ball with :15 left on the play clock and :55 left on the game clock.
The Ravens were likely shaken from giving up a huge play, potentially game changing. We let them regroup.
Wasting a down, much like wasting a timeout (which we did earlier on a 3rd and a mile) is inexcusable in both these circumstances. Philbin was/is wrong in this instance. I don't really think it's defensible. It is showing who on this board thinks Philbin, and by extension his staff, can do no wrong. -
Other then that, Philbin was very coach like in the presser. He's not going to toss anyone under the bus in a presser. He is probably livid at the pass protection, he is not going to say it to a media member. I like that.cuchulainn likes this. -
I don't have an issue with the spike. Personally I think it's a situation where had we converted on second or third down, it would be a non-issue.
Execution failed us after the 4th and 10 conversion, IMO... particularly poor pass protection and a dropped pass.PhinsRock, Rocky Raccoon, mlb1399 and 2 others like this. -

They have run plays in the past at a quicker pace. Philbin or Sherman had to be telling Tannehill to spike it, why not just tell him to run a play? -

we're in good shape going into the bye...
better believe if there is anything that can be done to improve the offensive line, it will be done
very interesting comment: http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/10/07/3674102/armando-salguero-miami-dolphins.html
I suspect there will be changes in the line-up. after 5 games there are no excuses...
having said that, the options are few. however, something has to be done & the coach is aware of the situation. it all begins in the trenches. without an immediate improvement in pass protection the offense cannot evolve & RT will become damaged goods.DOLPHAN1 likes this. -

I don't see anything wrong with the spike at all. The offensive line, more specifically clabo, got thill sacked on 2nd down. All your angst and frustration should go squarely on that mofo IMO. I'm sure ck has the time for that sack. Certainly didnt feel like thill even got 3 seconds
Edit: according to ck's numbers, that last sack happened in 2.2 seconds!!!
We should just chop block DEs going forward. -
Its not a matter of thinking Philbin and his staff can do no wrong, it really was the right call IMO.PhinsRock likes this. -

As far as the spike, Philbin said on Sirius radio today that they were thinking touchdown there, not field goal. He obviously wanted the extra time, hence the spike. While watching the game I didn't want them to spike it, but I understand his rationale.

Wooooah, you want them to implement the Hurry Up offense. You're moving a little too fast there. :pointlol: -
Pretty sure Brady gets the call to spike the ball there, regroup get a dif package in and run a play.. Hindsight is we lost a down that could have ended in another sack, hurry, int, who knows.. I support the spike and 90% of coaches spike the ball there.. You don't go 40 yds in a tight ball game and rush ur next play, bad things could happen.. Unfortunately bad thing still happened, sacks drops missed fg... Now if we hurried and Ryan throws a pick there everybody would be saying his decision not to spike the ball there and regroup cost us the game.. We lost a down that we wouldn't have done anything with anyways..

And, in a funny coincidence, if we had run a play and not performed it well as is possible when we (as humans) are trying to rush things everyone complaining now would likely also complain that we should have spiked the ball rather than run a play when we were all out sorts after that big play with linemen running 40 yards and all.
Hindsight is always perfect but never real. There were many more plays that directly lead to us losing that game than the spike with 1:01 left in the game. The first possession we had after we tied the game was important, we had momentum and we shat the bed. That was much more pivotal IMO, as it gave them the field position to get a FG if memory serves.PhinsRock, PhinGeneral, brandon27 and 3 others like this. -
Creative sequence there for the Jets.

The spike was because we had no plan or preparation for a huge play there. If coach had a play in his head he's yelling it in Tanny's ear on his way down the field, Tanny tells the players and they run it. Plenty of time left still. -
Exactly. Monroe was not shopped.
"Monroe was not shopped around -- this deal came together between two teams virtually exclusively"

About the last drive, I think we should focus (for the future success) on the fact that, without one magical play by our QB, the rest of the plays were a total failure, between sacks&drops... we couldn't move the ball at all and, if not for RT's talents, the game would have ended on a sack on 4th down on our 10.... I think this is more significant for the future of the team than Hindsight discussions about the spike
and about Philpin, I don't have any problem with him (I can hear his sigh of relief LOL), but maybe we should focus on the similarities with Green Bay? weak pass pro&forgotten running game (or at least this was my perception about the Packers, if I am wrong I apologize)... maybe these things will accompany us for a long time -
