CashInFistForum VeteranOPWhen Phillip Merling blew out his Achilles’ tendon in late July, there was a general assumption he was done for the season.
Apparently, that assumption was wrong.
Merling, the third-year defensive end from Clemson, is telling friends he is about to go back on the 53-man active roster with the Miami Dolphins, a source said. Merling has been walking without the aid of a protective boot for several weeks, and he resumed light running about a month ago.
Merling was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list on Aug. 31. Essentially, that list is similar to the Physically Unable to Perform list, which keeps players out for the first six weeks of the season — provided they have failed their preseason physical – then provides a window of three weeks thereafter for them to return to practice.
That window expires Sunday for Merling, who still faces a felony battery charge stemming from a May 26 incident with his pregnant girlfriend.
Unlike players on the PUP, those on the reserve/NFI list are not paid while sitting out. So the Dolphins essentially saved half of Merling’s $600,000 salary this season.

he wasnt bad either. he was just kinda eh but considering we drafted odrick i think he knows his time is short to prove himself. you never know

Ryan Baker and a some practice squad call ups are not as good as Merling, I will give the man that much, I like Baker but he is not as productive as Merling is on a bad day.
My worry is crossing the streams of "under achieving" with Merling and Clemons, one disappears and is 320 pds, the other could not catch a pillow if it landed in his hands drenched in stickum.

I'm not going to proclaim Merling didn't lay a hand on his girlfriend (though he may not have), he most certainly didn't beat her. If he beat her, she'd have been in the hospital or worse.

He doesn't have to be on the active gameday roster yet, and aside from that, he was in his best shape yet this offseason as I recall.

StrikingForum VeteranRead this story before and it usually ends with the guy re-injuring himself or causing injury to another body part typically due to overcompensating.

But one thing that I find interesting is that I remember Skid Rosenberg saying something on the radio (my old man listens to him) when I was in the truck and he was saying he thinks we overplayed Merling's injury to get some heat off of him so he could get his life etc, straightened out.
Lest we forget Marshall also had the spectre of domestic violence hanging over his head. Under the condition of serious changes I wanna see how this plays out.
