The kid has 17 starts in the NFL and is doing as well as Matt Ryan and better than Joe Flacco at this point in the season with at least 17 fewer starts.

There are Heisman Trophy winners, 1st round draft picks, Pro Bowlers and big money contract guys on this team. I'm still waiting for one of those guys to take over a game.

 

Stat monkey doesn't mention Henne has a bad habit of throwing Int's in bunches he also has a bad habit of moving to fast inside the red zone which leads to FG's which is why even 836 yds of passing in two games has not led to 30 or more points.

That is Henne's weak spot, when he is good he is really good, when bad, he throws dummy picks and holds the ball to long, the hallmark of a young Qb.

The one thing he doesn't do is panic that will see him through, but still, don't try to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

 

Nice to see that Penny is supporting Henne. After all, Penny is only a insurance plan if for some reason they decide to kick Henne to the curb. I think it is very beneficial to have Penny around to play mentor to Henne. In my opinion that is his #1 job for the remaining time he has with the Fins......he could have left the Fins and had the chance to compete for a starting job with another team. Instead, I think he saw a chance to leave his mark even further then he has with the Fins by teaching Henne how to be a successful QB in the NFL.

Lets just hope Henne has been listening and starts to pick up the mental part of the game a little more. I think a few more starts and Henne will progress with his reads a little better. That and he could use a little help with his foot work as well

Gosh, the nerve that Chad's not an All-Pro with every aspect of his game fully developed after 17 games. :shifty: Apparently it's only acceptable for Young to experience growing pains etc.... everyone else needs to begin their careers at the pinnacle of their game.

 

I think Pennington has a bright future as an NFL coach. He is a very smart guy and you guys are lucky to have him as Henne's mentor.

That somehow putting up nearly 800 yards of offense (most of which came through the air) should be completely dismissed?

Especially when it's a very inexperienced QB that's getting that yardage at a time when the usually dominant running game has fallen flat?

It is all about scoring TD's, throw for 1,000 yds and only put up 24 then 14 points and all that will have been accomplished is throwing a bone to the Stat Monkeys.

Color me unimpressed with Henne throwing check down passes when we were down 21 pts, oh sure it pads the stats, but what did it accomplish?

 

Henne will have arrived when he throws passes into the endzone from more than 5 yds away, when the space is squeezed down in the redzone checking down is not really an option.

 

Moving too fast in the red zone? We have more TDs in the red zone (4 passing, 1 rushing) than FGs (2). Even going back to last year, our red zone numbers were great. We don't have a problem in the red zone with Chad Henne.

 

Oh yea, those 9 passes for 51 yds and an INT really padded his stats. :pity:

Henne has thrown 2 TD passes all year that I recall that were into the endzone and not RAC'd into the endzone, the Fasano TD and one to Hartline, when he tried to do so again, that is what led to the Int to end the game vs the Jets.

 

Actually, we're 3 rushing touchdowns off from last year as well (not to mention around 300 rushing yards!). While our red zone numbers this year arent bad, we're just not getting there as often. That's the bigger problem. I don't think that's Hennes fault so much as it is the lack of a run game, but we're still not scoring enough compared to last year at this time.

 

Would dolfans be using "oh, he threw for 249 and 2 TD's and 2 int's" as some sort of great passing game by henne?

Nice rant Todd....I liked it....but, if you only watch one game, this one, then Young's conclusions aren't far off....however, a career (in this case, Henne's) isn't built or judge (well, shouldn't be) on one game....the fact that this was a pivotal game for the standings, the Fins and the fans makes this one a very important loss. However, you're 100% right that it wasn't indicative of his career in total...

 

So a QB has to throw it into the endzone now for it to count as a red zone TD? That's BS. The QB has to decide to throw the pass to a particular WR, and places the ball places that enable him to get yac. We've scored every time we've got in the red zone the past two games except for the last second interception vs the jets. The red zone passing game is not an issue right now.

Our rushing game is indeed slacking, but that still doesn't hurt our red zone numbers. As you said, the problem is we have to get into the red zone more (or at least field goal range), and we've had many drives stall just past the 50 for one reason or another (missed passes, wildcat, interceptions, poor run blocking, penalties).

 

No it wouldn't have been a great passing game because he threw 2 bad INTs. But it'd have been a hell of a lot better game than what he ended up with.

And way to insult anyone who uses stats when making an argument, it really shows that your on your toes as far as debating goes.

 

Henne is here to stay. its nice to know his team mates have his back, but this whole conversation isn't necessary. like Sparano said, only one of his 3 int's was a bad decision on Henne's part. Ninkovich made a good play on the other one, and the last one was brandon marshall's fault.

I am not totally down on Henne, will admit I like Pennington a touch more.

Chad Henne is a typical young qb who is piloting what should be a top 8 SCORING offense, do not talk to me about yds and completition percentage as I recall the dark days of C-Pepe, his completion percentage and yardage looked great, but much of that came via throwing check down passes for easy completions.

If Henne were throwing from the 25 yd line into the endzone and had those numbers I would not say a single word, that will not be happening anytime soon as Henne just is not ready for that type of offense.

 

Padre, when Marshall is double-covered and Hartline isn't open, i'll take those check-down passes for 10 & 11 yards all day long. It was the times Henne wasn't doing the check-downs (with the exception of the pick-6) that caused the first two INTs.

But more importantly, don't feed the negative attitudes on this board. I know you aren't seriously down on Henne or the team. :up:

Pennington isn't "the future" for this team, so his name should really be removed from any conversation.

 

Benching Henne is the worst thing the coaches could do right now.

If every young QB were benched during an average performance, then EVERY young QB who ever played the game would've been benched..... and we'd look like the USFL. Ryan, Flacco, and Sanchez would've all been benched this season.

-Phillip Rivers might have been benched after his 16-13 week 4 loss to Baltimore during his 3rd year in the NFL (his 1st season starting)..... but no, he wasn't benched and SD went on to a 14-2 record.

-Rivers wasn't benched during his 2nd season starting despite losing 3 of his first 4 games, with the 4th being a 30-16 loss to a 4-12 Chiefs team where he completed only 21 of 42 for 211 and 2 INTs (0 TDs) and a rating of 44. He then ended the season on a 10-2 run and an AFC Championship appearance.

 

All I'm asking is to give the kid time to learn. If you look at Ravens or Falcons sites, the posters are very understandable about the short comings of their young QBs. Ryan may be a shade better than Henne at this time with 17 more NFL starts.

The CP of 2008 could give us more wins this year but not a Super Bowl. Odds are that CP's arm is still not 100% anyway.

So we might as well see if Henne can progress enough to become the long term answer.

Give him all the starts this year and see if he can sink or swim.

That this team is having problems on ST has nothing to do with the offense.

Henne is the QB, the general of the offense and he must get this team in the end zone.

 

I can agree with this outside of the ST comment. IMO ST indirectly does affect the offense b/c, if it's giving up points, then it's altering our offensive game plan while allowing defenses to key in on obvious passing situations. Playing from a deficit is much tougher on an offense. For example, if not for the Jets punt block etc, then Henne is likely not forced into a situation where he forces the INT. If not for the 21 points off ST play vs NE, then Chad might not be throwing that 3rd INT and we would've had a MUCH easier time moving the ball on the Pat's defense.
