PS3/Internet Connection Question

What's preventing you from just connecting wireless from the PS3? I ask because you CAN connect via the laptop, share the connection in Internet Connections (Right click the wireless connection and select properties > Sharing). Then you can run ethernet from the laptop to the PS3.... But that's still a wireless connection. You gain nothing by putting your PC in between the router and your PS3 (you actually might make it worse).

Just setup the wireless on the PS3! Forgive me if I'm missing s crucial piece of info.

There is a firewall on my wireless router that blocks any incoming connections that haven't been authorized/approved. I have tried may times in the past with my Wii to get through the firewall but have always failed to do so, so I only assumed that it wouldn't work with my PS3 (which I only got a day ago). But hey maybe it's just something I'm not doing correctly and not because of the firewall?

I will try to set up the wireless on my PS3 when I get home but I ultimately think it's going to be a lost cause. But I appreciate the help and no need to apologize I'm pretty dumb when it comes to hooking up to the internet etc. I could use any help I can get.

So why not just go buy your own wireless router for like $40-50 and then you can connect your ps3, wii, and laptop anytime you want.

Sounds like a NAT issue. Is there a port forwarding option on that router?

From what I am hearing you have a modem/router all-in-one deal?

What type of connection do you have? Cable, DSL, or fiber?

Sort of on the topic, I setup a wireless router at home (we have DSL) and I use my Iphone, and now my Wii and PS3's to connect. There's a security protocol you COULD use, but I'm not savvy enough to figure it out. I actually tried, but my Iphone couldn't detect or get to the point where I enter an ID and PW... Anyway, am I really at risk? Live in regular neighborhood, not condos or apartments... so the houses are fairly spread out. Doubt that anyone outside of my immediate neighbors could connect to it...

WPA is all you need really. As I posted in another thread this week. If you are really paranoid you can use WPA, MAC filtering, and hide your SSID.

Mor is correct. I use my laptop to connect my 360 but that's because I am too damn cheap to buy a WIFI adapter.

I work tech support here for an ISP and I set up routers everyday. I don't mind helping any of my thephins brothers and sisters. I have access to logmein accounts and I don't mind helping anyone setup their network. Just let me know and we can set up a time. :up:

Cable connection.

Are you able to connect to the router wirelessly at all? When you say firewall I am assuming you are able to connect to the router but just can't get out to the internet. If that's the case then it's a port forwarding issue.

I don't understand why you would not be able to connect to router if it is truly a wireless router.

the setting up wasn't the problem, it was my I Phone detecting the network again. I'd get to the screen where you enter the PW and it wouldn't work...

No I can't connect to the router wirelessly at all. The only way I can connect to any internet service on my PS3/Wii is if I use an ethernet cable and hook it up directly.

I use Cablevision as my internet provider, when I originally got my router I was told by the cable guy if I wanted to get another router I would have to pay a seperate monthly fee for the service. Whether he was right or not, I don't know but that's what I was told.

We provide SMC cables modems at my ISP. They are not true routers but they do allow up to 5 MAC addresses to connect. Each device gets it's own public IP address.

We are going to start using new SMC modems next year that have routing capability.

I will try to call the internet provider on Monday and see for sure but that's what I was told originally. I do appreciate all the help in this thread from everyone.

IMO this is a way for the cable company to screw the customer who is not sure of the difference between a router and a modem. Tell them they need another one of what they already gave them and charge them double... :tantrum:

Quick update for everyone who responded in this thread the past few days, I had a friend come over last night and he got my wireless to work with the PS3. He had to edit a few settings or something on both the PS3 and wireless but it's working now.

It really didn't make sense that you could get your laptop on but not the ps3.
