I've been a fan of John Beck since another poster mentioned him last year and I saw some clips of him. Flimsy I know, but the guy just seemed to have it. Arm, head, pretty good mobility/escapability. And the arm- velocity, accuracy, and touch.
I didn't see the end of the game, but to my amazement I read this morning that Beck fumbled his first snap again. What's going on here?
My first thought was the Joe Theissmann comment about Beck being mentally scarred from last year's nightmare. Then I think about the idiocy of Cameron beginning his career against Philly AT Philly and then the Steelers. That's a tough gig.
My qustion is, is Beck's confidence just shot at this point? I still think that he has a heck of a lot of talent and I don't really want to see him get released. I would consider a 4th round pick acceptable for him, yet when I put my bias aside that seems like asking a lot. It kind of makes me sick to see a guy whom I consider to be talented and hard working, with a lot of potential, sinking into a downward spiral. I'm just curious as to other opinions regarding Beck.

To the OP I do think he may be scarred after last season being repeatedly hit. He hasn't shown anything to prove why he should be kept on the roster and at this point I see him gone. -
"Quarterback John Beck entered the contest late in the fourth and fumbled his first snap."

I didn't see it, but that's what I read. -
I think John has issues with mental toughness. He has faith, but he gets too anxious under pressure.
In his head too much instead of just playing and being instinctive.
Damned shame.
As I said awhile back, he doesn;t have mental fortitude and requires coddling before he'll bloom. Sparano is NOT the guy who will do that for him.THCMAN and texasPHINSfan like this. -
Didn't see the play in question, but Beck was charged with a fumble, and Matt Spanos (second-string Center) recovered. Sounds like another bad snap (ala last week's Darilek debacle) if Spanos got to it.

He choked during that game last year (Bengals?) when Parcells was watching him intently from the booth. If I recall correctly Parcells had a look of disgust on his face after that debacle. I don't think, in hindsite, that Beck ever recovered. And maybe the Philly/Steelers games started the whole erosion of confidence, the beginning of the diseases of self doubt and failure taking hold. I hope that Beck gets another shot with another team and gets his head straightened out. I still believe in his talent, just not his head at this point.

im happy with Beck. He's one of the best 3rd/4th string QBs in the league. Why would we cut him?
-
If anything, the fact that Beck appeared in games three and four rather than McCown hints that Beck will be retained as the #3 QB.

Yes, he had a nice TD against the Bengals. But some of his other play in that game was downright painful to watch. There's a pattern- Beck comes in, Beck fumbles, Beck comes in, Beck fumbles, etc.
I didn't see the fumble last night, so I have no specific comments on the nature of it and who caused it. All I know is that he fumbled- again. The bigger picture is what it might say about his confidence or lack thereof. -

Beck has a different center everytime. Last week was not his fault, I did not see this one.
McCown should be gone. -
Please- that's just a weak comparison. Henne doesn't have a track record of fumbling, and much more importantly Henne doesn't seem to be suffering from a major erosion of self confidence.Brown42000 and FiN.in.RI like this. -
I agree with Desides about BP thinking JB "choked". BP wanted him to succeed. Beck just did not convince BP (or anyone else) that he could develop into a legitimate QB in this league.
His problems taking the snap are just indicative of his problems being an NFL QB. And its too bad. JB is a nice man and a good human. I still think we might be able to get a fifth or sixth rounder for him. And at this point, you have to take WHATEVER you can get. -

When you get the second and third team guys in place, there's bound to be mistakes...I didn't see this weeks fumble, but clearly last week's issue was the center. And the local media, last week, jumped all over Beck about that one despite it not being his fault... Probably why you got your thoughts on this post...
Too much is being made about his fumbling. His head has to be swimming right now. Not knowing whether or not he'll be on the team tomorrow, not being given the opportunity to compete by this regime and being largely ignored by the previous regime until they made the decision to put him in without really preparing him, no running game and WR that practically dropped more than they caught...
We don't know if he is 'mentally' ready or not because once again, the regime has failed to prepare him and give him the needed playing time with the guys he'll be on the field with should he get in there this coming season. It's somewhat understandable...afterall, Pennington just dropped into our laps and he's certainly the most qualified guy at the position so that bumped Beck back, but then they decided to give Henne the backup snaps...That's fine, but when you throw Beck into a game situation, again unprepared by the staff, you can't expect him to put out HOF numbers...and you can certainly expect him to have problems...
Beck's current state of mind has got to be pretty mixed up right now. Yours would be too...Dolfan13 likes this. -

How can you tell that Beck has an erosion of confidence? Did he tell you?
More than 3/4 of this board were jumping up and down last year with joy when we got Culpepper, yet he fumbles twice as much as Beck.
I think people just are not happy unless they find a whipping boy, and I guess that will be Beck this year for some of you. -
I wonder what some people will say when Beck's name appears on the final 53-man roster. Will we revert to "I trust Bill Parcells" cliches, or will people start wondering if he's eating some of Ricky's laced brownies? :pity:DennyCrane and gunn34 like this. -

Fact of the matter is that both Beck and McCown are inadequate at the position.
That's why they drafted Henne and picked up Pennington. In a perfect world, both QB's would be cut/traded and a trusted career back-up who doesn't wet his pants in the face of a pash rush would be picked up. But it's not a perfect world, and considering we have the future in Henne, McCown becomes the most logical choice based on veteren experience alone. It's for the 3rd string spot anyway, so its kind of a silly debate (just like the one in which there were some who thought Beck would actually be the starter, ha).
If the Dolphins get to use their third string QB this season, they'll be looking forward to a top ten draft pick yet again. Whoopie, can't wait for that to happen.funkdat, FinSane, SuncoastFinsFan and 1 other person like this. -
I think keeping Beck is the way to go, McCown is what he is, Beck still has room to grow.
Henne has outplayed him, but Beck could still be a very good valuable backup here. -

Talk about beating a dead horse. Can't wait until the final cuts get here to put this topic to rest.

On a side note, unlike some, I don't think going to Baltimore would good for JB, their OL is pretty bad (they sound worse than our OL was last year), which is the reason Boller got hurt. -

The objective is to develop both players, have them compete against each other, and start the better guy down the road. This is why Pennington is a major acquisition: his presence legitimizes that strategy by keeping both guys off the field before they're ready. Between having his throwing motion completely remade and learning a new offensive system with brand new receivers, Beck is practically a second year rookie anyway. I don't know why people are so eager to write him off. Is it the Cameron connection? (Better get rid of Satele and Ginn, too!)FiN.in.RI likes this. -
In not one game last year, not in a preseason game this year, and from the evidence, hardly any practices, has John Beck looked like a potential starting QB. Don't blame me, its not my evaluation, its that of the PROFESSIONALS who run this team.
And no amount of excuse, blaming others, or crocodile tears is going to change the facts about Beck. And thats too bad, because hes a nice kid. :sad:Brown42000 likes this. -
No excuse. Stay after practice and take snaps from whomever the third string center is. Taking a snap is the most basic fundamental a QB has to master. If you can't do that like clockwork, learning and executing the offense is irrelevant.Brown42000 and FiN.in.RI like this.
