Is Ray Donovan an executioner? if so, then yes, Hernandez needs him.

 

Saw it as well, looks like a good show. Need to see the story develop a bit first, but looks good enough to continue watching.

Dexter, at times, can be work.

 

I liked it. Although to be honest I would rather see less of the family stuff and more of his 'fixer' role.

I actually find myself feeling bad for laughing at some of his antics.

 

Disappointed in last night's episode. I'm not sure what it is, but there is something off about this show. Might be the writing, I'm not sure. Voight is great though.

Maybe because there's not really a plot to grip onto at the moment to help carry us along? We're basically just watching character development and a few subplots but that's about it, nothing to actually grip onto. Hopefully things pick up with the FBI agent's involvement.

 

I never said it wasn't. Plus, IMO your emphasis on "character development" is misguided in this series b/c what are we really learning about the characters that we didn't already know through the first 2 episodes?

Lost also had an evident plot from the very first episode. We knew they'd have to throw down Gilligan-style till they could escape the island. Character development is great but it typically can't stand up on its own merit. Still need the meat and potatoes of the show. The 3rd episode of Ray hinted at the plot, and in the 4th I thought they would spend more time opening us up to it, but all they did was repeat the same hint they provided in episode 3- that the FBI agent wants to take down Ray & Co. For some reason they're taking their sweet time getting into the real guts of the show, and if they keep it up they're gonna lose viewers who don't have the attention span to sit through redundant episodes that seem more like filler space than moving the viewer forward.

 

Ray is still moving along at a snail's pace and still using up too much filler space. Bunchy rides in circles on his bicycle--- whup-de-do.
At least it's shifted out of first gear, but still needs to pick up some speed IMO. If the casting job weren't so strong I'd probably be at my wits end ATM.

 

Not sure how I feel about the writing on this show. Still early though, so who knows.

And why exactly is the FBI so pressed for Ray? What exactly is he doing that warrants such attention from the FBI?

 

I don't think the conflict between Ray and the FBI is what really matters. The compelling storyline is between Ray and his father. The FBI is just a small part of that.

 

No kidding. 3 episodes now and we know nothing more than the FBI agent has a hard on for Ray and that Ray finally now is aware of it.

 

IDK, I'm not sure yet. Show needs some type of twist and further character development of Ray & Mickey. They're spending enough time developing all the other darn characters so they might as well include the two most important characters into that smorgasbord as well ya know. I mean- Ray is still Ray, a problem solving tough guy with a bit of a heart & moral compass who hates his father and has marital issues, and dad is still dad- a tactless, self-serving, ex convict who seems like he's still full of as much s*** and agenda today as he was 20 years ago. So far, nothing has evolved with those two characters.

The FBI's involvement offers too many possibilities and room for further development to not become the main plot of season one IMO. Maybe they spin it to where the FBI agent's pursuit of Ray reluctantly brings he and dad together, even if only temporary. I just don't feel the relationship between father & son is enough of a backbone to carry the series, and if the show is all just about character development and sub plots then color me disinterested unfortunately.

 

Show is really starting to come together.

Who has been keeping up? I'm 100% on board with this show, its really excellent IMO. Seemed shallow at first, but they've done a good job building a lot of depth to it. The way they've uncovered the duality between Ray's relationship with his father, and his relationship with his family is amazing.
