This was a guy I actually liked a lot in college. Huge per carry average as a tailback and a better build, more of a true tailback style than fellow speed demon Chris Rainey.
You can't fault Demps for choosing to follow his Olympic dreams temporarily. The dude walked out of the Olympics with a silver medal for his contributions to the mens 4x100 relay team.
This guy is just sitting out there as essentially an undrafted free agent (I actually would have drafted him 7th round personally, to retain his rights).
To me, Demps is a kickoff return man and a tailback.
I realize that with Lamar Miller in addition to Daniel Thomas and Reggie Bush, we have a glut of tailbacks. But what is that thing Jeff Ireland said after selecting Miller in the 4th round? "Don't be afraid to build on your strengths"?
As a kick returner I think he would be the best we have, immediately. I haven't been thoroughly impressed by Lamar Miller's kick returns. Rishard Matthews was our best kick returner against the Bucs and he's so slow that the Dolphins don't even have him listed for that duty on the depth chart if I'm not mistaken, or maybe he's 4th string...something like that.
On offense I think he might be more suited for a hybrid RB/WR role than Lamar Miller. Miller I think is a straight up tailback.
Just remember, there is nothing wrong with having good players at every level of the depth chart. Nothing.

Have him in for a look. That's free.
But since only Champions Practice Here I'm not sure we can sign a guy who didn't win the gold medal.Starry31, MikeHoncho, ToddPhin and 6 others like this. -
I wonder if Miller's style of running isn't better suited to punt return than to kickoff return.

I'd give him a look no doubt. At the least he should be a pretty good return guy. At best he could be a guy we could use in a number of ways. A few carries a game, put him in the slot, end arounds, etc. I'd rather give him a chance than keeping Slaton around I think.
-
Reality is we have a super speed guy who is older than normal, can't stay healthy and hasn't separated himself from the crowd in part because of his injuries. Yet he's in the mix to be kept as an uncommon 6th wide receiver just because his speed might come in handy.
Instead of keeping a 6th wide receiver why not just keep an extra tailback? That position is MUCH more talented and therefore deserving of an extra spot than the wide receiver position, especially if you were to sign a Jeff Demps.Ohio Fanatic likes this. -

Not opposed to signing him , but he may feel he is behind too many similar players here. Watch Thigpen if he is healthy and gets touches and returns , he isn't just a camp body.
-
The one thing is he might not be interested in Miami if he feels there are too many guys he's competing with. You could be right.
But we do offer him the ability to stay in Florida, and here he wouldn't have to compete with Doug Martin/LeGarrette Blount or Maurice Jones-Drew. Reggie Bush is a free agent next year, Daniel Thomas is a disappointment, and I'd be surprised if he personally thought Lamar Miller to be any better a tailback than himself. -
i would only give him a shot if we parted ways with another rb we have. i dont want other positions to suffer at depth when it comes to cutting down to 53
-
he would be in excellent condition

Not a fan of him as a running back. Great speed and nice returner.
-
I haven't given up on him but I have no reason to expect anything from him either. -
He strikes me as a guy who struggles a lot when the blocking isn't perfect. unfortunately that's us.
Some backs can improvise better. Not sure DT is one of them. but I judge this based on a pretty lazy analysis of sucking on a beer as the game is on, and youtube footage of his highlights in college.dolfan32323 likes this. -
If put in the right situation Daniel Thomas can gain yards, just as any player with his combination of size and quickness can. But is he going to make plays? That's a different story. We're not talking about collecting plays that were left to be had out there by the good work of other players. Can he be the one that makes plays?
I think any honest assessment of how often he did that in 2011 would result in questioning whether he can do that consistently in the future. -
To me, the RBs who create best tend to run with a lower center of gravity. DT seems to cary his too high and in a straight forward line. Not a lot of side-to-side cut on a dime feel to him. That's fine when you have a lane, but when you don't...
He's a railroad runner. Can only go on the tracks. -
You have it or you don't, at that position. -

This is a make or break year for Daniel Thomas. With Reggie going into his contract year, he needs to prove to the coaches that he can be a good back in the NFL. That means going out there and making plays. He didn't stand out at all last year, and not to mention being injury riddled as well. He has a lot to prove, but I don't doubt that as the #2 back he will have ample opportunities. If he doesn't produce, get rid of him. No need to waste any more time with him.

He should try nfl, he isn't fast enough for a sprinting career.
-
Geez. That dude is fast as ****.
-
Daniel Thomas did not show that he was a good football player last year. No matter how you want to slice it, he just wasn't any good. Will he be a good football player in future years? Quite possibly. I'm not going to bet on it but I'm not closing the book, either. That's all I'm saying and that's all I've ever said. When you're not currently good then yes you start rolling forward with other plans at the position but that doesn't mean you close the book on anyone. Anyone can surprise. -

Running backs you trade up for in round two are different than say a QB ... easiest transition from college to pro position . While it isn't his fault that Ireland traded up for him , it is up to him to start to produce more consistently , imo. Having expectations of on the field production right now isn't wrong , again imo.

If Thigpen were still hurt then I would think it would be a no-brainer but considering he's still around and battling for a position I think the Dolphins will pass.
The area of concern for them right now is power running. I believe Joe Philbin even said so.ToddPhin likes this. -
If Daniel Thomas literally pulled down his pants and **** on the field and had that stand in place of his production in the Texans, Browns, and Raiders, and a handful of scattered positive plays, the point would still stand. -

My biggest problem with Daniel Thomas is he's a big back that doesn't play like a big back. I'd have no problem with him being slow, etc. if he was the type of guy to always fall forward, and break tackles. Unfortunately, DT would much rather use a juke or spin move than trucking forward. He gets tackled too easily for someone that's over 230 lbs. Hopefully last season had more to do with his injury problems and he can be at least a solid player.
