Because we have a new coach, a new offensive coordinator, and a new defensive coordinator, we have all new systems, and bottom line, from a fans perspective IMO, I feel the right thing to do is to wipe the slate clean of personal feelings of the past, and give our new coach a fair support system so he can get the best out of the players he has and will continue to aquire and mold, I don't want anyone thinking Iam telling them how to root, I just want to implore you to think before you write, think before you call in to a radio station, just think and separate your criticisms and anger of the past and for Ireland, all in the realization that we need to change our culture for the better, because right now, it's not good, I know winning will help, but I wish we could just give this new coach the support to either sink or swim based on his own merits..I guess what I 'am trying to say is that, I feel sometimes that in our criticisms of everything else besides players on our team, it can affect the players sdrive to be their best, and most importantly, their enthusiasm to be a Miami Dolphin.

I need to see how this season plays out and happens with Ireland before I do that.
If this season goes will and he puts importance on the QB position ion the draft, I'll wipe the slate clean.
If he fails to make a real effort for a "first round talent" QB, then I'll wipe the slate clean when he's fired.
I don't think I can be more fair than that. I have stated more than once my full on man crush for Philbin. He was the coach I wanted the whole time and if given a QB he will take us to the promised land. -
if there's not a first round talent available to us then what should he do? the only sure thing right now looks like luck and hoenstly we need help is so many other areas right now to make a rookie qb look good...after the draft ill be better able to say what i think.
the slate would be clean already if ireland were fired too. -
I liked the Garrard signing, but I do not like the "we need new offensive linemen" stuff as we've spent high value resources already on the OL, if they have to change personnel, again, someone is doing a bad job.
Add in the lack of explosive athletes on offense, guy we know can produce, and tbh I'm a little miffed with the job Ireland has done as that tells me "we must develop...." again, we finish dead last in the AFCE I want some heads to roll.texanphinatic likes this. -

Hence the record and the once again "fresh" start.... more than one person was doing a bad job unfortunately. -

Not dissing the new coach , which so obviously is a year late , another bad job , but this team is further away than closer and at this moment I don't see that changing in a very measurable way ay any time soon. -
The real problem, the way I see it, is we have no offensive weapons we can rely on, for example Reggie Bush goes for 1k yds again this year? Brian Hartline discovers his inner Steve Largent? So imo, the offensve could very well be dreadful to start the year..just what we needed.
Ireland really should hope Pruitt or Wallace or Moore, or even better for him, some UDFA, has a monster year. -

Win the division? Probalbly not, Brady is still in NE. -
Yeah, New England is going 14-2 again. we have an impact rookie draft and a better offensive system (and the few studs we have stay healthy) we can win 9 or 10 games with this schedule. I'm predicting 9, just because Moore and Garrard will have some down weeks.

DJ,
Philbin has my full support. But when you mention how bad our culture is, in my opinion, Jeff Ireland is a very real part of that. It's hard to wipe the slate clean when we have a carry over from a failed regime.
But I'm willing to keep the pitchfork in the shed until after the draft. That's the best I can do for you! -
Fair to Joe? No, but Philbin must have understood what he was getting himself in for when he took the job. If there had been a clean sweep of GM and Coach this offseason, then preaching patience would make sense. With Ireland still here that cry now falls on mostly deaf ears.
After the draft, the same old questions will be asked. Do we have a Franchise QB? Is the OL finally rebuilt? Do we have an impact WR/TE? Can our D make a critical stop? Ireland will have had FIVE years to build this team, why is it not fair to expect results this year? -
And a dreadful offense with mismatched pieces for what Philbin wants to do, if he sticks with his Green Bay roots, we really don't have the personnel, Bess and Fasano are not those types of players and we have no idea who replaces Marshall, with points at such a premium..not looking good, toss in the "wrong style of offensive linemen" and this could be a bad year. -

The slate is wiped clean. The only positive is that we've gone full circle around and have an "easy" schedule again as when Sparano was brought in.
That being said, I'm an avid Dolphins fan that reads this board and optimistic. I can't get my hopes up better than a 6-10 team and I like the new coaching staff. I liked Cam Cameron too, so I am dubious now how Phiblin will work out.
It's Super Bowl or bust for me every year. I don't care how bad my team is, that is the only prize to strive for. I don't think I am any less of a fan for thinking that and we're not close enough to get my hopes up. -

How long does he get? -
How many yrs have we went into the season pretty much handing the AFCE to the patsies before the season started?
As for 6-10 it really does depend on whether or not we land a Vet Wr who can produce, or find some Wr who can produce b/c right now the offense looks punchless and rookie Wr rarely produce huge numbers, which is sort of Strike 1 and strike 2, for all of the pollyanna stuff about not needing Marshall anyway we really do need him and no longer have him.
We have draft picks instead, the most useless raw material when it comes to winning immeadiately imaginable -
I believe Philbin needs a chance to see what he can do before we lump him in with the past failures of the past ten + years. It's hard to be patient when fans have not seen a whole lot of progress for so long but he had nothing to do with that.If he can just bring something new to the offense and build on it over the next couple of years it will be progress.

I am willing to take a wait and see approach concerning Philbin as an NFL HC. I am not as confident as some on here that he is the answer for the Dolphins at this most important position, but I am certainly willing to give him the benefit of the doubt right now. Since he has NEVER been a HC at any level, I think that there has to be question marks in regards to how effective he is going to be once he is the main decision maker on game days. The fact is that he was not the Dolphins first choice for the job and he never called the plays for the Packers offense on game days.
I hope for the best for Philbin and this coaching staff, but I have felt this same way for every HC and new coaching staff since Shula was replaced years ago. There have been far more disappointments in the play of the football team over the years since Shula left than there have been joyful moments. While I agree Philbin deserves the chance to prove he was the right selection for the job. The fact is that his honeymoon period will be extremely short unless the Dolphins improve significantly over their records of the three previous years.
Sparano was given almost all the blame for the poor record of the Dolphins over the last three years. The belief by many on this forum is that the Dolphins have the talent to be a success, but it was the coaching staff over the last few years which was the main problem, not the lack of talent on this team. So Philbin will not be given the excuse that there is a shortage of talent if the Dolphins don't have a successful season in 2012. He is expected to take the talent Ireland has given him and turn it into a winner immediately. Because if he doesn't, Ireland will continue to be blamed for the lack of talent on the team and Ross will be blamed for hiring a HC who had no previous heading coaching experience.
Philbin may deserve a clean slate but as long as Ross is still the owner and Ireland is still the GM. It is going to be very difficult for the average Dolphin fan to just forget about what has gone on since Ross became the majority owner of the Dolphins and Ireland became the teams GM. Fair or not, Philbin has to have success immediately and the Dolphins have to finish next season over 500, or fans will continue to stay away from the stadium on game days. -

I think we all, as Fin fans, want to be positive, but there is really only one way to make that happen...start to win...that's up the the new staff and Ireland right now... -

Either he does not know what talent is, or he has failed to acquire needed talent up until now, and keep in mind the Bills have been dreadfuil over that span of time and we've had 8 games with them and still are .500 for that period of time. Sooner or later the fact that the Merlings and Misi's have not come through lands on his resume. -

I'm good with giving grace this year. Wipe the slate clean? Not a chance. Of course, expectations aren't very high with all the new staff. BUT, the next one gone better be Ireland if all goes awry. Get rid of him, the big fat tuna imprint left on this organization and the pitiful cowboy castoffs they collected. Only then, and ONCE AGAIN, can I say I would wipe it from back to front.

C'mon guys ! History is History...... whats happened the last 40 years with this franchise has nothing to do with Joe Philbin and Company. This is not an extension of the Parcells regime just because we kept Ireland around. Sure we're starving for a QB, it doesn't mean Philbin has to throw away his plans, and aquire whatever QB he can right now. Just because Miami has a history of botching 2nd round picks, it doesn't mean they shouldnt take a gamble with one now. There's no arguing with DJ on this.... we as fans play a part. We need to be patient & support the staff. Some posters are talking like they have already dug Philbins grave and are ready to push him in after the first loss! They rag on Ireland like the prior coaching regime wasn't even an issue.
Look at it this way.... Miami has moved on from the Wayne Huizenga era, and new owner Ross has finally found his guys to run the organization. Clean Slate, baby.:hi5:djphinfan likes this. -

I think it comes down to evaluating the talent. Give me JJ Watt over Blaine Gabbert any day. Hell, who would you rather have, Christian Ponder or Pouncey? -
I love that nobody ever answers the "how long does Ireland get" question.
