Part of the leverage they do have is that they can wait until the deadline to get the best possible offer. There's no real reason that they'd need to deal him now.

As for sweetening the pot, given the devaluation of RB's and the whispers that MJD is not what he once was, Ireland would be a fool to panic and sweeten the deal with a 4th.

Again... the problem is the offensive line. If there is a chance of getting a good, or even an adequate replacement for the two people on the right - without breaking the draft bank or the salary cap - go for it! There is not a running back likely available who could effectively run much better than Miller and Brown have been doing. They both have had runs which showed the possibilities, BUT..... this offensive line has not jelled, or is not capable of becoming a cohesive unit because the entire right side seems to have lapsed into complete incompetency - and if a running back is not sure whether he will have a glimpse of the hint of an opening to run toward or whether he will see a wrong colored jersey right in the middle of where the play is supposed to go there is just a mild possibility that he will not be at full speed when he gets the ball, and might have just a bit of hesitancy about direction - or-
when you have to start broken field running to get out of your own backfield the odds of having a successful run are miniscule - and -
when it looks as if the entire defense is converging on the gap you are supposed to run through as soon as you get the ball - the odds decrease.

CK - you are much more adept at finding the facts - but how many times has the running back in our last several games been hit behind the line of scrimmage?

The other reason I don't see a trade for MJD happening is it would be such a non-verbal admission of failure on Jeff Ireland's part. Failure in the 2 RBs he's drafted (Thomas/Miller) and failure in the free agent RB he let walk (Bush).

FWIW, I don't blame Ireland for letting Reggie Bush walk. It's really a shame the offensive line is so bad, as I think nobody would have really noticed Bush's departure all that much if the offensive line wasn't handicapping the running game in such a spectacular fashion. But now it's probably just one more thing Ireland will be judged harshly on by fans and the media, maybe even ownership. Personally, I think RB is not really where he deserves the criticism. It was a shrewd decision (IMHO) to let Bush walk but it's buried by the failure (so far) of the O-line.

Ireland will not, and should not get any heat for letting Reggie Bush go. EVERYONE thought Miller was ready. He may be ready, but the OL is holding the team back.

Maybe Ross won't, but fans / media will, and already have. Even before the season started. But I agree with you that for this one thing, he shouldn't. Fans and even the media so often look at the performances of individual players in a vacuum without accounting for the performance of the rest of the team.

Unfortunately for Ireland, the thing holding the running game back - the OL, is also something he's responsible for.

Any reason why Thigpen doesn't get any carries or screen opportunities. He has seemed to thrive anytime we have gotten the ball in his hands.

I know CK watches UCF, but any other fellow UCF fans have to see the similarities between George O'Leary and our coaching staff in that they just do things to do them. They play favorites, and talent seems to take a back seat to other things that we as fans cannot see. It is quite frustrating.

I also have an inkling that our coaching staff does not use metrics and statistical analysis as much as it is currently being used by other teams in the NFL (in terms of play calling and player evaluation) I get the sense that Sherman has no clue about his own tendencies while other teams have a general idea of Sherman's thought process according to field position, down, yards to go, etc. I mean hell us as fans, without even looking at Sherman's history and tendencies can tell you that if it is 2nd and 10 we are most likely going to run the ball. It also explains why our screen game has been sniffed out so easily by defenses.

Agree to the O Line comment. Letting Bush go was a shock to a lot of us. It wasn't a gimme that Miller was ready. He showed he had potential but with his limited playing time was it really a cert Miller was going to show he can carry the team at RB?

I work here at UCF and have been to many games. I see alot of the same things with Sherman and O'Leary in that regard. Both could be less predictable if they had someone keeping stats for them (if they don't want to learn how).

I am the flattened right side of our O-line...

Sign MJD if you can and let Gillislee walk. His pass protection is at least as good as Thomas'.

Trade for a lineman or scheme like a mofo to allow Tannehill time.

I think Mojo would get a jolt being dealt to a contender in Miami. However, I still think he's lost a step. I think the carries he's taken has finally caught up to him.

I still believe in Lamar Miller.

You're forgetting about Daniel Thomas. He's terrible. He's always been terrible. Miller can't carry the ball every series. He needs a capable backup.

My thoughts about any GM or Coach - if the credit is going to be given the detractions must also be looked at. To deny either or is just plain wrong.

I honestly feel like a lot of the ability to run stems from the Offensive Coordinators commitment to it. That dictates how highly priorotized it is in practice reps, gameplanning, mentality, and even in terms of who you choose to draft and sign to fit the goals of your offensive system. If plays into whether you establish a good running rhythm (ever OLman I have ever seen interviewed has said you need to run a bunch of times to get the engines started and if you run too little or too inconsistently it makes it harder to succeed in the run game thus, you'd surmise your YPC suffers).

I'm curious, how have Sherman's past running attacks looked?

My guess is that they were only successful when he had an OL that could pass protect, a QB and WRs that made the passing game a big threat. And that when that happened, he popped a few big runs per game as the D had to fear the passing game so much.

Here, he has no Pass protection, so an average passing attack. As a result, defenses can still play the run, and squeeze the **** out of us.

Can Sherman adjust? Do we have the personnel to adjust? Either he starts committing to some heavier run philosophy, or pass pro muyst improve to make the deep ball and seam passes more dangerous, drawing the D deeper and opening the run game again.

I believe was head coach during the productive Ahman Green years when he was doing well. Aside from Favre and the WRs, I couldn't tell you much about their line and the type of blocking they used. sorry lol

I thought Miller would have a big year... IF he could be smart enough to learn his assignments. It seems like he is still limited in that regard. I have no total proof, but I think CK or someone noted Ryan has had to line him up and move him a few times.

I don't know who this everyone is you are referring to. I NEVER though that Miller should be the main RB on this team. He is nothing but a change of pace type back in the NFL, not a primary RB. I thought letting Bush leave in free agency was a bad move and I still think it was a terrible move on the part of Ireland. I read many comments on this forum after Bush signed with the Lions that the Dolphins made a mistake in letting him sign elsewhere.

When Miller and Thomas are your #1 and #2 running backs on your roster, it makes perfect sense that the Dolphins are in the market for a RB at this time. Thomas should not even be on the roster. Miller is a very nice straight ahead runner when there is a huge hole to run through. He can't avoid tacklers and he also can't break tackles. He has had two decent runs over the first five games and a lot of negative or very short runs otherwise.

I am a big Hurricane fan, so I saw a lot of Miller when he played at UM. His speed was what made him an effective runner at UM. It was never his ability to run though tacklers or make moves on the defensive players. He would run through gaping holes opened by his offensive line and his speed would give him a chance to turn it into a long run. He still has this speed, but the defensive players in the NFL are much faster than the players Miller played against in college.

If the Dolphins can't trade for a true #1 RB during this season, the RB position is going to be a big area of need during the off season.

if Ireland hasn't been all that good at drafting a olineman then that tells me he sucks as a gm and our running backs are not playmakers as well or they would have been making playes on a regular bassis.

I wished we could trade for Adrian Peterson then we could draft olinemen but Ireland needs to go we need a better talent evaluator .

    Lol.

As of right now we have no true fullback on the roster, anyone know why that is and how that could relate to our poor running game, I mean Adrian freakin Peterson posted a 3.5 average out of single back sets last year, how they hell do we think miller can do the job with this poor oline and no fullback.

Stumbled across this nugget about Vaughn Martin; posted on October 11th:

"The Dolphins will release DT Vaughn Martin (hernia surgery) off injured reserve with an injury settlement once he's 100 percent healthy.
ESPN's Adam Caplan reports Martin should be able to work out for teams later this month or early next month. He signed a two-year, $4 million deal in March." - Adam Caplan on Twitter.

    http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5346/vaughn-martin

Looks like we may some heavy investments on the D-line next offseason even if they bring Soliai and/Starks back. There'd be no interior depth behind those two and Odrick. I'm a fan of Louis Nix, just saying. :shifty:

I'm a bit confused with the signing of a player like Clutts in last second fashion, then cutting him, so I guess it means they decided to make a variation within their scheme, and with the way this oline run blocks, you would think an extra blocker might help the cause..some of it doesn't make sense, some of it does, I remember the coaches admitting that they didn't spend a lot of time on the run game in camp and that they were gonna change that recently..( I'm pretty sure I heard that from coaches)

Anyways, so you believe the coaches are messing this up thus far?
