I think Julio Jones is his upside. He's not there yet, and that's what makes him a risky pick. He could be Julio Jones, but just another athletically talented receiver that doesn't make it in the NFL because he lacks the technical qualities of the position.

 

The receiver position is tough to figure out for the Dolphins. It seems like they really want to resign Hartline which is a move I don't really like. The smart move in my opinion is to try to get Mike Wallace and Greg Jennings. It is certainly not the cheap route but it is affordable given their cap situation and it's a bold move to make them an instant threat in the AFC. There is also the draft where Tavon Austin, Keenan Allen, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Tyler Eifert will be staring the Dolphins in the face at 12.

The Dolphins need to revamp their entire receiver core and to me that means Davone Bess, Armon Binns, Rishard Matthews, etc can all go.

 

Now a cool scenario would be for the Dolphins to extend Hartline, sign Jennings, and draft Tavon Austin. That would be a nice receiving core for Tannehill....

 

I'd much rather give Brian Hartline around $30 million over 6 years than give Mike Wallace $50 million over 5. Mike Wallace is such a poor fit for the offense Miami runs, that he will never live up to his pay if he is paid that much in Miami. Mike Wallace is little more than a vertical threat, and there are simply not a lot of vertical routes run in this offensive style. Most of the routes are going to be timing routes in the 1-10 yard range, and probably around 85% of all the routes will be less than 20 yards.

 

Hard to find too much fault in Russ Lande's logic on this. My last mock 11 was very similar.

I will say this...the idea of the Tennessee Titans taking Dee Milliner so that they can move Jason McCourty (who just signed a $7.4 million per year contract) back to nickel corner is absurd. I think perhaps Lande meant to say they would take Milliner so that they could move VERNER back to nickel corner, because he was the nickel corner back when McCourty and Finnegan were both there.

 

I'm down with that, as long as Tavon goes in the 2nd.

 

It's hard to imagine right now, because he's got so much public acclaim. But if nobody had heard of him and people just started circulating tape on him, having him not go in the 1st round in your mock drafts wouldn't look out of place.

That's what I was going to say. He has the same type of physical ability. The difference is, Jones proved it in college and while Patterson definitely got better as the season went on, it's still a small sample size and the numbers don't necessarily blow you away. The prospect of what Patterson can become is certainly very exciting though. I'm just not sure I see the Dolphins taking a WR in the 1st after giving big money to a FA/traded for WR, which I fully expect to happen and re-signing Hartline. If the FA is Jennings, then I could see it as more of a possibility though.

If he can become a Ginn Jr, then I say run away very fast.

 

I am terrified of picking Patterson. Terr. I. Fied. I feel like at best its a 40/60 boom/bust scenario. However, any player can be a Ginn, so you can't let that be a factor.

 

Ginn while a bust is not a colossal bust because worst case scenario you have an electric return man.

A Troy Williamson, David Terrell, Charles Rogers ....those guys are the bust factor that should be feared more.

If Philbin wants a "football player" Patterson is one. He takes carries from the back field and doesn't shy away from contact. Ginn was a soft guy who went seeking the sidelines.

Patterson will catch in traffic. Ginn got scared when he heard footsteps coming from a safety.

 

Yeah, that's probably spot on. I think he has a better chance to be Jones and he obviously has a bigger frame and won't be as soft as Ginn, but a guy like Patterson is certainly a boom or bust pick and from a production level I think a floor of Ginn could be accurate. Sometimes you need to take those chances though if you want to reap the rewards.

 

DeAndre Hopkins, who is not listed in the mock and may not be a No. 1 pick, is an interesting player. Think he needs to be more aggressive and physical but has a good burst and quickness.

I'm a big big fan of Hopkins and he really should be in the first round but I'm guessing he slips to the second round like Anquan Boldin did for whatever reason.

 

He's not a #1 caliber NFL receiver so IMO teams will hesitate to take him in round 1, especially with the gap between Hopkins and the rest of the 1st/2nd round receivers being so slight. Hakeem Nicks & Kenny Britt were late 1st round picks, and they're in a class above Hopkins. Stephen Hill went 43rd, Titus Young 44th, Alshon Jeffery 45th, Torrey Smith 58th, Golden Tate 60th, Reuben Randle 63rd, and Randall Cobb 64th. IMO that's a more appropriate range for Hopkins.
