Look at this kid. Making adjustments at the line, great ball fakes, using his feet, making accurate throws all over the field.
LOL at everyone saying he was too raw and needed to sit.

The overturned TD throw to Wallace is really his denoument, what I mean by that is Wallace was bracketed and he probably should not have made that throw, BUT, he still almost pulled it off..talent or a poor decision that nearly paid off vs 2nd stringers? -
I don't see it as a bad decision. I see it as him aggressively throwing into the weak spots of the Buccaneers' cover two. He did it several times on the night. One he snuck over top of the corner to Roberto Wallace on that pretty up-and-down pass to the perimeter. Another later in the game he stuck right into the arm pit between corner and safety, much like the end zone play you're talking about but on a more defined and less rushed route and throw.
I'd love to know if Ryan stuck that ball in end zone low to the ground on purpose. If he did, then all hail Ryan Tannehill.eltos_lightfoot likes this. -
I know Roberto Wallace dropped that TD pass, but hot damn that was a great freaking throw. Some people will say it was too low, but I think that was perfect placement. It hit Wallace in the numbers and was thrown to a window where only Wallace could get to.

One of the passes I like the best is actually the screen at 1:54. That's about as well as you can throw a ball like that in terms of getting it to the guy in a hurry and leading him so that you get the most possible YAC on it. If he would've floated that out there or placed it poorly it would've been a loss, with those two defenders in the vicinity. As it was it was a short gain.

I don't know if I really call that a screen. It was the right read given the defense, and the timing and execution were OK, but the ability to execute that play flawlessly is something you do see at the college level a lot.
I liked the play at 4:21 a little better, as far as screens go. This was an actual screen, and there was a jailbreak up the middle with two free rushers right in his face, but he got the ball off with the right accuracy and timing without any panic. You'd be surprised how many young quarterbacks aren't able to do this that well. Andrew Luck also did it perfectly and scored a touchdown on a similar play yesterday, his first pass of his career.
Another play I liked was at 1:40. Even though he still pretty much sucks as a runner, which is mind boggling given his history at slot receiver, there was no hesitation in the decision to scramble here on 2nd & 10. You don't need a homerun play at this down and distance, you just need 5 yards or so to make a decent 3rd down situation. I don't think he felt pressure in the pocket. I don't think that's why he pulled the ball down. Either someone ran a wrong route or he actually decided before the play that the scramble was his second read.
At 3:24 though he scrambled again (and again, instincts suck for that sort of thing) yet he did that clearly because the blocksy twins Jon Martin and Nate Garner let a guy right through the gates. Ryan had his eyes upfield on his drop but right when he planted his foot, he felt that rusher and immediately scrambled up the field. That's pretty good.
All of these (1:40, 3:24, 4:21) strike me as instances where he could have panicked under the rush and it could have affected his execution, resulted in a loss or non-gain. He turned all of them into gains. I liked that.
And aside from that I just really appreciate that he had a knack for squeaking the ball into the holes between cover two zones in way I'm not sure I've ever seen Chad Henne do before. -

I like what I see. He definitely has a long way to go but he made many more good reads than I expected. I didn't question any time he decided to take off and run and his ball placement for the most part was not bad. Here's to hoping.

There's an anti-Tannehill crowd? If it is, I don't remember hearing any "chirping". Still to use a king FUPA phrase, let's put away the anointing oil until he performs well in a regular season game. I'm super excited too, but he's still got plenty to prove. If an anti-Tannehill crowd even exists, I'd say it's way to early to say I told you so.

The one ball that was questionable was the one he threw out to the sidelines that Gaiter looked like he might have been able to jump for a pick-6. Definitely a risky ball to throw, bad decision.
But even that ball had a glimmer of positive because he threw it as far to the outside as possible while still leaving open a chance that Clay can catch it. It was really too far outside for Gaiter to have caught it. Whether that placement was just random coincidence or if he meant to throw it that way, or whether he could reproduce that 9 times out of 10...I don't know. -
As I watched that play it looked to me like THill threw the ball in Clay's direction the only place it really could not be int'd but with not much chance for Clay to catch it either, so imo it was not a horrible play.
Disagree about throwing into double coverage to Wallace in the EZ, granted a good Qb has to make throws into tight windows down there (looking at you Chad Henne) just thought he should have made a different decision if it was there. -
It wasn't really double coverage. The corner had disengaged his coverage because Wallace was out of his zone.

Well, when Tannehill and Gruden sat down they certainly discussed how much Ryan loves to squeeze those sorts of throws in there along the sidelines, believing his arm can get it into that little window past the corner.
In terms of 9/10, I think Ryan's mentality and habit is based on it working 9/10 times in college. It may only work 6/10 in the NFL with one of the other 4 times being an INT. We'll see. -
Well, he looked like he did get the ball up and over the fronting defender and in front of the backside coverage, it was a good pass, and iirc Wallace really was his only option in the EZ..just that stuff is either the arrogance of talent, or just a bad decision.
We'll see soon enough, he'll surely play a qtr this Friday, maybe 2 qtrs, with Devlin coming in the 4th qtr.
The pass to Clay looked like one of those "I'll toss it up there where the only one who can really make a play on the ball is Clay" deals but with Clay being flat along the goal line trailing the ball away from him and the Cb meant there was very little chance anyone could catch that pass. -
Thanks for putting that together Chris. Especially enjoyable since I was unable to see the game. Some good things on tape, but certainly room for improvement. I was impressed with Roberto Wallace, despite some body catches, throughout the video.

No, because I'm not ignorant enough to blame a bad season solely on a rookie QB. and like I said in another thread, very few rookie QBs have ever had a winning season their first season.
