Yeah right! What a clown!Exactly! Yeah, the Saints Doctors seemed to have "allowed" them to sign him, huh? Man, what a Napolian complex that dude has, huh? -Dick Satan-
Great college coach. That I'll give him. He just can't hang with the big boys.:tongue2::pointlol:

It really kills me the amount of people who act like Brees over Culpepper was in any sense an easy decision to make.

I mean...IIRC it did come down to medical. And if its between two QBs...you're gonna take the leg injury over the arm injury. I mean...its not like Pep sucked. It just didn't fall the way we wanted it to. Of all the things Saban can be crucified for......this isn't the one. Its very "Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda."

Our doctors had dropped the ball quite a bit during those years. But what do you want? All FAs are brought in, and one of the biggest issues is being cleared by the medical staff. Their input is important, and they didn't sign off on his shoulder. HIS THROWING SHOULDER. I don't blame Saban for that.
I still applaud him for denying all rumors about the Bama job until our season was over. He handled the team professionally, and gave it 100% attention. Who could give 2 poops about what he said to the media, when they painted him into that corner.
DO NOT CARE ABOUT LYING TO UNSCRUPULOUS SHEISTER REPORTERS.
All you have to do is look at Bobby Petrino. He was squealing that sueeeee-weeeeeee, before the falcon season was over, and the razorback's coach had coached his last game. that is a whole other level of quitting and scumbaggery.#1 fan, hof13, Stitches and 1 other person like this. -

You also can't blame him, I'm not a Saban fan, but what Brees came back from is nothing short of a medical miracle.dolphan117 and Silverphin like this. -

Our team doctors didn't always get it right .Who can forget the missed call on Damion Mc Intosh from the Chargers who was traded for on a cursory glance by the team doctors only to find out later he was useless to the team that first year due to a lingering injury.
There are many more examples.
It just goes to prove that a secondary outside opinions is needed when it comes to injuries. The team doctors are not of the highest qualifications.Sceeto likes this. -
Let's not forget that it cost us a #2 to get Donte while it was "just" money for Brees. What would you rather take a risk on, a mobile QB with a really bum wheel or an accurate/smart QB with a bum shoulder. I've watch enough baseball to see that shoulders can be repaired.
This wasn't supposed to be a "quick fix", and thus even if Brees wasn't available full strength for the beginning of the season, most agreed he would eventually make a full recovery. This was a no-brainer for me at the time and I still feel that way.
Who would you rather have, Mike Vick with a messed up knee (hypothetically), or Chad Pennington coming off arm surgery? Again this is a no-brainer for me.DolfanJake and xphinfanx like this. -

Shoulda, coulda, woulda guys, it's over with. That story has been written, several times in fact. We don't know all the details about what transpired. The Nicktator made his decision and probably doesn't even think about it any longer, so why should we. It turned out to be the wrong decision, but we don't know how it would have turned out had he gone the other way anyways, although, anyone, including the 9 yr old Pop Warner QB would have been a better option at QB than Frerotte, but I digress.
Take a collective sigh and leave it where it is, in the past. If you want to worry about something, worry about what moves are going to be made this year. -
The doctor that did the surgery just said that it was 1 in 100 that Brees comes back from that injury. People had come back from the injury that Culpepper suffered, but the injury Brees suffered pretty much ends careers for people. You would be an idiot to take a person that a doctor told you was pretty much not going to come out of the surgery with the tools that you need to win in the NFL. The saints took that chance, at that point what did they really have to lose? Congrats to them for hitting the jackpot. A great quote to live by "if you can't change fate, change your attitude"

We have to face it, we are the Chicago Cubs of the NFL. -

We ended up with Culpepper for a 2nd round pick and he got to get paid while he rehabbed in Miami. I don't hold Saban at blame for Culpepper over Brees but I feel he had the ultimate call and the final decision regarding Culpepper and Brees. Brees is an All-Pro and Superbowl QB and Culpepper never made it back to the player he was before.

parcells also was looking at brees when he was in dallas but passed on him because of the shoulder. bottom line it was the right call based on risk but brees beat the odds. good for him but it doesnt mean it wasnt the riight decision. besides, you never know how brees career wouldve turned out here. he could just as easily have gotten killed behind our offensive line and reinjured the shoulder and then we would be crying about how it was the wrong choice

we've been to at least 1 superbowl out of every 10. thats better than 90% of the league -

IIRC Brees wanted New Orleans over Miami, they were willing to pay more. Thus we were left with trading a 2nd for C-Pep or ? but Brees was really into going to NO and helping revive the Saints franchise and their city. He has succeded......

I blame Saban. Maybe not for not getting Brees, but for making the double mistake of getting Culpepper.
First off, Culpepper was going to be RELEASED!
But Saban spent a 2nd on him to get him "into the Dolphin camp" early even though his injury would not let him play for a year.
Then Saban started him (because of both of their egos) and then did not put him on IR until the season was almost done. And this was the season that Ronnie Brown was getting 12-16 carries a game.
We could of used that 2nd round pick (the numbers are right) and moved up to get Jay Cutler. -

Wow, sour grapes for a long time.
Do I think Saban was an idiot as an NFL Coach? Yup
Am I still bitter about it? Nope.
It's the past, it's 4+ years removed now. What is the statute of limitations on blaming the sins of past regimes on our current day predicament? I'd say 3 years is enough to forget about past screw ups. You can completely make a team a 100% fresh team in that course of time, at every position, pretty easily. It may not be the best team, but if there were bad decisions made, over the course of 3 years you can correct them, and I think for the most part we have.
What I see here is a lot of sour grapes because we're not in the super bowl, and someone who Nick Saban didn't hire is. Just because Drew Brees went to the SB with the Saints, does not mean that he would have gone to the SB with the Dolphins guys. You have no idea if Henne won't become the next Brees (not saying he will, just saying the possibility is always there), or Manning either, so to be so upset over one player at any position, especially one we've got potential at, is odd.
Augh, I just think it's stupid to build so much animosity towards one guy, 4 years later. It's over, put it to bed. -
With the way our line was 4 yrs ago, plus the fact that both qb's were coming off injuries, in hindsight neither of them would have been a good fit that year. Who's to say that bree's wouldn't have taken a huge hit and hurt his shoulder again, the way Duante did several times. Really, Saban was a jerk off, and a horrible NFL coach, but he made the right decision. He picked the guy with the highest chance of starting.
PS the medical staff that wouldnt sign off on Brees was dumped the very next yr. -
The Cubs on the other hand have only sniffed the big dance twice in that time, but still didnt get to go.
