We've already had our bye week and played 3 of the best defenses in the league out of our 6 games. Those things make a big difference when discussing rankings 7 weeks into the season. That's why I laughed at fans who were excited that we were the number 1 D after the first game of the season.

In summary this stat, at the moment, is pretty useless.

 

Dan henning lol. We outscored every team that has played the jets and steelers two of the best defenses in the league. Explain how that is possiblke if henning is so bad

Ryan Fitzpatrick has better stats than Henne in all categories save total yards despite having fewer attempts per game. He has 11 TDs to Henne's 8, and 4 INTs to Henne's 5. That's despite starting 2 games less than Henne. That's an astounding job of limiting turnovers and scoring points, what with being all careless as opposed to our ball control philosophy. The problem isn't the Bills offense, its their defense. Hell, Ryan Fitzpatrick alone has thrown for more TDs in his 4 games that our entire team, including defense, has scored all season! We're not doing it right on offense, and we'll continue to lose close games unless we change it.

 

I still wonder what amount of which statistics will win you a Superbowl in this league?

 

When you're losing by 30 points in the 4th quarter the other team's defense tends to play off and not rush and not risk their players safety.

Not due to their offense. Since offense is what this thread is about, the fact that they're doing better than we are despite having been saddled with Trent Edwards is nuts. Our problem *is* our offense, especially considering how good our defense has been playing (relatively speaking). Is the Dolphins ST unit horrible? Yes. Has the defense managed to keep it close regardless? Yes. We're 24th in the league in points per game, that's absolutely dreadful.

 

With the Wildcat possibly shelved, it should allow for full development of the QB position since he'll be on the field every snap. Its time to develop an identity based on what Henne can do. That will happen and with it will come the points.

 

Im not saying Dan Henning is not at fault for a lot of it, he is predictable at times and so far outside the box other times he may a well be in la la land. But a good portion of this, as has been mentioned in club level, falls on the running backs and OL's inability to make plays. They tore through an injured GB team last week but now they face a stout defense and they are unable to run the ball. Just like in Minnesota (outside of one Brown 50 yard run) and against Barfalo, and against New York, Brown got lost in the shuffle.

I love Ronnie and Rocky and all they have accomplished but their days as starting NFL backs are done when you fail to be consistent. I look for us to get a running back in this years draft as a high priority. Maybe not in round one but I think we may look for a way to pick up another pick or two and do something with the position that way. RB's can be found as guys like Ahmad Bradshaw (7th round) and Ryan Grant (6th round/NYG practice squad), BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Jamaal Charles, and Frank Gore (3rd round) will attest to. Ireland was there in Dallas when Barber (6th round) was picked late and he was with NE when they picked Curtis Martin in round 3.

I expect Henning to be replaced at seasons end now that Parcells looks to be leaving or stepping in to the background at the very least but I dont think Sparano is the type to throw anyone under the bus. I would hope our QB coach David Lee is high on the list of replacement candidates and Pennington becomes the QB coach. But certainly running back, Left Guard and Center all need to be looked at. We also should look at finding a downfield receiver because neither Marshall, Bess or Hartline are that guy.


As far as Henne goes, I think its getting to the point where you can worry less about his development and more about the crispness of the offense. Its time to take the training wheels off this guy.

 

And yet people still defend Henning because once upon a time he rode the coattails of his defense to a SB. Last night was an absolute laughing stock from a playcalling perspective, and has been most of his tenure here. I am starting to seriously believe Henning is senile. Surely he can't be that clueless can he?

When you look at similar competition, this is what we have:

Jests- Miami scored 23....Bills scored 14

Pats- Miami scored 14..Bills scored 30

Packers- Miami scored 23... Bills scored 7

So, Miami averages 20 points to the Bills 17 when they play the same teams.


Also, teams haven't seen Fitz play much. When the league finds out Fitz's tendencies, his numbers will drop and drop drastically. On top of all that, Fitz has been in the league 6 years. He hasn't played much, but he's smart and he'll play OK. However, he is nowhere near the QB Henne is. Mark my words.

Also, let's look at Henne vs Fitz when they play the same teams.

Henne against the Jests- 60% comp, 363yds, 2TD, 1 INT
Fitz against the Jests- 44% comp, 128yds, 2 TD

Henne against Pats- 74% comp, 305 yds, 2 TD, 3 INT
Fitz against Pats- 71% comp, 247 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT

 

That was more our easy schedule and element of wildcat surprise than anything else in 2008. Sorry but this offense is putrid and until it gets corrected the Fins will be a 3rd place team in this division and watching the Jets and Pats fight it out for Division crown and WC.

what is henne's record when he throws more than 30 times a game? Maybe I'm wrong arent most of Henne's bad games when throws more than 30 times per game? I would buy the conservative argument if Henne had shown that he's ready to put the team on his shoulders and carry them to victory. I dont see it yet. I see flashes of it but he's not there yet. What is a better strategy? To put the game in Henne's hands against arguably the most dangerous defensive coordinator in the game Lebaeu or too put it in the hands of the defense which was largely dominating the Steelers offense. How many times did Henne look confused by the coverage yesterday. Quite a few IMO. Granted he did the right thing and threw it away when he couldnt figure out where to throw but the bottom line was more passing in that game would increase the odds that Henne was going to try to force a throw against arguably the best turnover machine defense in the NFL this year

looking at all of these possessions I see quite a bit of passing and quite a bit of incompletes. where is the conservative play calling? one series out of four?

 

I don't know that I had a problem with play calling on the 1st drive, but I definitely didn't have a problem with the 2nd drive. 3rd and 2 shouldn't have to be a passing down. Nothing wrong with 3 runs given the 3rd down situation there. For the record, I have no problem with Henne throwing 30 times a game (we just need to run it better when he does).

 

thats the frustrating thing about the criticism of Henning. It doesnt take into account the two problems he has to work with. One is a offensive line that cant run block consistently and effectively and two a young QB who is still learning how to play. What that means if you're an offensive coordinator IMO is you cant trust either the passsing game or the running game. The fact that we are moving the ball as well as we are before we get to the red zone is mind boggling to me. To me Henning is a genius for being able to get that type of prodyuction from our offense. I dont know how he does it. He's working with smoke and mirrors and is pulling it off until they get to the red zone. Now considering how good we were in the past two years in the red zone, the playcalling isnt the problem. Its simply we cant dominate physically the way we were able to do in the past two years. We have to try to trick the defenses and thats just infinitely harder in the red zone when the entire field is squeezed and bunched

 

I do. On that 1st drive we ran a passing play with 1 person running a route. That's a waste of a down if I've ever seen one. Just another gem of a playcall by Captain Senility.

 

Notice I said we have to run the ball better (not necessarily more) if we pass 30 times a game. The defense has to respect the run, and given the past few games I'm really not sure teams do. Yea they want to make Henne beat them (rightfully so, since he is young), but aside from a depleted GB we haven't made them pay. We need some youth (and speed) at RB.

 

Just because only one person released (per the announcers) doesn't mean that was what Henning called or expected.

 

Considering this is Dan Henning, one of the worst OC's in the league for 3 years running now, that's exactly what it meant. Never seen an OC call so many blunders. Maybe he'll retire at the end of the year. Doubt it though. Dude's senile, has no clue what the **** he's doing or where the **** he's at. Probably doesn't realize he's the OC for the Dolphins. Poor bastard.
