Personally I'd rather have the person responsible for any area speaking. So if it's a coaching question I want to hear from Philbin. If it was a decision by Hickey I want to hear from Hickey and if it's an MT decision then from him.

If MT started speaking about everything all the time then I'd get used it, and I can understand how Philbin isn't as great a public face.

 

I just cant get over the Mark Sanchez contract. Tannenbaum may be a a good speaker at press conferences, but who gives a **** about fast talkers. Do we want a PR person or a GM? I just want him to make good personnel decisions, and he hasnt redeemed himself in that department yet imo.

 

I've always assumed Rexy was the one that pushed for that Sanchez contract, so you keep your coach happy and lock down his guy. Philbin, I get the feeling now, has no real say in how this team will be built going forward. "Here are your players Joe, WIN."

I don't think Phibin can outcoach anyone, but he might just have a good enough team to break past that 8-8 barrier anyway. That said, I'd be thrilled if he got replaced before this season gets underway.

 

I think the fans have made it clear they are not high on Philbin, his demeanor or abilities as a coach. His press conferences were dull and uninspiring.

Ross did the next best thing he knew to do. Bring in someone who knows more then he does and put him in charge. They don't have to say anything regarding the Suh signing in that Joe Philbin was not at the table. Speaks volumns to me and weather by design or not gives Philbin deniability as to how involved he was in case we end up 8-8 again with Suh and people start calling for heads

Tannenbaum brings a confidence and with it hope we are heading in the right direction. If you energize the fan base you sell tickets and merch

 

I think you are probably correct here regarding Philbin. It seems as if management has said Ok enough is enough. Philbin was not successful with this guy or that and now that's over. After replacing most of the Ireland players - there is no excuse left other then to coach.

Got a feeling Joe has his work cut out for him. As much as I hate it, we will not be much better first year then we were. We may even regress a couple games because of the massive turn over in players. I hope I am wrong, but I doubt it.

 

I think we should wait and see if Tannenbaum is doing pressers after practice every day before we anoint him the face of the franchise.

It's the offseason. I'm not going to read too much into this.

 

Give Tannenbaum a few years, guys. Then revisit how happy you are with him.

So with all that, the only real QBs he had a shot at were Flacco & Wilson. I wonder if we was judged unfairly by Jet fans. Its certainly not unheard of for Jets fans to be quick to judgement or anything.

I disagree with that. The Jets always thought they had the QB position taken care of. Going back to Testaverde, then they had Pennington, then they dumped Penny for Brett Favre, and then they traded up to No. 5 overall to draft Sanchez. I dont think the Jets brass ever felt like they were "stuck" with any of those QBs.

My point is the Jets biggest issue was at the QB spot. Other than that, they had a really good team. Once Favre left, they had nothing and very little options for QB.

 

Personally, I think that is Ross' decision, not any of us... Would it be better for the organization, I suppose so, but Ross has to be the one making that decision...

 

I think what really did him in was trading up to draft Sanchez. That really set back the Jets so much (given the outsized importance of the QB) that I don't think Jets fans are irrational in their overall judgment of Tannenbaum. But you're right that in terms of # of hits vs. overall high-round draft picks, Tannenbaum is not that bad (Vernon Gholston is the only other big miss I think in the 1st round).

 

My point was that the pickings were slim for drafting a QB during Tannenbaum's reign. I also thought I heard he was pressured to draft Sanchez.

 

I think this is a Tannebaum/Hickey fusion to create one good GM.. Hickey may have the scouting skills that Tbaum lacks and Hickey lacks the cache and intelligence that t-baum has..

 

Why did he have to draft Sanchez? They had Favre on the team, and Favre did well the next year with Minnesota. So yes, that's a black mark on Tannenbaum.

 

Well you are saying they had a bad QB because of their draft position. I am saying they had a bad QB because of their bad personnel choices.

No. I'm saying who could they have drafted in that time? There were virtually no good QBs coming out in that time. The only good QB draft was the last one and he had no shot any of them except Wilson. Other than that, what good QB did he have a chance to get besides other than Flacco? You tell me.

 

Yeah, I don't know that history well (not a Jets fan), but I do remember Tannenbaum being high on Sanchez well after it looked like he was a bust. For example:

But if so, its one mistake. Too often fans **** all over and sour on a guy after one mistake. When asked, the average fan, will say of course they don't expect perfection, but then will turn around and want a guy fired who made one mistake.

 

Yeah, I agree with that. It's just his bad luck that the mistake had so much impact.

 

Go count how many players they actually picked in the draft during his tenure. He gave away draft picks like free candy. He set the team up to for a two year shot at the SB and had Mark Sanchez as his QB. He left the team is cap hell.

Woody didn't force him to pick Sanchez. Good Lord. And he certainly didn't force him to extend him with that contract.

 

There's no defending Tannebaum's tenure with the Jets, especially at the end. That being said, I don't view him as incompetent as someone like Ireland. He did have some success, but it ended badly. There's no need to make excuses for him.

I'll take a 2 year AFC Championship run and then take my chances on how he performs after that. As a long suffering Jet fan, you have experienced more joy with Tannebaum at the helm than anything Dolphin fans have experienced in 2+ decades.

Tannenbaum became GM in 2006 and stayed through 2012. Just count the # of 1st round picks during that period:

2006: 2
2007: 1

So, he acquired more than the average number of 1st round picks. I'm actually fine with that strategy if it means you give away lower round picks to get more high quality prospects.

 

At this point, I don't care if we end up in cap hell IF it means we see some playoff success. I'm tired of irrelevancy. You guys might have fallen afterwards but everyone remembers how close you got. There's something to be said about that.

I just dont buy the argument that a GM should get a free pass because there is no sure thing elite QB prospect on the board when his team drafts. You have to take a risk and draft a QB at some point.

He's basically Bill Parcells except believe it or not Parcells actually let Ireland take the wheel (post-2008) because he was very cognizant of the job descriptions, and Ireland was his friend (emphasis on "was").
