Very sad news.
Don Shula was Head Coach of the Dolphins when I started following them in the mid-80s.
The man was an icon, not just for the Miami football franchise, not even just for the NFL, not even just for American sports, but for the country as a whole.
He will be greatly missed and I send my condolences to his family and friends.

I was blessed to watch him during almost all of his career... The Grace of the Lord be with you, Coach!!

Like Rev Rick, I to had the privilege of watching Shula for most of his career. His days in Baltimore were a little before my time, but I was blessed to be able to watch the Don and the perfect 72 season the first year I ever watched football.
Teacher, coach, mentor, leader...Shula was the epitome of what every player craves in a head coach. He touched the lives of so many people; the players he coached over his illustrious career, the fans of Dolphins, the city of Miami and the nation as a whole.
Paul Brown, Curly Lambeau, George Halas, Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi...all legends in their own right; slide over boys THE DON is taking his place at the head of the table now.
Thank you Coach Shula for all of the wonderful memories and for shaping my love of football. You will be sorely missed forever!
Rest in Peace Coach.Tin Indian, RevRick, Bumrush and 1 other person like this. -
Greatest coach to ever coach football IMO. He is the reason we are all still dolphins fans, because we all hope that things will return to the standard he put in place here in South Florida in the 70s. Without him, we are the Lions of the South.

Man, this was just one of those things you knew was going to happen, because no one lives forever, but you could never be ready for. He was immortal...he IS immortal. But he's gone and he's left us poorer without him. I've been a Dolphins fan since I was old enough to understand what football was, a Dolphins fan since first grade, the year of their perfect season. To me, Shula WAS the Dolphins.

I think the best way to honor him this upcoming season is to wear the throwbacks all season, a patch on the jersey and decal on the helmet.

Honestly this reminds me of Al Arbour dying and how it was felt on Long Island.
Same thing. Father of a franchise. The coach others aspire to be. The man others aspire to be. -
God bless Coach
Thank you for the memories and legend that will never die.

Disappointed to hear this news today. RIP to the one and only GOAT when it comes to NFL coaches. What he accomplished and what he stood for had a big impact on the league & of course our beloved franchise; if it wasn't for him who knows if Miami is the sports town it is today & who knows if the Dolphins still exist today. IMO he tops the list of coaches & stands alone as the GOAT, and that's not just because I'm a fan of the team.
Hopefully we're on the right track now as a team, hopefully this QB/coach combo can do the special things that Shula & Marino did. If we get to play some football this year there will certainly be many tributes to him, but it would be great to honor him by bringing the Lombardi trophy back to Miami.Silverphin likes this. -

What a punch in the gut. I was out fishing this weekend and randomly started thinking about Coach Shula, thinking about how he’s still the greatest coach of all time and hoping Belicheat never passes his winningest record.
RIP Coach, and thank you for the best football memories of my life. I’ll never love the NFL as much as I did growing up a fan of your Dolphins. -
