I just don't get it, unless Jonnu is asking for the moon and refusing to play. He's one of the most important parts of our offense. I'd much rather have him than Tyreek.
-
That would be ridiculous. He was arguably the most consistent offensive weapon on the team last year. He’s definitely worth more than his $4.8 million contract - they would be stupid to get rid of him.

I wouldn't trade him but I also wouldn't give him a massive contract he's probably looking for at 30 years old. I know Tua gets everyone paid but I would be hesitant on this one.

Just because he had one good year in his career with Tua doesn't mean he should be a top paid tight end in this league especially at 30 years old. He got a fair contract a year ago. Honor it then take a walk next year.

Unfortunately, that's the nature of the business. Someone has a good year and they expect a new contract. None of us do that at our jobs- have a great year and demand a 2x raise. Yet that's life in the NFL since careers are short. I do get it and I wish him well. Maybe the market will show he's not worth more and he ends up staying. Maybe he gets paid and moves on. Can't fault him at 30 for trying to get one more solid contract before he's retired.
From Miami's side, it's such a tough position. You can't pay everyone and you can't give huge raises every time someone has a good year. Because let's be honest; he had a good season. Not great, not unbelievable...but a good year. I personally wouldn't give him a new contract either, even though he's a key piece of the offense. He is replaceable and will be replaced.Csonka Marino and resnor like this. -
This offense was at it's peak two years ago with a true blocking tight end and a strong running game. Perhaps they are trying to get back to that and Jonnu doesn't exactly fit to be wanting a pay raise.texanphinatic likes this. -
Was the amount Smith allegedly wants been stated?

You know what they say…. Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
Will be interesting if Grier declares himself officially insane here.
Because caving to the demands of veterans that want to tear up a perfectly good contract has failed horribly every single time for this team.
Hard line in the sand. I wouldn’t even pick up the phone to help Jonnu out. I would tell him and his agent he either plays on this contract. You go find yourself a trade (here is the draft compensation we demand) or he can sit his a** on the couch and watch NFL football on TV in 2025.Last edited: Jun 1, 2025resnor likes this. -

This is why Grier is a terrible GM. His few wins in the draft and free agency end up traded away helping other teams. The draft picks and cap space he gets in return is terribly mismanaged and this team stays stuck in rebuild. Good teams / GMs don't trade away their stars.

So the Steelers trade for DK Metcalf to pair him with George Pickens, then trade Pickens away and try to replace him with Gabe Davis and now Jonnu Smith.
I’d like to know what they are smoking in Pittsburgh.texanphinatic likes this. -
I know the Dolphins name those type of players team captains. But a lot of teams try to root that stuff out.Unlucky 13 likes this. -
