Yatil Green didn't make it to his 3rd season.

 

While Dion is looking like a huge bust right now, his ticket is completely punched yet. Yatil Green, John Avery, Jamar Fletcher, Jason Allen, Ted Ginn are in the conversation as well.

Sammie Smith and Billy Milner could get added as well.

 

Umm, no. And it's not really even close.

Off the top of my head, I would say that Yatil Green and Jason Allen are probably the worst first rounders that we have had in the last 20 years or so. You could also make legitimate claims that guys like John Avery and Ted Ginn have all been worse than Jordan as well. It's especially damning because they were drafted to be impact players at skill positions but never materialized. My dark horse pick? Billy Milner, who was drafted to play T for us, but we traded him after he started all of 9 games for us as a rookie. He suffered a neck injury and was never the same.

Jordan is still young enough (he's still only 24) and has enough physical tools that he could amount into something. He has also suffered from some poor decisions (both on the field and off), so I'm not ready to give up on him yet.

 

Hang on, you gotta take into account that Dion Jordan was the NUMBER THREE OVERALL PICK! There's gotta be some kind of sliding scale for performance and pick #.

 

Yea, Sammie Smith should be #1. I can remember games he almost singlehandedly lost due to his fumbles.

Ted Ginn at least had that one game against the Jets where he had two kickoff returns for touchdowns.

Dion Jordan has been disappointing, however there have been good plays no and again.

 

But his career as a Dolphin isn't over yet... I know it seems like a long shot but he might come out and tear it up next season.. Nobody knows for sure how his Dolphins career will finish yet, I've seen stranger things happen.

 

Number three overall in a pretty bad draft.

 

Ted Ginn Jr. was a top 10 draft pick at WR. I'd argue that missing at WR is more painful than missing at DE.

And again on Jordan, he's only played a total of 26 games, including being under-used through most of 2013.

EDIT: And if we are talking about busts among the top 3, you could make an argument for Ronnie Brown, who only made it over 1000 yards once in his Miami career, the same as Karim Abdul-Jabbar. Sammie Smith was mentioned above and is another strong candidate. He "peaked" in 1990 with 831 yards, 3.7 YPC, and had as many fumbles as he did rushing touchdowns.

 

I don't think that Jordan is in the top five yet. He's been poorly used and the coaches haven't given him playing time to prove himself. I think that if he were used differently/better, he'd be considered at least an average player. Philbin and Coyle are extremely stubborn and will let a player rot rather than change things up. Forcing square pegs into round holes for three years now,

 

I entirely blame the coaching staff. Apart from the peds. That's a personal choice.

 

Rick Norton's name is lost in the years but if you are saying "worst ever" you would have to include him. Second overall pick in the 1st round of the 1966 AFL draft. He was also chosen by the Cleveland Browns in the second round, 29th overall. I still remember the talk of him being the second coming of Joe Namath. For the money at that time he signed a big contract to play for Miami. In four years in Miami he had a QB rating of 28.

 

Ronnie Brown was leading the league in yards from scrimmage when his knee blew. I wouldn't put him on that list...injuries muddle.

 

We still traded up for him when we had many needs... Could have just stayed put and drafted Kyle Long...

lets give him one more year playing at the proper weight and position..he will be working out with Wake and Vernon this offseason so I will at least hope someone knows what their doing with this player.

 

I think he deserves to be mentioned. They actually released him. A first round pick that gets released deserves to be a part of the bust discussion.

 

I think Jordan gets minimized for a couple of reasons including the relatively low amount of resources used to acquire him (rookie wage scale lessens bust impact and unlike RGIII, we gave up what we had historically used to acquire guys like Pat White) and the fact that he wasn't drafted to necessarily start. Cameron Wake had one side locked down and Olivier Vernon ended up breaking out into basically Anthony Spencer.

 

I think clearly Chris Chambers is the biggest bust in Miami Dolphins history, maybe even the entire existance of the NFL

Either way I don't think he's in the conversation for biggest bust of all time. Over drafted? Sure. But not a bust.

I was going to say Yatil Green... but catastrophic injuries kind of make it less of a bust to me because we aren't sure how well he may have played. It's partially bad luck and partially bad risk assessment by the F.O. if there's an injury history (there was with Yatil IIRC).

The worst bust is one who comes in with VERY high expectations and has very few excuses for DRASTICALLY underperforming those expectations.

I mean, you can say Dion has underperformed partially due to his own work ethic or lack of ability to learn quickly (which some claim is the case), but may be mitigated by misuse by the staff (having him gain a bunch of weight to play DE then having him cover the best WR in the NFL).

how much of the blame for a bust is put on the coaches, versus the player, versus the Front Office? To me, a bust is a guy who did not live up to his potential because of his OWN shortcomings, not because of other people's.

Dion is not our worst bust yet.

 

Did Yatil Green even play a down? Dion Jordan is a bust, no doubt, but at least he's had some impact and made a few plays.

 

How can you say hes the worst when hes not even finished out his rookie contract? What if he has 15 sacks this year....would be still be a bust? Someone doesnt become a Bust, until you know....hes not even with the team anymore

 

He is not a bust yet. He can still turn it around.

 

I am willing to give him one more season to prove he can be the player he was selected to be.

If he can't become a starter next year and he continues to play at the level he has the past two years, he would have to be considered the biggest bust in Dolphin history. Simply because of where he was selected in the draft and what the expectations were for him when he was drafted.

All the other players mentioned on this thread certainly had very limited success with the Dolphins. Yet it did not cost the Dolphins a second round selection, along with their own pick in the first round to trade up and select any of these other so called bust.

 

I don't believe Jordan is a bust yet, a disappointment so far, but not a bust yet. I am sure there must be a pretty significant list of players in the NFL who were initial disappointments but eventually came around.

 

Wasn't Yatil Green's problem wasn't talent, but because injuries did him in?

I'm going with Jamar Fletcher because we took him instead of Brees and I don't recall him contributing anything. I don't care if I'm wrong. We took him over Brees.

Most folks here have no knowledge of Norton, because they were still not yet even a tiny sperm swimming around in their daddy's nut sack when he was playing... :shifty:

 

Ginn was actually traded, not actually released.

 

Jordan's well on his way to being in this discussion.

And if he continues down this path and is released then I don't see how anyone can argue that he's not at the very least top 3. He would certainly jump Yatil Green, who was picked 15th

 

Ted Ginn shouldn't even be considered a bust. He wasn't a good player and was a reach of epic proportions, but at #9 overrall he wasn't a relative disaster to be considered a bust. The circumstances surrounding the pick are what most will remember, however.

 

Ginn was over drafted but a guy that has like a 10 plus year career in the NFL isn't a bust, bust's can't play. If we had taken Ginn with a 4th round pick he'd beconsidered a nice draft pick. I don't think its fair to say Yatil Green was the biggest, I mean didn't he blow out his knee in practice and never recover? I would go with Sammie Smith probably, I mean what a terrible player. John Avery I dont think has been mentioned and good god that was a ****ty pick.
