Much like the other threads that are going around to pick "this artist" versus "that artist" I bring you..
Soundgarden or Alice In Chains.. or.. The Melvins
I love all three bands but AIC is way too depressing music. Even for me. I get the fact that Layne was in pain from using so much heroin all the time but it was always the subject matter.
I haven't heard too much of The Melvins. Just the "Stoner Witch" album and "Houdini". But they were both incredibly heavy.
So this goes to Soundgarden for me. Who were really more pioneers to the whole grunge thing than nirvana were.. nirvana just got noticed first.

His solo stuff is good, you heard that?
Boggy Depot and Degradation Trip. -
I saw him open for Metallica when he put that first album out ('98). Was ok. I remember sitting there saying it was kinda like drinking Bud Light. The album underwhelmed me. Days Of The New was also on that show. Liked them much better.
Also saw Soundgarden's last tour in '96. Good show. Rage Against The Machine played before them. Metallica after. -

If that song doesn't convince you that you need to hear the double disc now I don't know what will.

I caught that tour at Coral Sky, you are right, Cantrell underperformed but I figured it was their first gig live sooo Days of the New sounded just like the album.. crisp, nice harmonies... very surprised at Lunatic on the grass from Cantrell but he played Would so I was happy
I voted Chains -
Badmotorfinger is a bad mofo album. ;) It's awesome. I freakin' love the song Rusty Cage. That tune makes you want to run through a wall or something. :D I love it!

Alice in Chains, Soundgarden was fine, but Dirt was the go to album for a long time.

i voted aic although i love all three bands. had the pleasure of seeing all three live and i just loved aic's flexibility from a music standpoint..they could play something very heavy then turn around and make a country song sound great.it's a shame their carreer was cut so short as i really felt they wee just starting to find themselfs as a pioneering band who had so much more to offer a wider variety of fans.
i didn't really care for cornell's solo stuff as it was too "happy pretty flowers" to me.
a coincidence of bringing up nirvana and the melvins as they played quite a bit together much like mother love bone. check out the melvins guitarist on nirvana's unplugged.anlgp likes this. -
i loved both bands.
but i just couldnt stand audioslave. -
Kurt also did used to be a roadie for the melvins and I think they were a large influence on him.m ino likes this. -

He closed with Dark Side of the Moon, which kind of sums it up IMO. I was never a big Floyd fan though.
Days of the New was great. What's crazy is that they were only like 18 years old. -

Nah I like some songs. They're just not my taste overall.
I guess what I mean is, I was hoping for more rock from Cantrell that evening. It just lacked punch. Days of the New was great that day. Travis Meeks looked like Kurt Cobain reincarnated up there. He had that 'it' factor. And that's what Cantrell had to follow. It was a letdown. -
I always thought it was called that, since those are the lyrics. -
Alice In Chains

Staley and Cantrell could harmonized like no one else. I loved everything that they recorded including Sap and Jar of Flies. Alice in Chains wins this one...hands down.

yea ok i remember know. the same pat smear that also played with the foo fighters early on.anlgp likes this. -
You know they are playing Soundgarden and Nirvana on my classic rock station. I wonder how many people feel old after hearing that.

Soundgarden, AIC was great and all but I'm still Full On Kevin's Mom.

2. Pat Smear was in the Germs, not the Melvins. He went on to join Foo Fighters.
3. The Kirkwood brothers were in the Meat Puppets.
4. Drugs make music sound better.
5. Jar of Flies is a horrible record. Dirt = Bacon-wrapped filet mignon; Jar of Flies = Big Buford. Sorry, but those songs are terrible.
6. Man in the Box is one cool-*** record.
7. I voted Soundgarden. The first 5 songs on Badmotorfinger are killer. Louder Than Love kicked me in the head when I first heard it. Superunknown coulda used some editing, but it rocks hard and is weird enough to stay interesting.
8. Both bands kicked *** live.adamprez2003 likes this. -

Thats a tough question... I voted Soundgarden though. I like them both though. Soundgarden i think I enjoy a bit more, simply because its something I can listen to at anytime, Alice in Chains on the other hand, its a bit darker and if i'm in a good mood, i don't really feel like listening to them. Both great bands though. I miss those days...

I'm old school. Man in the Box was released as a single. The term "record" means "single". The Grammys give out an award called "Record of the Year". It goes to the best recording of a single song. "Album of the Year" goes to the best long-playing phonorecord. "Song of the Year" goes to the best musical compositon.
I'm right. You are wrong. But I forgive you. -
