Since we're stuck with TBomb it's going to be someone like Gase. So expect more of the same "on the job training" candidates.
-
He'd be my top choice...so yes.
His track record is great. Tebow won games, Peyton's offenses led the League while doing a variety of things, and the Cutler reclamation is going better than I ever thought it could. This Bears team/offense had no business winning 6-7 games, especially given how injured they were on offense. His reputation with QBs is very strong, of course, but I thought his scheme in Chicago was pretty creative too. Those Denver offenses were fantastic and flexible. It's also worth noting that there are worse people to learn the ropes from than John Fox. In interviews he seems very intelligent, respectful of his players, and he has an engaging level of charisma. I like his attitude a lot, real determined. IIRC, his name was floating around the HC topic after last season as well; Denver players were talking him up as the 2014 season was ending, saying he was HC material. Young, relates to players, and apparently he's got a super smart football mind.
He seems like a rising star to me...which is why I'm not getting my hopes up. I can't talk myself into the idea of Miami being an attractive job. -
We could do so much worse. I'd rather have him over Kelly or even Hue Jackson. Only Mike Shula or John Harbaugh (if he came available) would definitively be above Gase on my list. Even someone like Cowher I would question as much since he's been away from the game for so long.

I would like it even though he's on the young side. I wonder what should we expect from him. Like if Tannehill doesn't make that step forward would we move on with Gase only or give it another year with him and Tanny or drop both.
-
Not entirely opposed, but due to his age, signing Gase would mean relinquishing the opportunity to pull in better staff. No established or reputable coordinator/positions coach/assistant yearns to work for a 37 year old, first-time head coach. It's career suicide.
Give me Mike Shanahan as HC, Ken Whisenhunt as OC, Jim Tomsula as DC, and let Dan Campbell stay as the assistant HC. I want an experienced, chip-on-the-shoulder staff with a fire and brimstone mentality. No more of this first-time head coach, shot in the dark, boom or bust nonsense.Puka-head, adamprez2003, GreysonWinfield and 1 other person like this. -
This is Joe Philbin all over again.
Consider his background:
Denver - News flash - Peyton Manning and his high powered offense makes everyone look brilliant.
Chicago - Definitely made an improvement in Cutler. Cutler is sporadic and his performance varies from year to year. The cupboard was definitely stocked offensively speaking in Chicago. Cutler (a pro bowler), Forte, Bennett, Jeffrey is a nice situation to walk into.
Here is the brass tax, Gase has been an offensive coordinator for two years, and both years, he worked with a pro bowl QB. His general lack of experience as on offensive coordinator should be a red flag. Also the fact that he walked into favorable situations where most coordinators would succeed should be viewed as a red flag. I think we need to be looking for guys who have taken average players (with a focus on QB) and lifted them or a good player who became a great player.
Guys, remember Philbin. Just because he was Rodger's offensive coordinator, it did not make him a great head coach.
Trust me, there are better options.gunn34 and thetylernator like this. -

I don't see the resume here? What has he done to warrant?
And a John Fox disciple? Eh...

Also, he's worked under numerous coaches, so he's been exposed to many different styles and concepts, like Saban, Fox, Martz, Mariucci, etc.
His philosophy is to take what your players do and build the plan around that....which is refreshing.
I'm not saying he's my top choice, but he's meeting the criteria:
_ Exceed expectations relative to talent level by adapting system to that talent
_ No off field issues
_ Well rounded coaching history
_ Develops players
The guys that tick off those marks for me right now are Gase, Jackson & Shula. Those are my top 3, not necessarily in that order.Puka-head, ILDolPhan and finfansince72 like this. -
Working with Tim Tebow isn't exactly a positive mark.
Knocked ole Kelly out of your top 3 huh?

Manning brought his offense from Indy, Gase was really an assistant OC with Manning, he wasn't the OC when Tebow was there, and Cutler is marginally better than he's been the past 2 years, he went from high 80's to low 90's.
Again, I don't know what kind of HC he'd be, but basing it on what these QBs have done isn't a good measuring stick. -
Does anyone have hope in Tannenbaum? All we have to hope for is blind luck.
This decade may end up worse than the 00s' output of 1 playoff win, 3 playoff appearances, 2 division titles, 6 winning seasons. So far its 0's all across the board in the 2010s.
Not much time left...its already 2016 and there are a ton of holes to fill, still have Quarterback questions, and Tannenbaum is supposed to fix it all? Yikes. There's always hope for the 2020's to be better...gunn34 likes this. -

I seriously cannot figure out why Gase would be high on anyone's wish list. The guy has been an OC for two years.
Honestly, think about this scenario. If I made a post saying we should sign a mystery candidate, and I said that these were his qualifications:
2 years experience as an OC
37 years old
has never been a head coach
current offense - 22nd in points per game, 23rd in passing yards, 12th in rushing yards
Would anyone suggest hiring this guy? Does this honestly look like the resume of a genius? This is a classic example of people just repeating what they have heard on ESPN. Look at every "genius" protege that worked under Belichick. Every time they didn't have the best QB in the game, they were no longer a genius.
Trust me, Gase is a terrible, terrible idea. -
I prefer Hue Jsckson. He was a solid head coach with a dysfutional Raiders organization. He had done wonders with Dalton this year and I think he is probably one of the top coordinator in the NFL, who is also qualified to be an NFL head coach.

He's been Riding Peyton Manning's jock his whole coaching career. But then again, he did improve Jay Cutler. Not sure how I feel about this
-
Young guy, but keep in mind his father-in-law is Joe Vitt. Long time assistant coach that could help advise on building a staff, etc. Defensive coordinator would be an important hire. -
The Fins are in no position to hire a guy like Gase. People forget Head coaches are more about management and less about actual coaching. Our culture stinks. I don't have to remind members of this board on the state of this roster. I don't want a guy as inexperienced as Gase seeing this through. Especially with the amount of those changes are about to come on defense. There's a reason they say the GM and coach need to be attached at the hip. I don't see that happening.
Now to be fair, I think we could do a lot worse than a Gase hire. A lot worse. But i don't think he is the right hire at this point for this franchise.texanphinatic likes this. -

I hate to drop the bomb, but head coaches with long successful resumes as well as gas in the tank don't fall from the sky. Any time you hire a new coach this is the type of potential hire you are looking at. Experience is great, but every great coach has a first team and a first game, a first season. Experience shouldn't be the deciding factor.
I'd be fine with Gase, I'd be fine with Campbell if we had top notch OC/DC. Aside from that currently not much out there really has feelings from me.Silverphin likes this.
