Though owner Stephen Ross loves Tony Dungy and gave thought to hiring a football czar who would oversee over his GM, he knew luring Dungy wasn’t realistic, and he decided not to give Carl Peterson the job, even though a friend said Peterson would be interested.
“I have not had any conversation with the Dolphins about a position with their organization, nor do I intend to do so,” Dungy said this week. “…I have retired from the NFL and will not be returning in any capacity.”
So instead of a football czar choosing a GM, Ross is doing it himself, and as of early afternoon Friday, had candidates remaining from only losing franchises (his own, Tennessee, Tampa Bay), with four candidates having declined interviews and a fifth (Ray Farmer) declining a follow-up interview. And so it goes.
But internal candidate Brian Gaine is respected around the league, and his chances increase at least somewhat with Farmer's decision not to pursue the job further. If Lake Dawson gets the job, Peterson's influence would again be apparent; he drafted Dawson and thinks highly of him.

At this point, I'd seriously consider taking the guy who is prepared for a flood:
Over the guy who can sleep standing up:
-
At what point, does he start to rethink things!?! It's pretty clear that a lot of the top GM candidates aren't interested in the job because of the structure he's put in place.
I'm starting to think the biggest problem with this team is our clueless owner.Aquafin likes this. -
In order to save face Ross can't offer the job to Gaine. But he will give him a fat raise.
I could be wrong though Ross is still ****ed up enough to just give it to Gaine.
I just don't think he will because it will appear we settled and Ross won't go there...I think -
Well, it was worth a try and bringing in Dungy would have brought in respectability in the organization. I think we still need to bring in Jason and Zach in at some capacity.

right now I rather have Lamar Thomas running this team then MR Ross and Lamar was a clown so that tells you how far we have fallen.
people were dog cussing Dave Wannstedt and all he did was win games and his players did off the field charity work while Philbin's players go to golf courses and hunch on the women and embarrass this franchise . -
It's a shame Ross has such such allegiance to his replaceable contract negotiator/capologist b/c firing her would be a great good-faith gesture to lure in the best remaining GM candidates by showing he's serious about not getting in their way and to squash the concerns about any potential conflict of power. From there the new GM should be able to fire Philbin & Gaine if he so desires.
I'd like to know if Ross even asked the candidates who rejected us what it would take to hire them, and if so, what their answers were. Armando, Omar, I know you read our forum to help write your columns, so can you at least do us a solid and find these answers out? Thx in advance. -
Firing her isn't really necessary, IMO. It's the lack of clarity and potential for problems that has these guys scared.ToddPhin likes this. -

IMO the problem is, regardless of what's written on paper or is promised during interviews, GM candidates have to worry in the back of their mind about Ross being influenced by Aponte & Peterson which he has a track record of doing so and which might serve to undermine the GM. -

Seriously, pay Marino to drink all day and draft quarterbacks only and I'm happy. I don't care who we draft or sign. Unless Tannehill makes that jump, we're not about to win a Super Bowl. If he makes that jump, we can probably win with what we have.

Not saying I agree, but at least this is a solid post.ToddPhin likes this. -
From a potential GM's perspective the Dolphins have a decent amount of talent, a young roster, plenty of cap space, a solid QB young, all of their draft picks, one game out of the playoffs, you have to come in wondering why the last GM was fired in the first place. And if the same thing might happen to you.P h i N s A N i T y and ToddPhin like this. -
By telling candidates during the interview process that they won't have to worry about Aponte [like you mentioned in your prior post], it only reaches those specific candidates. By firing her it reaches the entire NFL and could open a few doors that previously weren't open or had recently been closed. -
"I think the Dolphins are broken and they need a highly public solution in order to fix the situation. Half of the problem is perception based but perceptions have a way of becoming reality especially when you're being turned down left and right by qualified people based on those perceptions." (CKParrot, 1-24-14)
What would the perception be if we signed Caserio from New England? He has been with N.E. for a while and the personnel guy since 08, wouldn't that help our perception if he left New England (which is a great organization) to come to Miami, even with Aponte there? -

WTF is everyone worried about? A guy coming in and picking 7 rookies. WTF have the Yahoo fantasy auto draft do it? Bunch of effin cry babies. We need leadership on the team and that starts with Philbin and the players not the GM.
