As they chase a playoff berth, the Dolphins also hope to use the second half of the season to gain insight on assorted issues, beyond observing Ryan Tannehill’s growth. Assessing several at the midway point:
Jordan, who has 10 hurries and one sack in 111 pass rushing opportunities (but none Thursday), said coaches want to see him play effectively against the run before they give him more playing time: “I have work to do with that.”

Who stays if the Dolphins stumble down the stretch?
This will be a decision for owner Stephen Ross only if Miami flops. And even then, associates expect him to stand by coach Joe Philbin. One friend of Ross reiterated that the owner loves Philbin, and the people who have Ross’ ear like Philbin, too.
But not everyone is impressed. One NFL front office official said people are still waiting for Philbin to come up with something creative, some solution that genuinely makes a meaningful difference.
A prominent network analyst who asked not to be named reminded me that Philbin isn’t the quarterback/offensive guru that some people thought they were getting.
“His background was an offensive line coach – that’s his expertise,” the analyst said. Just like Tony Sparano’s. And Miami’s line remains among the NFL’s worst in pass protection.
Players respect Philbin’s organizational skills and appreciate that he didn’t rip into them during the losing streak. He hasn’t lost the locker-room by any means. But he hardly inspires passion and hasn't corrected the Dolphins’ shortcomings.
“Players loved or hated Sparano,” said a close associate of several Dolphins. “With Philbin, it’s ‘eh.’ Just a guy.”

I know this coaching staff doesn't really believe in the fullback position, but if keeping a short yardage specialist helps convert 3rd and short and increases that success rate by 50%, it's worth it IMO. you just have to make sure he plays special teams

Some things in that article are pretty damning for both players and coaches alike. Some of it flat out scares me.Aquafin and NolesNPhinsFan like this. -

I thought it interesting how much support there is from the owner and those around him for Joe Philbin.
-
My biggest concern moving forward is that I have no confidence that Ross or the people he listens to gave any idea what makes a good head coach. Even Carl Petersen whiffed in his chances after Marty Schottenheimer left. I'm just not sure the owner of thus team knows what the direction of this franchise isAquafin likes this. -

Dion isn't going to learn to play the run until you give him the snaps, this coaching staff is afraid of its own shadow. And they are piss-poor at developing talent IMVHO. Agree Philbin is Caspar Milktoast and not the offensive guru we expected. Frankly Sherman is showing next to no offensive innovation and I think teams know what's coming on half our offensive snaps.
As much as it kills me, I believe we have no choice but to take an OT in the first round come April's draft. And likely a guard either in round 3-4 or FA. Most importantly we need to replace our OL Coach with a real one IMO.Aquafin likes this. -
Jordan has looked promising, but he isn't playing like Wake did that first year. Him getting limited snaps isn't any sort of terrible abuse, and I don't think you can say he's playing better than Olivier Vernon right now either.

Personally I think it would be a mistake not to clean house .We would be repeating the same mistake as when Ireland was retained thus limiting the HC options .
If Ireland is replaced I am sure any new GM worth his salt would like to chose his own HC.
If we dont do that we would be limiting our options at GM to yet another first time GM.
We dont need the Dolphins to be the on the job training ground for rookie HCs or GMs .It hasnt worked before. -
I starting to think we settled for joe... After Peyton and fisher turned us down we went after joe and Flynn.. Joe helped us on the Flynn non signing, thank god for that.. But I'm pretty sure joe was at the bottom of our hc list.. We had a shot at fisher and he opted for the rams.. What's that say about us? Joe was jes happy to be given a shot I'm sure.. I truly believe Ireland failed us in the fisher/Peyton deal.. Both knew he was gonna make some mistakes putting weapons around them and they wouldn't be successful.. Peyton would be outa the league behind this line... One thing you can say about tann is he's tough.. He might not have the mental make up of an elite qb but he has the body.. Ross has to say he has joes back, nobody else will come here until we make some changes with player evaluating and development..

I just worried that he'll let his personal feelings about him (he really likes him, according to the article) get in the way of objectively assessing both this season and the future of this franchise.

Jordan played 24 snaps, overwhelmingly in obvious passing situations. -
-
Jordan has 110 pass rush snaps on the year, and he has 14 total pressures in those snaps. It's a small sample size, but he's the 2nd most effective rusher on the Dolphins team. Vernon has 28 pressures in 269 pass rush attempts. Derrick Shelby has 9 pressures in 119 pass rush snaps.

My view on this coaching staff right now is that they are not doing a very good job of "stemming the tide" so to speak when things start unraveling during a game. The Bengals win I attribute more to the players not quitting rather than anything the coaching staff did.
As I said in another thread, It takes this staff too long to make an adjustment. For example, using Will Yeatman as a tight end in the Bengals game. It worked well, but Dion Sims has been overmatched in pass pro all year. Why did you not try it earlier?
I also think the players hear Joe say some things and then do another. For example, he explains that he is not playing Dion Jordan because he wants him to improve in run defense, but he keeps giving Sims snaps when he needs to improve his pass protection. Players sense these things. -
Maybe cleaning house, as CT said, might be the way to go. But if that happens, I really would like a Cowher or Gruden, nothing less. I am honestly OKAY with Ireland, and he has shown his semper flexibilis in working with Philbin. The guy put together pieces that were absolutely integral to Miami's potent running attack several years back. One cannot foresee injuries (as with Ronnie Brown who was statistically leading the league in most major running back categories), or injuries to the O-line, etc.
BRANDON friggin' MARSHALL was brought in. Karlos Dansby was signed; who last year, many, including myself, wanted his contract for someone younger. It is not Ireland's fault for players not producing here, only to become solid starters on other teams. He took a shot at Pennington, whose leadership I sorely miss.
If players cannot flourish here, rather than just being a piece, I believe the blame falls squarely on the coaching staff. Ireland has put some damned good pieces on the board. He doesn't make the choice to succumb to veritable windmill attacks.
While I do somewhat defend Ireland, he has drafted some duds. Who doesn't? And whose fault is to blame for those players who do not pan out? -
Its not even comparable how Sims needs to improve in pass protection as Dion needs to set the edge and play the run better. Dion is awful at playing the run right now. -

so what is the chances that we end up 7-9 or worse ? if Miami ends up 9-7 and miss the playoffs does this mean status quo ?
when was the last time our oline was real good , because I am trying to remember ?
I think that Crunch is right we need to get it right and just rebuild now or we will be bad for the next 5 years. -
I'd like to point out this part again:
Considering all the lies from the media last year and this year so far, I'm not sure why we are taking any of this as gospel. -
I do tend agree with some guys not working extra hard during the week, that shows on the field.
To me, that falls on Philbin and Ireland and the conditioning staff.
Otherwise, Meh, most of that is B$ opinion.
As for Jon Martin, nice knowing you, good luck where ever you may wind up b/c I don't want your weak *** on my Roster, he mentally is weak in a sport where that will get you eaten alive.Nappy Roots likes this. -
I read some of the comments questioning Martin in his story and showing fierce loyality to guys like Incognito. I am torn on this. I went through bully behavior as a young person and it is a lot more subtle than many of you define it to be. Of course some of it is blatant, with physical acts, especially when folks are younger. But as bullies grow up to be adults they often resort to actions that are more threatening in non-physical manners. The use of power, politics, and threats to love ones take over for pulling up underwear, pulling ear lobes, hitting blind spots etc. Some of you who have no idea about that culture speak as though you know. But you really don't. And I really don't care if it goes on everywhere as a reason for excusing it. So. That doesn't excuse it. I hope through all this grown adults become more professional and leadership becomes more aware of what is going on. Philbin can not plead ignorance here. And grown adults will have to go through some personal assessment of their actions. I just hope some growing up goes on. Not perfection, but improvement.

I like Cogs, don't get me wrong, but there is no question the guy has had issues. He used to do things to self-destruct. Channelling that into bothering someone else is very possible.
If this is true, it is Incognito that needs to be sent packing, not Marting as some have suggested
